Cardiff fans are unlikely to see too much of Ollie Tanner in

Mon Aug 29, 2022 7:40 pm

Cardiff fans are unlikely to see too much of Ollie Tanner in the coming months, but manager Steve Morison is adamant the plan they have in place for him will stand him in good stead in the long term.

Tanner came from the Isthmian League with Lewes FC and has stepped up seven tiers to join the Championship outfit amid interest from a number of rival clubs.

He looked bright in pre-season, but was off the pace in the League Cup defeat by Portsmouth.

It's understandable, too, given he is only 20 and has never worked in a professional football environment. Morison understands the toll that might have taken on him and hopes to bed him in slowly over the next few months.

STEVE MORISON:

"It was a baptism of fire, the first couple of months, and he started to feel a few bits and bobs he wouldn't have felt before," Morison said of the winger.

"There is a plan in place for him. He will be in and around, he will train loads and pick up minutes with the under-21s between now and January, just to get him used to the rigours of full-time football.”

"We are just managing him and he will be better for it at the back end of the season”

Strange strategy ?

I do wonder if some of signings just haven't lived up to expectations

This one is very strange as the Media and the Club and Morison built up Tanner like a superstar and he is not a kid he is 20 years old.

I spoke at the time time a club manager at FC Lewis level who’s family have an apartment opposite me and he said massive, massive jump and was a bit shocked we expected Tanner to make Championship level , should of say gone to League 2 for a while

I’m not sure it’s a strange strategy. It’s certainly a gamble but I’m guessing it’s not an expensive one and therefore worth taking a risk.

We’ve said for years that the club seemed risk averse in terms of looking at non-league players so I’m not going to criticise them when they do sign someone.

Tanner certainly “interested” Spurs and seemed to provoke some excitement in our pre-season games. Morison was pretty clear right from the off that Tanner was a “project” so we need to be patient.

He may even end up out on loan in January but he’s got time on his side and could still turn out to be a bargain investment.

I'm pretty sure morrison said he was a project from day one. It was the media who played it off otherwise.
But I feel its just down to stepping up to pro football. He will be fine once he's settled into it.

Pretty low risk gamble for potentially a decent return. Spurs and Brighton put a bid in for him so he must have something about him to be attracting prem clubs. From what I've seen, he hasn't looked out of place in the u21s despite not having previous access to the coaches and facilities the others players have probably had the luxury of for several years.

Some players can't make the step up from L1 to championship or championship to prem, he's jumped 7 divisions. That's a huge change in standard and lifestyle. I wouldnt be surprised if he spends 6months in and around the first team training whilst playing for the u21s to get him up to speed - and then loaned out in january. Morison stated he was a longer term project. Hopefully he comes good.

How is this strange?

Low risk by the club cost 30,000. Would be a shock to anyones body training the amount pro footballers do to non league.

i would say this was strange, as if i rememebr correctly, he turned spurs down because he wanted first team football, and then signs for us, but turns out he won't feature in first team football. i get he will eb training with the first team, but surprised we have not loaned him out

Better chance of first team football with us than spurs once he’s fit. I’m sure he realised he’d have to get fitter.

It’s strange how the Media / Morison and the Club built the lad up like a world beater:

I was amazed when fans expected to be a star this season based on you tube clips The kid looks like he has something and more than most who have spent the last 10 years at our academy. I think that we are looking at potential with Tanner and we will not see much of him until at the least next season

I have to be honest and fell for the hype around this lad but I think what SM is doing is very sensible and shows abit of long term planning and belief in Tanner so look forward to seeing him post January

Can you quote where Morison built him up as a world beater?

Speaking about the winger on Thursday, Morison said: "Ollie Tanner is a project, he has time to grow." There is hope that he is an exciting project, but a project nonetheless.

If anything Morison has played him down
