Breaking News: Cardiff City defender Jamilu Collins is set to miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury

Feiday 19th August 2022

STEVE MORISON:

Jamilu Collins update

We won’t see him again until next season. Gutting for the lad. Really gutting. We are all here for him. We are going to make the next year the best it can possibly be for him.

It’s the worst case scenario. We will try and get him back for pre-season next year. We will have one hell of a left back next season. It’s his ACL.

Steve Morison

Any other injury worries?

No. Kipre is back. Apart from the ones you know about, Ebou, Isaak and JC, everyone else is available.

Work on strikers?

It’s trying to give them that confidence. If you don’t score goals, you get knocked. They all know where the goal is, it hasn’t moved since they were eight years old. They know how to do it. It’s just a confidence thing and repetition. All aspects of the game. With strikers, you get one and a few follow.

STEVE MORISON:

Joel Bagan latest

Yeah. There is a big possibility that Joel might fill in at left-back… because he is a left-back!

JC has been outstanding. He has to be ready and step up in a huge game on Sunday.

I think it’s wrong for us to sit here and say we were going to rely on Joel for the whole season. JC was an unknown quantity in the Championship, but we knew it would be good to see them go toe to toe with each other.

We have had to wait, but on the plus side he played for the u21s on Tuesday. We know he is a good player and he is ready and raring to go.

STEVE MORISON:

How aware are you of the nature of this weekend's game?

Yeah. Contrary to belief, we do. It’s huge! We lost all four derbies last year, that can’t happen and it shouldn’t happen.

We started that preparation today. We have sold out ours and they have sold more than 20,000. It should be a great occasion.

STEVE MORISON:

How much did it affect you losing the derbies last season?

It affected me after the Swansea loss because of the backlash from it. There wasn’t a right thing to say after that game, because everything you said got torn apart. It was a disappointing part of a thing we had to do.

It’s not good losing a game, but that Bristol City loss was a turning point, we near enough got ourselves safe after that. It wasn’t a good day but it ended up being the catalyst for the positive results we needed.

The Swansea one, it affected you mentally. The backlash was awful and we have to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

STEVE MORISON:

Do you need more goals?

It’s difficult. If Steve Bruce was here, would you say that to him? I think it’s quite disrespectful to the players who are here. They are good players who have scored goals at their level. If I had Karlan Grant, would you ask me the same question?

If someone comes up that can make us better, I will jump at the chance. At the minute, there isn’t anybody.

No one comes up who fits the bill. The recruitment team are working incredibly hard. Whether that’s left-back, defence, midfield, up front.

Nothing jumps off the page and makes think we need to make it happen. We have had offers for people who have gone to other clubs, that happens.

We need to be patient. That happens.

If we create chances like at Birmingham, we will score goals. It’s about creating chances. It’s about creating chances.

Max has had two shots in four games. That’s not down to him, that’s down to everyone. It’s a team thing. The Birmingham game, we had 16 shots and we could hold everyone accountable.

Squad well stocked elsewhere?

We have got covers everywhere else. That’s when you look at our squad, when we select the squad you can see there are people in the starting XI you can move, like Callum for example. Perry playing centre-half, he can shift to the right, that’s why Vontae doesn’t go on the bench.

It’s where we are. But that might change again come January.

McGuinness signs for Owls

So, Mark McGuinness has penned a season-long loan move to Sheffield Wednesday.

The centre-back, 21, had fallen down the pecking order at Cardiff and, to all intents and purposes, this looks like an excellent loan move for him.

A massive club who play at a very good standard in League One, potentially pushing for promotion, the Republic of Ireland youth international has an opportunity to really impress and force his way into Steve Morison's thinking next season onwards.

He is eligible to face Bolton Wanderers this weekend, should Darren Moore select him, and will wear the No.34 at Hillsborough.

