1968/69 Cup competitions

Postby Pantmawr Bluebird » Sat Jul 02, 2022 5:18 pm

Looking through old programmes this evening and saw that we were in 5 cup competitions in the 1968/69 season! (6 if you include the FA Youth Cup)

Can you imagine the fixture congestion and the complaints from the "Big 4" Premier League teams if this was today

And we only had a first team squad of around 17, one substitute only allowed and would put our strongest 11 out even in Welsh Cup games.

The players didn't wear gloves then either, even goalies rarely wore them.

The combination cup was for reserve sides and the youth Cup speaks for itself, so only 3 cup competitions really.

Four cup competitions. FA Cup, League Cup, European Cup Winners Cup and the Welsh Cup.

If you look at the scorers in the early rounds of the Welsh Cup against Aberystwyth and Bethesda you will note that City put their first team out- (if you are old enough to remember that far back!)

Toshack, Clarke, Jones, Lea, Bell, King. No fringe players there.

I'll always remember that Arsenal game in the third round of the FA cup, massive crowd at Ninian park that day, and we gave them a good game, 0-0.

I was only a kid at the time and went to the toilet with about 15 minutes before kick off. It was so packed I couldn't get back on to the Grange End. Watched much of the game peering through the fence by Radio Ninian but could only see about half of the pitch. I believe the crowd was over 55,000.

We did give them a good game but if memory serves me right, we never looked like scoring. My overriding memory was that Ian Ure had Tosh in his pocket, something no other centre half in Div 2 was capable of doing at that time. Oh and being in a crowd of 56,000 people and unable to move an inch for almost 2 hours.

Ian Ure didnt take any prisoners. But then Tosh was only 18 or 19 at the time and was still not fully mature.

If memory serves, Bobby Gould, former Wales and City manager, played for Arsenal that day.

Yes, Ure was a big blond haired imposing centre half and Tosh was just a lad. Ure joined man utd the following season, don't think he stayed there long though.
