Centre back pairings next season

Tue Jul 19, 2022 12:31 pm

Who would be your preferred CB pairing next season?

If we are trying to go with the style from playing it out from the back i don't think nelson and McGuiness together work.

McGuiness dropped off massively last season and was at fault a lot of goals. Do you think Nelson is good enough consistently?

My preferred pairing would either be Kipre/NG or Kipre/Denham.

It would be a risk going with Denham from the start but i have always been impressed with him.

I agree with your pairings mate though my worries with both are that NG gets caught out in the air at the back post and OD lacks experience.

Ng and Kipre seem to have an understanding.

Looks like McGuiness may have fallen out of favour, and Ive never rated Nelson.

If we were seeing a real change at the club, we'd also get another CB, and Nelson would be sold, leaving Ng, Kipre, Denham ( who did OK yesterday), New CB and McGuiness.

Nelson can control a ball further than I can kick it, and his continuous selection causes me a number of concerns.

He’s good but gets caught out at back post in the air.

Let's be honest it has to be Kipre and someone else.

My choice would be Denham but his experience is a worry.

Ng can be brilliant but he has a mistake in him.

Fair play with your last sentence :laughing6:

I’d say his second touch is usually a tackle!

I don’t think anyone can say who the main 2 centre backs are going to be especially if we play 3 Lol
I doubt Morison knows yet either.

Im a little surprised we are playing 442 ( or was it 4411 or 451) as Morison championed 3cbs last year and wing backs.

Got to be Kipre and NG for me.

I know we will be more vulnerable to conceding from crosses and set pieces with NG as centre back, but with our current options, I think we would be better off with NG at centre back for our new playing style.

Kipre and NG have shown they are more comfortable playing out from the back, meaning less hoof ball and giving away possession. I also feel with more pacey, mobile centre backs, our back line can push up a little higher to enable us to play our more aggressive, high energy pressing style. This will give the opposition less opportunity to get into our final third to put crosses into our box.

Ideally, I would like to see us offload a centre back so we can bring at least one more in to strengthen, but if we have to stick with what we've got, it would be Kipre and NG for me.

I disagree with NG being comfortable in possession. Admittedly I Havnt seen every game he has played but the games I have, I’ve noticed if he’s pressured, he loses his composure and loses possession making us vulnerable. I just sense a mistake in him every time I’ve watched him play. May be down to the fact he was new to the CB role and maybe the coaches have worked on him for this season. Time will tell.

I don't totally disagree, but NG is closed down far quicker in his usual full back position than he would be at centre back and although not perfect in possession, I think he's far more comfortable than McGuinness and Nelson.

It will be interesting if Denham can break through this season though. I thought Denham looked very comfortable at Liverpool, but in a later Championship game, an opponent ran past Denham as if he wasn't there, so I'm still undecided and worry he lacks pace and mobility.

I think Morison will go with Nelson and Kipre.

Personally I'm not sure either McGuiness or Denham are good enough if we want to be aiming for top half.

Ye that’s a fair assessment. Denham still got a lot to learn. He will only learn by playing games though. Maybe if he’s partnered with Kipre he could be a lot better. Be interesting to see how it all plays out.

I saw NG dally a bit in possession last season but after watching so far this season I now realise it was because he couldn't find anyone to pass it to. I'm hoping he does better this season as in other departments he looks assured.

That could be a very good point  hopefully with our midfield we have now they will give him options. I Havnt seen any of the pre season games so hopefully he will have improved with better players around him
