WHAT POSITION DO YOU . . . . .

Thu Sep 23, 2010 8:34 pm

No not what you lot are thinking, you dirty minded pervs

Come January Dave Jones will add to the squad I am sure, we know that he was looking at bringing in a Centre Half in the summer, he had agreed a deal with Glenn Loovens agent but the player decided to stay at Celtic and fight for his place. It was widely reported in the press that Celtic were prepared to deal with City but we knew weeks before as we are lucky enough to have contacts close to the dealings at City.

We know that had Glenn come in then along with Gerrard, Gypese would have moved on but DJ didn't get Loovens so Gypese was given the chance and fair play to him he has taken the opportunity and looked pretty solid throughout.

City did manage to bring in a centre half but obviously was not the first choice and it is unclear and anyone's guess how many games he will play in, hopefully he will remain injury free but going on past seasons you will have more chance of a McPhail hat trick this Saturday.

Another position DJ tried to strengthen was a back up to Bothroyd, he looked at many players including Steve Howard at Leicester but due to the embargo we were under prevented a deal being done and City missed out on the target, was this a bad thing or not ? I think that Howard would have been a good back up to Jay and fits the bill of the type of player DJ tends to go for.

Andy Keogh has been touted as a possible replacement for Jay but I have yet to see evidence of this, he is great worker but does not have the first touch that would make him succeed in the role that Jay occupies.

So if we could strengthen one area this January what position would you like that to be and realistically who would you like to see coming in ?

Brilliant first line Carl
But you've basically summed it all up there.
Another CB, Olofinjana replacement and Bothroyd replacement would do just fine.

Howard proved he couls still do a job last week. Would have been a great signing.

keogh is an improvement n the cover we've had for Jay before, but still hasn't got Jay's weapons (size, strength, pace, skill), we still need a big man and have for years. Even an older player who'll only come on for 10 mins or cover for Jay and give him chance to recover.

Its the last 10 mins which are key. We haven't got the option to go route 1 when we are chasing. Last 2 games the midfield were 2nd best, but we didnt have the choice to by-pass them, so we had no hoe of coming back. With someone like Howard/Parkin/Adebola/Priskin/Hulse/Blackstock you can do it but not with a Keogh.

It has cost us points every season, and will again this year.

Yes, we also need a 4th centre half, the 2 we have aren't bad, but centre halfs are the most likely to get suspended or injured in my book (all 3 did last year). I've no idea what to expect from Riggott and Blake is only temporary cover as those plaers mentioned above would eat him for breakfast (and Howard did) despite his obvious courage. I can also see him playing a fair bit at RB as Kev's fitness worries me and Matthews may well move on to bigger and better things or move forward where he looks more comfortable.

I'd still like to see another quality central midfielder and move Rae and Taiwo out, with Wildig, who has looked pretty sharp in the short stints he's had moving out on loan. Central midfield is the key for us, and we now find ourselves reliant on Oli and Drinkwater, with no-one else able to do the job to anywhere near the standard. This one is maybe a bit hopeful !

Tim I agree with every point you made and the certainly about the target man in the last 10 mins, this needs to be addressed.

Interesting point you made about Matthews maybe he should move further up into a midfield role.

cover for Jay,Oly and a centre back.
its been painfully obvious in the last 2 matches we don't have back up.
Although the squad is stronger than last season, when we have to use the back up its non existant.

Cheers Carl.

Reading through the posts it seems almost everyone sees it the same.

As for Matthews he is such a natural on the ball. He glides rather than runs, but defensively he is a bit weak and almost TOO GOOD to play there. The simple clearance into touch never enters his mind as he knows he's good enough to beat his opponent, but we all know thats not the way to play when you are under pressure. He's not UGLY enough for a defender in this division. Ironically with better ball players around him, who would also think in a similar manner he may be able to play full back in the premier league if he develops, BUT if you compare him to Bale, similar in poise, skill and balance and not far off in pace, but physically Bale is FAR stronger. I think this is why Jones holds him back so much as he wants to see him develop physically first.

As a winger the strength isnt so important, we've seen what he can do (that run in the league game against Leicester when he hit the post, and also a couple of weeks ago.) it would be interesting to see what he could do with a few games there. Obviously he might have to wait for Burke to get injured, but i'd put good money on that happening at some point this season.

Yes Lord Carl. Like you, I don't buy the argument that forwards like Jay are impossible to find. Forwards as good as him are difficult to find but then we don't need one as good, just a decent backup. So the main question is can we find a player similar enough that it won't compromise the effectiveness of our formation? Preferably one who has more ability than Johnson.

Of course, the anser's yes. We just need to be a bit more inventive with our scouting and take advantage of the relative strength of them pound. Connor Casey from Colorado, for example, would probably be available for less than half a mill. He'd be decent, maybe even excel, at this level. He signed a new contract last year but it was only for 350k a year. In dollars

Another could be the Senegal striker Fall who is available cheaply from Locamotiv Moscow.

Options closer to home could include that big lug Lee Miller from Boro then there's Charlie Austin who Jones has sniffed at before.

Another option: Leon Best fm Newcastle. Not sure how much of a fee they'd want. After all, they've got to keep Mike Ashley in beers

Carl what about Ebanks - Blake at Wolves

He can't seem to get a start there, and VERY powerful up front

Roberts Blackburn would be useful aswell. Keogh is more a support
striker a la chops

We having been chasing Leon Best for quite a while..

Re: WHAT POSITION DO YOU . . . . .

in your opinion carl do you think that there will be money made available for players in january?
i think that if there was we got good chance of automatic promotion otherwise
its the lottery of the playoffs again. i think we are all aware that 1st eleven best
in league but after that it falls a bit short imo.

He would be an EXCELLENT signing.

Looked a real handful for Coventry at CCS early last season even though his side were completely outplayed.
