Millwall home 1999 your stories

Tue Sep 21, 2010 6:23 pm

Looking back at Millwall that day it was the opening day of the season as i remember and the weather was blazing hot. Everyone seemed to know Millwall were coming but I think in hindsight nobody expected the madness that followed. I arrived early morning and got to the POW, I soon realised that Millwall had come on the friday night and had a few hundred strong outside sams bar with old bill now there and the two sets of fans were surrounded by each pub. I then headed up to canton in a taxi thinking this will be a day to remember. Later that morning splinter groups of millwall attacked city fans in st mary street and the arcades and I seem to remember they attacked the hotel opposite milllane, which caused national headlines as some chart band were staying there. The beers went down, and then not long after kick off around 200 millwall arrived late and went straight over the bob bank trying to get through the police and safety netting no messing around on their part. After the game there were lots of missiles and bricks going into the grange end from the main road but nothing could have forseen millwall next course of action. !! A roar went up and they had broken out from the lower grandstand canton end as came on the pitch and charged the length of the ground and surged at the city lads thronging outside . The rest is a blur to be honest, police horses charging around , chaos really later I gather that millwallwere forced by the city back into the ground !!!!! that what i remember to this day havent seen anything like it !!! there must be more stories whats yours ? :ayatollah:

i was on newport station at 10.40 when 50 millwall tried to get off in newport 30 good lads and twenty youngsters who were crapping themselves.
police made them stay on the train and the thirty good lads were escorted to sams bar whilst the 20 youngsters got on the first train back to london.
the next train arrived with 200 millwall some lads but mostly wannabee's
.
huge mob of cardiff attack millwall at sams bar and pepper spray used against cardiff fans by police.
millwall attacked again as escorted to ninian park.
after the game some millwall come through lower grandstand and as they come out onto sloper road their main lads got battered as some of the other fans shut the gate behind them to stop cardiff getting in.
spoke to tony warner a few years later as he was in goal for millwall that day and he said millwall fans in their changing rooms hiding in showers.
Totally different view of the day to you cefn as millwall did nothing and got turned over big time as they admitted later.
in all my years never seen millwall really come to cardiff and do anything major along the lines of chelsea in the eighties.
personally i hope saturday is a non event as we dont want the new breed of fan put off coming to watch the city as they are the future and any sort of violence will put them off along with the new families who now turn up regular.

That day was a picnic compared to Leeds home 1972 in the fa cup and spurs home 1977 also in the fa cup and man utd home in 1974. Now those were REAL violence.

I was only 12 at the time and was shitting it seeing Millwall fans chucking bricks at us.

I remember that day as well because my Dad bought me the centenary kit sponsored by Modplan. I remember changing into the whole kit in the bogs in the Grandstand. The little things you remember...lol

I had my Sheepskin slashed at the Spurs game, we left the game early and to our shock The Yids were just outside the gates. Nasty day that one was.

Yep fair does to spurs, they took it to us that day, toe to toe proper fighting that seemed to go on for ages, anyone who was there that day will never forget it, we got the better of them in the end though.

I remember that day well, I had just turned 14 and nagged and nagged my old man to take me to the first game of the season as my mate was away. We went down the Neville I think, sat in the Lower grandstand grange end and remember millwall walking straight through the police ribbon thing towards the bob bank, don't remember much of the game.

After the game I remember being outside and my old man saying if we get split up meet on hadfield road and we stood there in the middle of sloped road watching it all kick off, we did end up splitting up I ended up cacking myself and legging it and my old man turned up 45 mins later with a black eye and bruised knuckles. Funnily enough he's coming down with me on Saturday but he's too old to get involved now told him to be on his best behaviour. :ayatollah:

I didnt know til the other week but a Millwall feller got stabbed up somewhere
round the arcades where they sloped off looking for it. He's a proper 'Wall lad
by all accounts too. He fucked off to hospital and for obvious reasons said it
was nowt to do with football!!

'Wall got bashed up that day and to be fair they hold their hands up. But
Cardiff have gone there looking for it to, and they wont deny that either.

Yep Tony Warner in goal that day, innocently threw bottle back into city fans, my mate went down like a sack of shit holding his eye. Funny as f**k as he proceeds to poke himself in the eye to back up his story

He appeared in Daily Mirror following week with make up on his eye for photo, things media will do to sell stories hey.

He settled out of court for few quid if I remember rightly. Hell of a boy fair play :D

Aye 1999, opening day of season, 3pm k.o., party in the park weekend too. The league's fixture computer fucked up tha day :ayatollah: :ayatollah: Oh and Wall will admit they got slammed under the grandstand, proper lads there dishing it out :old:

My only memory was millwall running through the family enclosure at the end of the game then legging back in there again after the city surged towards them....then a chap coming back around 10 minutes later for his trainer which had come off after he kicked a millwall fan
