Steve Morison: “ I won’t be pressured “

Fri Aug 26, 2022 7:09 am

Cardiff City boss Steve Morison insists he won't be pressured into placing more responsibility on the shoulders of Rubin Colwill this season, adding that hype around the Wales youngster is proving unhelpful to his development.

Mick McCarthy, Rob Page, and almost every follower of Cardiff City, have seemingly all earmarked Colwill as a potential superstar since his senior breakthrough, and his impressive recent cameo against Bristol City will only serve to intensify the clamour for him to be handed a stronger role in Morison's plans this term.

Rightly or wrongly, there's a growing perception Morison doesn't quite share everyone else's enthusiasm, although he's previously urged caution and patience in allowing the player to develop, pointing to the example of Manchester City's Phil Foden as the template to follow.

Foden was initially drip-fed into Pep Guardiola's plans before establishing himself as the superstar he is today for club and country, and the Cardiff boss clearly feels it's an example to follow, although some will likely disagree.

In terms of this season, and in Morison's defence, Colwill is still playing catch-up having previously sat out most of the summer due to injury. But his flashes of excitement, and his status as the potential local hero, often cause fans to dispense with such practical realties.

STEVE MORISON:

"He’s a hugely talented boy," Morison said ahead of Saturday's clash with Preston North End. "I smile when I go a bit on the defensive on him because I’m trying to protect him.

"Unfortunately, you guys [the media] put too much pressure on him. Whether you think he reads all the stuff he puts out, of course, he does. Or people around him will.

"He’s a hugely talented boy, but he’s no different to other players in the squad. Everyone’s treated the same. He has to tick boxes to come back [into the starting line-up].

"If I put him in 2 weeks ago when he’s just come back and he broke down that’s on me. He has to be managed correctly."

But there are factors clearly being weighed up behind the scenes that go beyond match fitness. Put simply, Morison clearly still feels Colwill isn't quite the rounded player he needs to be - at least not yet.

Either he is good enough or he's not. He's old enough and big enough to get out there and prove how good he is. What's wrong with Morison we need someone capable of scoring goals.or is he holding him back in case they have had interest in him from other clubs and they don't want him injured?

Is any one capable of understanding Morisons methods as I'm completely baffled. Desperate for a striker but more defenders being brought in. It seems we have a Manager who will take no advice knows it all and will do it his way forgetting this is his first job in this position as a Manager. Fans have said we will judge him after 10 games which now is not far away, Why problems getting a striker in to many excuses? Being to fussy well the club were not to fussy when giving him the job. Bring in an older experience striker to help the younger players before we forget what the goal posts are there for

I prefer to believe Morrisons assessment than a shouty racist who clearly has a very limited knowledge about football.

How does it make me racist? I'm 75 and followed the Bluebirds since 1959 seen a lot over the years. By the way Morison has one R not 2

Well he says in his interview that colwill was blowing and very tired after 60minutes at under21 level so I doubt he’s up to match fitness for this game to start, it should be another sub appearance as he gets up to fitness, eventually he should get the start though as long as he keeps deserving it

Undoubtedly a talent but I didnt think he did that well against Bristol and gave the ball away a lot in my opinion. Possibly his lack of game time is not allowing him to get into a flow or maybe his fitness isnt quite there yet. The defender is a replacement for JC no doubt. A striker...It is becoming a bit of a concern now, how long do we give Watters?

Just hope we dont get the played theyve never played in fornt of 27000 when the Derby games come around again. :bluebird:

Racist or not I think Morison who’s known Colwill since he was 17 years old, has coached and managed him and sees him on a daily basis would know more about how and when to play the lad some some miserable old bugger who clearly hasn’t got a clue about modern football.

He is 20 years of age fitness should not be a problem. How much longer is he going to protect him from real life. If he is as good as they say he will make it now when he is needed. Only one way to find out play him. As for you other comment I know enough about football thank you. I expect your another football failure who never made it

If you think he can come back from an injury and just hit the fitness levels required to play championship football, you clearly don't know enough about football. He was struggling in the u21s midweek.

I used to live in Grangetown many years ago, used to go to newsagents on Corporation Rd. Often saw Tosh in there. He was 21 when he signed for Liverpool good job no one held him back played for City at a young age. If Colwill has it than nows the time to show it

Some people just don’t get it mate.
No pre-season but just throw him in because he saw Toshack in a newsagents 52 years ago

Just forget it. Looks as if Colwill is injury prone. Anyway I'm wasting my time with you. Just one self opinionated clown who thinks he knows it all.

He’s not self opinionated, he is literally quoting Steve morison interview where he said colwill was blowing and struggling at 60mins against under 21’s.
If that makes him self opinionated saying colwill a not ready to start then I don’t know anymore :D

You've posted your opinion, others have posted theirs. Why are they clowns?

So far, playing Colwill would be detrimental to overall performance of the team, regardless if you think he is being held back or not. Hopefully well see more of him in the coming games. He has gone from u23s football to an international in just over 2 years. I think he is developing pretty well.

It's called sports science the process in which players are deemed fit enough to play? Its known that players have not started a game because the backroom staff say the player could pull muscle or similar if plays.... most people know if a player doesn't have a pre season it takes long time to catch up to rest squad same thing if out injured for awhile ... etete is case in point he is so unfit he cant last 20mins at moment without being knackered hence reason he is only sub later in game.

Football is all about views why people got insult is beyond me and we all think we know better than managers but none of us are managers.

I think Morrison can do what he likes he is the manager I actually disagree with him about Rubin he is better than what Morrison is playing however Morrison is the manager and if we are in trouble by Xmas it is him who will lose his job not us.

Posters moan about how they are entitled to an opinion yet take a difference in opinion as a personal insult.
