Steve Morison: 'I'm fed up of defending you!'

Sun Aug 21, 2022 2:07 pm

STEVE MORISON:

'I'm fed up of defending you!'

Steve Morison's stinging message to misfiring Cardiff City's strikers after Bristol City defeat

What did I say to them?

“ I told them today 'I'm fed up of defending you, you've got to put the ball in the back of the net. That's your job. You get your moments, you have to put the ball in the back of the net'," Morison said of his strikers.

"You have to keep plugging away. You have to keep believing and be confident. Just keep putting yourselves in the areas and take the chances. It's all about a mindset.

"I don't want to talk about myself because I had my mind and I can't tell you what they're thinking. I can only try and help them take those chances."

Morison has four strikers, one whom is unfit at the minute in Isaak Davies, all of whom are 24 or under and have fewer than 10 Championship goals between them all in their careers.

When asked if the strikers he does have at his disposal have what it takes to get the requisite goals this season, he replied:

“We don't know yet. They haven't done it. But it's what we've got. There's no one else there at the minute. There's no one else available that can come and do it either.”

Has to be said as we have now failed to score in 3 of our last 4 games and only scored one in the other. It's not the worst kept secret in football that despite a remarkable summer transfer window so far we haven't got a striker of Championship standards in the squad.

I make it 11 days to sort that issue Steve.

It seems they are apart from unable to score need deaf aids don't seem to hear what their Manager is saying. Better put you boots on Steve and show them how it's done

Watters ,harris and colwil should of definitely scored today, there lies our problems

Good. Now change it. He wasn't afraid to drop O'Dowda, Sawyers or Philogene after good games!!

Just wish Hugill deal was doable. He would score a decent number in this team, he was pretty good in a s&@t team last season !!

But last week Morison said he was happy with his strikers abd said he did not need anymore???

Only way to change it is either play with two upfront or get in new strikers it's that simple really .... neither watters or harris can play loan striker role ...... the problem is we only create couple of chances per game and if dont score with 1st one we are going struggle like today? Will say only the elite strikers score from 1st chance get in most games... really is easy solution to problem but solving it is not easiest thing to do? "FIND A STRIKER"

Wez,

Well he has been more than patient with the both of them. We can all see we desperately need to replace them.

Shock horror SM throws his players under the bus after yet another derby defeat

Re: Steve Morison: 'I'm fed up of defending you!'

Sun Aug 21, 2022 2:55 pm

I was willing to give Watters a chance but I think it’s time to admit defeat with that one. We won’t be going anywhere fast with our current crop of strikers.

Morrison said he not going to get a 32 plus (age) I!How old is Hugill? Sometimes the older ones have the experience?I have defended Watters for ages but losing faith in him. Thought Bryan won't come to us as he is ex Brizzle, but money talks. Herein the problem. Biggest thing for me today was passion, especially as it was a derby. KTF

Annis, he was clearly defending those at his disposal and keeping confidence high

The reality is that no matter how hard they try, neither Watters or Harris are the answer and Davies is the only prospect but even he is not the physucal striker we now need

We need to get forward players in quickly to complete the good work done to date and this season can end very well :ayatollah:

Today in the first half Sawyers worked some space on the edge of the Bristol box and as he was moving along the edge of the box he was looking to Watters, our lone striker, to offer himself for a pass to help Sawyers create an opportunity on the edge of the box centre goal. Watters was like a statue and offered absolutely nothing for Sawyers who looked really frustrated by him.

Yes strikers need to score but when you play the lone striker linking play and helping create space for others is essential BUT Watters just isn't up to that element of the game and it is costing us. Hughill would have showed for Sawyers as would one of the better free agents like Lewis Grabben.

I really believe SM has done his best to get the right player so for me the club need to support him in getting the player. If we have to wait to January we will likely, in my opinion, be in the lower half of the table. The right forward is the missing piece of the jigsaw SM has worked so hard to complete this summer.

Very well explained there.

It's not so much the what he IS doing... its the what he's NOT.

Stats don't show a fantastic cross or pull back and the fact the striker isn't there!

If watch his reactions, he's always pissed off with himself, like he knows he should be there! Also other players explaining to him. I get he's learning, but we need better!!

we are expecting players to take the one chance that comes along as we've seen all 3 so called strikers have missed at least one good chance to score in every game.... we have the players to break quickly on teams but we do not use it enough and more often or not final ball is poor or it's a poor choice of ball and that's been true in every game... yes morison as right to slam attackers but can any one say watters Harris are capable to
be lone strikers? So why does he persist in doing it... there is not a lot wrong but he needs to see an obvious problem
and change things to enhance our chances.... I believe he is defensive minded and not letting players have their head going forward example today most corners we had 4 players in box for them until 2 goals down.

I'm saying he needs to do better. He has one chance cos his decision making is poor. Improve that and he'd have had a load more chances and probably goals to match.

strange quote from SM, i am guessing that Max won't be here in 11 days as that won't do anything for his confidence.

He is a striker whereas Harris is a wide forward IMO but has just found the step up too much at this stage of his career, so i think its best if we parted ways.

Almost right, he throws young relatively inexperienced players under the bus. If he is going to single out players he should also point the finger at Kipre, who I thought was doubly at fault for the second goal, giving away a free kick by being too late to a ball that should have easily been his and then not picking up his man when the free kick came across. In fact he looked totally out of sorts in the second half. But then Kipre is 30 years of age and doesn't look like someone you want to upset!

Not sure if its his decision making but certainly his touch inside box as cost him badly on several occasions like today brilliant run for one on one but his 2nd touch meant didn't have the clear shot he wanted.. this as happened to often this season ... on side note aarland one on one just now he missed! :laughing6:

Look at Conway for Bristol- different class to our front line unfortunately. We need Coliwell in the team and a player with ability to run at players in the box and able to be calm in goal scoring situations.

Simpson was struggling second half (maybe match fitness) and I think that had an effect on Kipre. No excuse for losing his marker though.

FFS sign a goal scorer immediately. Anyone could see from the start of the season that we are useless in front of goal.
Watters and Harris are not goal scorers at this level.
Basically if we concede a goal we will not win. :banghead:

On Friday afternoon, in response to being asked if his team needed more a goal threat, Morison said: "If Steve Bruce was here, would you say that to him? I think it’s quite disrespectful to the players who are here. They are good players who have scored goals at their level. If I had Karlan Grant, would you ask me the same question?"

I thought that was one of the dumbest things he's said so far. Karlan Grant has scored 43 goals in 126 Championship and Premier League appearances. The contrast with Max Watters, Mark Harris and Kion Etete couldn't be much more stark.

He's singing a different tune now though.
