With both sides set to make changes, key players will be hard to predict.

But former Cardiff City player Marlon Pack could feature for the visitors.

Rather get players match fit than win

Morison ready to shake up team

Cardiff City boss Steve Morison is likely to field an entire new-look team for Tuesday night's Carabao Cup clash with Portsmouth.

The Bluebirds will be looking to bounce back from a desperately disappointing showing at Reading with Cardiff City Stadium clashes this week first with Pompey, then Birmingham in the league.

Having fought with tenacity and resolve during the opening day win over Norwich, Morison's men were strangely lacklustre and seeming to lack in energy during the 2-1 defeat at Reading. Morison apologised to more than 2,00 Cardiff fans who travelled to Berkshire full of hope to roar on their team and warned results like Saturday's will happen if 'we're not at it.'

"We just didn't turn up. It's disappointing because of how well we did last week and how poor we were today," Morison said of the match. "It's just the league. You drop your levels and you lose games of football."

Despite having next to no money to spend in the transfer window, and getting rid of a glut of unwanted senior players, Morison's shrewd dealing means he still has the luxury of being able to put out a strong-looking shadow side in the cup. Many of the players he names will be looking to really put their hand up for selection in the more important Championship clash with Birmingham four days on.

Morison could field a new look back four of Vontae Campbell, Mark McGuinness, Oliver Denham and Joel Bagan, with new goalkeeper Jak Alnwich replacing first choice No.1 Ryan Allsop.

Club skipper Joe Ralls, yet to start a game this season, could come into the midfield, with youngsters Tom Sang and Eli King also figuring next to him.

Further forward there could be really exciting changes with new striker Kion Etete making his first start. The same could happen with Aston Villa lonee Jaden Philogene and also tricky wide man Ollie Tanner.

Philogene came on during the defeat to Reading, but Cardiff were so far off the pace they barely got the ball to his feet. Tanner impressed in pre-season. The two wide men clearly have talent and could help give the Bluebirds extra creativity further forward that has been missing thus far.

Mark Harris and Gavin Whyte are further options, while Morison continues to monitor the fitness of hugely gifted Cardiff Academy aces Rubin Colwill and Isaak Davies. He doesn't want to rush those two injured youngsters back, however, knowing how crucial they were to Bluebirds fortunes last season and also will be this campaign.

Pre-Pompey facts:

This is the first meeting between Cardiff and Portsmouth in any competition since August 2017, with the Bluebirds winning a first round League Cup tie 2-1.

Portsmouth have alternated between being eliminated (3) and progressing (2) from their five League Cup ties against Cardiff, getting knocked out the last time they faced them in August 2017.

Cardiff have lost five of their last six League Cup matches, with the exception being a 3-2 win against Sutton United at this stage last season.

Portsmouth have been eliminated at this stage of the League Cup in four of the last six seasons, losing 2-1 at Championship side Millwall last season.

This makes more sense to me as well. I definitely wouldn’t play Watters. Maybe have Harris on the bench.

Would be nice to see Colwill and Davies have a run but there’s no way they’ll play 90 minutes straight back from a longish injuries I would think.

We need to pick a strong team and go for the win in my opinion.

I agree. We have the luxury (certainly on paper) to play a strong side with a few good subs without hindering first team chances on Saturday.
I’d probably start Etete and bring Harris on after 50-60 mins, particularly if Etete is going to play Saturday.

Looking forward to this tonight. Think we've sold around 1,200 tickets.
Think our manager has said it'll be a changed team for us, squad players will be given a runout for fitness.
Good luck lads

Steve Morison: "Pompey will be a good game, we will give lots of players who need a game, a game. It'll give them the opportunity to be in the starting XI the Saturday after.

"It will be a different team, so they will need to perform to give me something to think about.

"You want to do as well as you can in competitions. It's a great game against a big club, I'm sure they'll travel in their numbers, the fans, and hopefully we can put on a good performance.

I like our team tonight ! Complete change ….. and arguably we are just as strong . The real question is :”is our strength good enough to do well in the Championship” ? 13 games

The ball falls kindly to Ollie Tanner and he hits the first shot of the game. But it dribbles into te keeper's hands.

Cardiff break quickly through Ralls in the middle of the pitch. Harris holds it up well and shifts it back to the skipper. He drills a low shot and it's narrowly past the post! Nice strike from 20 yards out, but just wide.

Jaden Philogene shows some tricky feet and stabs in a cross. Harris cannot get to it, though, and Griffths gathers.

Philogene lifts in a lovely cross and Denham flicks a header on. Mark Harris looks to latch on to it at the back post but is felled by a Pompey defender. Nothing given, though.

Lovely work from Philogene down the left. Whyte picks it up and lays Ralls off, but his first-time effort is deflected for a corner

Sustained pressure from Cardiff now. Ralls sees yet another shot from distance blocked.

Major danger there.

Scarlett beats Denham and sends in a dangerous cross. Cardiff just manage to get it away.

They break down the other end, quickly, through that dangerman Philogene. He lays off Whyte, who looks to have beaten the keeper, but a tremendous last-ditch block from Raggett keeps it out! So close!

Close again from Cardiff! A run from Mark Harris precedes a lay-off into the path of King, who smashes it first time, but it narrowly whistles over the bar.
