Four trialists play for u21s

Four trialists started Cardiff City u21s' game in their demolition job of Bromley u23s on Wednesday afternoon.

The Bluebirds are looking to boost their youth ranks following a number of exits in the summer and will run the rule over a number of young players in the coming weeks.

Darren Purse's team to take on Bromley had four trialists included, as well as Siya Ligendza, the young striker whose contract ran out in the summer but is still training with the Bluebirds.

They ran out comfortable winners in the end, with two of the trialists actually getting on the scoresheet alongside Caleb Hughes, Tom Davies, Morgan Wigley, Siya Ligendza and a brace apiece for Joel Colwill and James Crole in the 10-1 triumph.

Cardiff City u21s XI : Luthra; McNamara, Trialist, Benjamin, Davies; Trialist, Trialist, Trialist; Jefferies, Ligendza, Hughes.

Subs : Semenyo, Turner, Jones, Clay, Ashford, Keeping, Kenniford, Wigley, J. Colwill, Crole.

Just out of curiosity why are these 'trialists' never named in match reports? Is it to stave off scouts from other clubs etc or some antiquated law about naming players with no contract?

I think the answer to this can be any number of reasons but the most common are:

a) The club does not want to alert scouts from other clubs
b) The player does not want to make public that he might not meet the criteria for a stronger club
c) Also if the player is not signed, in this case by CCFC, he would not want to alert other clubs that he failed a trial with us.

I think in this situation anonymity is best for all concerned.
