BREAKING STEVE MORISON: ' FRIDAY 2ND SEPTEMBER 2022 '

“ STEVE MORISON WILL UPDATE CARDIFF CITY FANS “

Friday 2nd September 2022

Morison’s Cardiff City are winless in their last four matches, but so are Millwall Morison’s old club, so should be very interesting.

STEVE MORISON:

Robinson available this weekend
Does a price tag come with pressure for Callum?

"It’s an interesting one because no one’s really mentioned it. It’s just a number we had to get to to get him in. It’s not actually a lot of money given the amount some players go for. I’d love to know what it’s like to get bought for £50m but that must be real pressure! But I’ve never had to worry about that."

Morison confirms he is fit for this weekend, saying: "Yeah. Unless someone tells me he’s not available. Everyone’s up for consideration. I’ve already made the decision. When we get off here [press conference], I’ll make my way down the training pitch and go through it all."

Steve Morison:

“I will repeat performances come first, not the results.”

"At the end of the day, I've said it many times, performance comes first and the result will follow. The performance was excellent. To a man we are fantastic. We just do not quite get the ones to fall for us, when they do, then you will see what we are really made off.”

Here we go. First up, how is the Bluebirds boss feeling after transfer deadline day?

"Of course [I'm happy]. We’ve been in a situation, I think a week ago, where we felt we’d exhausted all options from a free transfer point of view. The two loans we got close to both picked other teams.

"We were at the end and obviously a couple of things came up. Callum wasn’t available three days ago and then becomes available. The board, the owner especially, they jumped at the chance and supported it. It was a case of going down to the last minute and all we had to do was be ready and thankfully we were.

"Would I have wished we could have done it one week ago? Of course. But it’s just silly season. I don’t know why anyone leaves it until the last day.

"I’m pleased with where we are now. I think it’s nice for all managers in that we’ve got what we’ve got and we can concentrate on the rest of the season. It’s done and dusted now. We’ll watch to see if any players come through at clubs due to being registered late or whatever."

STEVE MORISON:

'It was better to have a budget to work to'

Does the transfers conducted show the confidence of the board in you?

"100 per cent. I put a plan in place when we took over. First we had to get safe and put a model in place, a plan in unity with what we saw and the board agreed. They backed it.

"We had a budget to stick to, which we’ve done. It looked a challenge initially, but once we started looking into it, it was better to have a budget to work to because we knew everyone was here for the right reasons.

"That’s brought a great unity. It’s a good place, a vision we had, to be able to put it together. I said I’d change the outlook of the squad, the dynamics of it and I couldn’t have done that without the support of people around me.

"Can we get better? Yes and I’m sure we will over time but we've got to start somewhere."

STEVE MORISON:

Transfer targets hit

Is 17 signings what you hoped for?

"We didn’t really have a number on it. We looked at the 15 mark when we first looked into it. But at that moment James Collins hadn't gone. We knew there would be changes within those numbers. We wouldn’t have done the other one had JC not been injured. If you look at it it’s still 15 really, we’ve just kind of replaced them.

"We hit what we wanted to do. Some of the signings are there for projects, the benefit of the football club in the future as well as some of the younger players that have come through and done well last year."

'I can sleep knowing there's no excuses now'

This is really your squad now - does that bring added pressure?

"It’s much better because I can go to sleep at night knowing there's no excuses now. That’s the best way to live your life. Control what you can control.

"Between now and November it will be really good to see where we can get this squad to. Yes, it’s more pressure because there’s nothing to hide behind.

"Are there still changes to be made over time? Yes. But ultimately, for me and my staff we’re sitting in a much happier palace. If it works it’s great. If it doesn't at least it was done in a way we wanted it to be."

Callum Robinson 'a great human being'

What will Callum Robinson bring?

"You’re a striker, so you’re judged on your goals. Ultimately, he brings Championship and international experience with him. Another great age at 27. He brings quality, can score goals and can set up goals. He brings know-how. You’ve got to know how it feels to put it in the back of the net.

"He’s a great human being and that’s something we’ve tried to bring in across the board."

STEVE MORISON:

Robinson had been on radar for some time

Has Robinson been on the radar for a while?

"He’s the type of player that’s been on the radar. But you can’t really have someone on your radar when they’re not available. So arguably no.

"But when you keep knocking on doors and you keep asking whether this player would possibly be available or would that player be available, eventually, he was available. You’ve got to remember, there’s agents ringing around everywhere all the time, offering players or asking the question over whether you’d be interested.

"But he was on a list of players we liked but until he became available he wasn’t really an option and when he did become available, we had to get everyone on board with it and I was really pleased they came on board with it."

Can he play across the front three and do you welcome that versatility?

"Definitely, but he’s just a good footballer. He’s got all the attributes, all the technical abilities, all the athleticism that we need and he’ll be a really good asset to us."

Morison: 'I want Millwall fans to hate me on Saturday'

Attention now turns to playing Millwall on Saturday.

"It will be a good one. We know it’ll be a tough test. We’ve got to go there and stand up and be counted.

"If we perform like we have been doing, then we’ll be alright. We’ve got to deal with the atmosphere, deal with the occasion. We just need to be brave and show that belief.

"[The fans] were great last time, to be fair. I remember them singing my name for large parts of the game, which was a nice feeling. But look, I want them to hate me tomorrow. That’s the reality of it, that's just how I am. I thrive off that and hopefully the team will as well."

No fresh Cardiff injury worries

You'll be looking to get back to winning ways, are there any injuries of note ahead of Millwall?

