I thought he wanted to move closer to home?

Wed Jul 27, 2022 8:45 am

Glen Williams put out that Smitthies wanted to leave to move closer to home lol

I said at the time that was not what I heard, his wages were to high for City so they let him go, he was more than happy to stay at Cardiff.
He def wanted to stay in South Wales but it was put out the opposite by the local media once again.

Quality keeper.

Alex Smithies set to train with Premier League club Bournemouth following his departure at #CardiffCity as a free agent. Jonas Lossl has been training with #AFCB squad but uncertainty over whether he stays for the Premier League

This has to stop.

Your missing the point, that’s the truth, but it was put out he wanted to leave and it was virtually out of City’s hands , of course it was the wages and he’s a class keeper, but don’t make out he’s going because he wants to move closer to home.

He loved it here. Heard him say it a few times in interviews

Out of contract club gave him choice he chose not to accept what club offered? Rolls in same situation he accepted clubs offer he stayed... that was the situation regardless of as been put out by whoever.... or could it simply be morison wanted a different type of keeper? Alsop as far better distribution of ball than smithies! Think fact no club as come in for him says a lot.

To me there are only two points that matter,Does Steve Morison want him and would he accept £12k a week.

Looks like no to both questions...... if didn't want to leave why not accept reduced wages like rolls? Or simply morison wanted different type keeper like alsop? Not in million years could smithies expect same wages/conditions in new contract.

Steve Morison did want him, but Morison’s low budget said no.

He was on close to (allegedly) £30k a week . We now have 2 keepers that are on a lot less than £10k for the both . Also they will play Morisons way . So its a no brainer TBH .

Premier League Club Bournemouth have confirmed they have invited him to train with them, an offer which he has taken up.

I agree his wages were way to high for the Championship and who ever sanctioned these type of wages need sacking.

This is an interesting one isn't it ?

No doubt wages were the main factor as we simply can't, nor should, be paying £30k a week for anyone (possible exceptions Bale and Rambo   ).

But even then I honestly can't picture Smithies in this new style of football. He was a great keeper for us and made some unbelievable saves at times, but his weakness (and Phillips) was his distribution. Quite frankly he couldn't hit a barn door !!

We can see from pre-season that Allsop and Alnwick have become key players in building from the back and Smithies simply doesn't have that in hos locker. So even if Morison did want to keep Smithies I'm not sure he would have been first choice as the season progressed.

I think this is one of those moves that was good for the player and club. At this stage I'm not sure we could say that the goalkeeping position is any weaker for this season.

For me we could not afford him and I totally accept that.

Who was the last keeper we had that had good distribution?

Re: I thought he wanted to move closer to home?

High wages, poor save ratio stats, not a great understanding between defence and keeper, way too many goals conceded, poor distribution, I wonder why we let him go?

I think he's just training with them to keep his eye in, would be surprised if he stayed there.

If he does it will be as a much lower paid back up, I would have thought.
