Rovers completed the signing of the talented centre-back on Friday with Connolly signing a three-year contract after the Bluebirds activated a 12-month option in his previous agreement in order to extract a fee from the Gas.


After an outstanding loan spell, bringing Connolly back was a no-brainer for manager Joey Barton, with the 20-year-old not part of Steve Morrison’s plans at the Cardiff City Stadium. However, the Gas have still had to go through several weeks of negotiations to get him back to north Bristol with the Bluebirds fully aware of his importance to Rovers as they prepare for the League One campaign.

As soon as I seen we were getting rid of him I was thinking it was a mistake! He done so well for them and for Barton to come out and see he’s the best player to play for them I bet they couldn’t believe their luck how cheap they were getting him. Did we just sell because we are that desperate for a potential 150k? Disappointed with this.

Be interesting to see how he progresses. I would have thought we would have loaned him out for another year to see how he coped with League One.

Got a feeling we might regret this. For the sake of 150k I would have triggered the contract extension and loaned him back to rovers.

Hopefully we have a sell on clause in the contract.

Personally I would have liked to see him go for free, but with a decent size sell on Clause if he was to go, which by the sound of it is what he wanted.

We did trigger the extension clause for a year, hence how we were able to get a fee for him