"Nothing new. We just want to get back. We’re doing alright, we’re playing alright and keep getting better.

"I think if we keep this consistency up then we’ll be alright. Then we’ve got Hull at home the week after. It would be good to see where we are going into the international break."

Inside Cardiff City's deadline day swoop for Callum Robinson as Steve Morison reveals ex-West Brom star could make his debut
Cardiff were made to wait to get the Republic of Ireland man over the line

By Tom ColemanSports

2 SEP 2022

Cardiff City boss Steve Morison says deadline day signing Callum Robinson is in contention for this weekend's trip to Millwall, after being made to wait until the last minute to bring the striker on board.

Robinson eventually sealed a permanent switch to the Welsh capital on deadline day, in a move believed to be worth around £1.5m, capping off a busy summer which saw Cardiff recruit a total of 17 players.

Having previously admitted to missing out on a couple of targets, Morison was understandably delighted to finally get the 27-year-old on board, having been made to wait until the final few days of the window.

STEVE MORISON:

"We’ve been in a situation, I think a week ago, where we felt we’d exhausted all options from a free transfer point of view," he said. "The two loans we got close to both picked other teams. We were at the end and obviously a couple of things came up.

"Callum wasn’t available three days ago and then becomes available.

I’m pleased with where we are now."

Robinson was one of several names to be assessed by the Bluebirds heading towards the conclusion of the summer window, and his arrival will hopefully go some way to remedying Cardiff's frustrations in the final third.

Morison himself has become visibly irked in recent times by constant questions over bringing a new striker into the building, and was always consistent in his message that he wouldn't be panicked into buying a forward he felt wasn't right for the club.

To have brought about a satisfactory answer to Cardiff's biggest question of the transfer window is, for now at least, another feather in Morison's cap, with the head coach overseeing one of the most extensive squad upheavals for many years.

Robinson, to many, feels like the missing piece of this squad. But with attention now turning to football, there is still an element of pressure for everyone to navigate, including Robinson himself, who is stepping into a club where so many expect him to be the main man.

Morison himself admits goals will be seen as the most important metric for Robinson's success. "You’re a striker, so you’re judged on your goals," he added. "Ultimately, he brings Championship and international experience with him. Another great age at 27.

"He brings quality, can score goals and can set up goals. He brings know-how. You’ve got to know how it feels to put it in the back of the net. He’s a great human being and that’s something we’ve tried to bring in across the board."

It's understood Robinson's squad number will be confirmed later on Friday, with the travelling Cardiff fans potentially set to catch their first glimpse of the new boy this weekend.

Asked if Robinson was fit for this weekend, Morison continued: "Yeah. Unless someone tells me he’s not available. Everyone’s up for consideration. I’ve already made the decision. When we get off here [press conference], I’ll make my way down the training pitch and go through it all."

Cardiff take on Millwall at The Den at 3pm on Saturday, September 3.

FAIR PLAY MORRISON: “NO EXCUSES”

Now that he got everything he has wanted and backed, he is actually saying No excuses now. So hopefully onwards and upwards and things go great you get the full praise, if you fail , Only Morison to blame.

Steve Morison says there are "no excuses" after a total overhaul of his Cardiff City squad.

Callum Robinson's £1.5m deadline day capture from West Bromwich Albion was Morison's 17th signing of the summer window.

The 39-year-old manager says he is now more than happy to take responsibility for his remoulded Championship outfit.

"It's much better because I can to sleep at night, shut my eyes and know there are no excuses," said Morison.

"That's the best way to live your life. Control what you can control. Don't worry about the uncontrollable."

Morison praised owner Vincent Tan for backing him "100 per cent" during the transfer window and says he is now really content with the make up of the squad as he looks to improve their Championship prospects, while continuing to develop a new playing style.

Having stepped up to his first manager's job last October, Morison said: "I put a plan in place when we took over.

"First we had to get safe. We had to get Championship football secured and put a model together, our vision of what we saw and the board agreed. They backed it.

"We had a budget to stick to, which we've done.

"It looked a challenge initially, but once we started looking into it, we found it was better to have a budget to work to because then we knew everyone was here for the right reasons, rather than being here for a pound note, for example.

"That's brought a great unity and created an environment where we know everyone can look at each other in the place and know there is no-one sitting next to you and being asked to do the same job as you but on an astronomical amount of money compared to what you are getting paid. So it's a good place."

"I said I'd change things, change the outlook of the squad, the dynamics of it and I couldn't have done that without the support of people around me.

"But I think we have gone a long way to achieving that.

"Can we do better? Yes. Can we get better? Yes - and I'm sure we will over time - but we've got to start somewhere."

Much of Cardiff's recruitment happened early in the window and after exhausting the free transfer options in his quest for a striker, Morison revealed Robinson's availability was a late call.

"Callum was not available three days ago, then he became available and the board, the owner [Vincent Tan] and Ken Choo [the chief executive] jumped at the chance and supported it.

"I said it would go down to the last minute and it did. All we had to do was be ready and thankfully we were."

Morison takes his Cardiff side to Millwall on Saturday, a club where he spent much of his career as a player and remains their third highest goalscorer of all time.

Cardiff are looking to halt a run of four games without a victory but Morison is looking forward to the time ahead of the World Cup break in November and beyond.

"Between now and November it will be really good to see where we can get this squad to. Yes, it's more pressure because there's nothing to hide behind now.”

"Is there still evolvement to the squad? Yes. Are there still changes to be made over time? Yes.

"But ultimately, for me and my staff we're sitting in a much happier place. We know if it works it's great. If it doesn't at least it was done in a way we wanted it to be".