Cardiff City boss Steve Morison delivers devastating Jamilu Collins injury update

The left-back had to be helped from the pitch on Wednesday evening at The Hawthorns after injuring his knee inside the first few minutes
Cardiff City defender Jamilu Collins is out for the season in a devastating blow to the Bluebirds.

The sight of Collins hobbling off the pitch on Wednesday night was difficult for Bluebirds fans to stomach. The Nigeria international attempted to dismiss Darnell Furlong inside the first three minutes and, in doing so, saw his studs get caught in the turf and his knee twist in an ugly, jerking fashion.

And Steve Morison has confirmed the club's worst fears, that Collins has ruptured his ACL and will require surgery - an injury which will keep the first-choice left-back out for the rest of the campaign.

"We won’t see him again until next season," Morison said of the Nigeria international. "It's gutting for the lad. Really gutting. We are all here for him. We are going to make the next year the best it can possibly be for him.

"It’s the worst-case scenario. We will try and get him back for pre-season next year. One thing we do know is we will have one hell of a left-back next season."

He added: "On a plus-point for him, his family has just moved over and he has his family with him now. The lads will get behind him, he will be around. I’m sure you’ll see his smiling face around the place. We have something else to fight for now.

"He is a great kid, he comes in with a smile on his face every day. He loved working every day with us and we loved working with him. He is someone you want around. He is infectious. As soon as he has his operation and he’s a bit more mobile he will be around the lads."

The manager on Wednesday branded Collins the best left-back in the league and, on his performances so far, there is certainly merit in that. Now, though, Cardiff will have to rely on Collins' deputy, Joel Bagan, for the Severnside derby clash with Bristol City on Sunday afternoon.

"There is a big possibility that Joel might fill in at left-back!" Morison said. "JC [Collins] has been outstanding. He has to be ready and step up in a huge game on Sunday.

"I think it’s wrong for us to sit here and say we were going to rely on Joel for the whole season. JC was an unknown quantity in the Championship, but we knew it would be good to see them go toe to toe with each other.

"We have had to wait, but on the plus side he played for the u21s on Tuesday. We know he is a good player and he is ready and raring to go."

Jack Simpson given you something to ponder?

He was excellent and it’s nice to have a decision to make.

Morison on Sheyi Ojo and Jamilu Collins: "Him and JC are really close. He gave JC somewhere to live when he was first over here. He has been massive for him until his family came over. If you strip back the exterior, there is a really good kid there and he has a heart of gold."

Asked Steve Morison about whether the injury to Collins meant a left-back was on the transfer agenda now.

Said it's obviously fresh, but added: "We will have to open that little notebook now to see who is out there.

Cardiff City star Sheyi Ojo is relishing life back with the Bluebirds and is determined to make the Welsh capital his home second time around.

The 25-year-old rejoined the club this summer on a two-year contract for his second spell with the Bluebirds, after spending the 2020/21 campaign on loan at Cardiff City Stadium.

A product of the Liverpool Academy, Ojo found it hard to settle and when asked about planting roots down at Cardiff, he said: “It’s a unique journey, I’ve been on loan to a few clubs. It’s been difficult to settle, it’s definitely a massive opportunity this season to feel like this place is my home.”

The winger, who will be at Cardiff City Stadium until the summer of 2024, has developed a close relationship with recently-signed defender Jamilu Collins, who has been living with Ojo until his family arrived here in the Welsh capital.

Manager Steve Morison revealed the devastating news on Friday that Collins, 28, will be out for the remainder of the season with an ACL injury. The Bluebirds boss also spoke of how close Ojo and Collins had become since the latter arrived from SC Paderborn.

“Since he’s come, obviously it’s difficult for him coming from a new country, I know what it’s like being on loan, I wanted to help him settle in as much a possible,” Ojo added.

“He was doing really well, I think he got man of the match first game of the season, he was doing really well on and off the pitch. He was getting closer to the team, so it’s really upsetting for him but obviously we’ve got to be there to support him now through his rehab.

“I’m going to personally do whatever I can to help him and his family. I’m sure he’ll come back stronger.”
