I saw Toshack make his debut as a sub against Orient. He was only sixteen and scored. I was only about 8 and my grandfather turned to me and said he will be worth £40,000 in years to come. Think he went for £110,000 which was a huge fee then. He was my hero at the time and I was gutted when he left.

Yep it was £100,000.

There was a lot of disgruntlement from the older fans then. I did not quite understand it all at the age of 10. The board took a right slagging off where they were accused of no ambition. We just missed out of promotion that season to the old First division and it turned out to be the start of our demise.

I can remember Cardiff signing Alan Warboys for £42,000 to replace Toshack but it took quite a few weeks to get it done and by that time they lost their momentum in the promotion race

Spot on. I have always said that Warboys was a very good replacement for Toshack that season. He scored a hatful including two on his debut as well as 4 in the first half against Carlisle. But as you rightly point out it took us a while to replace Tosh and in that time we went lost a few games we should have won. We had a very young Derek Showers up front.
