POLL QUESTION: STEVE MORISON CHANCE OR NO CHANCE?

Thu May 05, 2022 10:07 am

I have read with interest some of the negativity surrounding Steve Morison and his credentials/ability to become a more than decent manager at Cardiff City FC

Based on his on and off field performances to date, particularly his January transfer business and getting us well clear of the drop zone, I am one who is more than happy to give him an opportunity and backing for next season

For me, not so good results in the last few games have largely been down to a few understandable reasons...

A feeling of safety - relegation stopped being an issue two months ago

Lack of potent strike force - we actually do okay until we get into the final third but are then profligate in the few chances we create

A young, developing squad, who are learning 'on the job' - everyone has to start somewhere and a few of our youngsters are showing the required 'promise' to persevere with them

A lack of effort/support - from some well paid (so called) 'professionals' left over from past management, who simply didn't live up to their own hype or the expectations of the club/support

All managers have to start somewhere and it isn't unnoticed that some on here use the 'what does he know, he's only an Under 23 manager' as a stick with which to beat him...

So how did Brendan Rodgers get his first job? Under 23 coach under Mourinho at Chelski and look at what he achieved

I hate to say it but it's true that the small coatal club down the road have used a similar path with more than a modicom of success

For me, Steve Morison showed in January he has the nouse/contacts to bring in some surprisingly good talent and, for me, he deserves the opportunity and backing to bring in what he wants and give it a good go

Some, of course, will disagree, as is their prerogative... :ayatollah:

It all depends on how the transfer market goes. If he’s given the funds to get who he wants to bring in on a reasonable budget then yes we can improve. But my worry is we will be getting priced out on our top targets. I could be wrong, I hope I am. But if we start getting freebies from league 1 and from Scotland or relying on more academy players then I fear the worst. SM talks a good game with the way he wants to play, I just hope we get the players he wants to fit into his style of play. It’s a hard one to call so I’m not convinced yet.

All depends on how much support he gets from the club :bluescarf:

Def deserves a chance , earned that right.

Has to be backed from above as can’t assemble a quality on thin air.
Can only do so much with No money.
£5mill from Kieffer Moore should be put in the pot for Morison as we desperately need a striker.

I will say he deserves a chance, but the jury is out with me.

I’ve voted yes, as their is NO one out their any better to work under this Regime and virtually No money.

I think now he has a full pre season ahead and chance to clear out he will get his go at creating his own squad who he believes in. He sounds like he knows what he wants. He’s more believable than when Harris was here anyway. :bluebird: :bluebird:

Fully deserves his chance. He was brought in to keep us up and did that comfortably. A lot of people had us going to wire to stay up but we've been safe for weeks. Seems capable of delivering a decent playing style and worked well in a difficult transfer window. I just hope he's backed in the summer.

Anyone talking of playoffs needs a reality check if that's what they are expecting him to achieve in his first full season and after a major rebuild. Going off the negativity of some of the comments I've seen online, I feel some people are already waiting for him to fail.

Rodger’s bombed at Watford and Reading before being gifted Sousas overly defensive team which just needed a bit of flair. So the jacks was his third job

But, without repeating the rationale that this was a lazy decision, I am moving onto I reckon he is a old school manager and not a first team coach.
For me we have needed a DoF, someone Vinny trusts to run the business as he gets swayed by popular managers into making strange transfers, perhaps it’s SM
Pep or Klopp couldn’t have done with this season’s squad, we gambled, rode our luck but may have got away with it and now we look forward to an entirely different future
I reckon he can pull a squad together and just as importantly he needs to add experience of the style he wants to play coaches to his team

He is a bit too Millwall for me, nobody likes me attitude which he’ll need adapt, I know some find it refreshing but not in todays world he hasn’t achieved enough to earn that rebel tag, he just looks like someone who is not ready for a relatively public role

As long as he puts a decent balanced squad together we can always replace him with a better coach at Christmas if it’s not working

Very well put Chris. Recent results, in my opinion, have been mostly down to the reasons you've stated and I feel Morrison could have taken a bit less stick had he been a bit smarter in the way he has reacted (particularly to the Swansea result). Sometimes you just have to suck it up and accept responsibility.

That being said, I'm happy to give him a chance and I feel he can take us forward given the right backing from above.

(Bale and Ramsey would be a nice start ;) )

A great OP Chris and like me you have positivity about you.
It’s tiring as hell listening to the moans and negativity on here where it’s on almost every thread.

Morison is up up against it but when, as fans of Cardiff, are we ever coasting comfortably? Very rare if ever

We all hope he has some backing but it is what it is we’re working under a strict budget and I can go along with that.

It’s a yes from me.

I agree; particularly that the manager doesn't help himself and the Swans reaction was an error of judgement that set him back a long way in the eyes of many

I understood that and despite my playing the game/result down at the time (in an effort to ward off those horrid neanderthals that infest this Forum come that game) it hurt and it hurt a lot

But beyond that, I honestly believe he has achieved way more than expected and deserves and opportunity to forge his own identity and style on the squad

Bale (and maybe Ramsey) would buoy up this club beyond and it may yet happen, if the circumstances are right

I quite like him and will give him a chance, it will be interesting.

Despite that I voted no, because you can take a little gamble with an unexperienced Goalie or right back, if it fails you always have some back up, but a Manager?

I just don't get it, I would get the best I could possibly afford, a good one will save you more money by not wasting it on Bristol's pensioners and overrated over paid flops from elsewhere.

I'm not saying he can't do a good job he may, but I would go for someone like Sean Dyce and sell him the dream, we can be a much bigger club than Burnley!

We've got a clean slate with a chance of a complete rebuild, we shouldn't waste this opportunity!

Thanks, Paul

You know me well enough that, like you, I am as positive as I can be about our club. I am not daft enough not to understand there are 'issues' or that league position-wise we are no better than we were when Vincent Tan took over. That saddens me hugely...

But it's not Steve Morrison's fault; he took us away from a real relegation fight and Championship security that belied our position when he took over

He was the choice of the majority after Mick McCarthy (I can raise the threads for the Goldfish) and he did better than most expected

He made sweeping changes, introduced players who could do their jobs and got a deserved early contract extension to his contract

For me, the man has earned his opportunity and I will be behind him until he proves otherwise; which hopefully he won't

In some cases, I think those 'knocking' him need to look at their agendas and realise the man is doing the best he can with what he has/will have at his disposal

But then again, maybe I'm just a 'chump/chimp' for being positive about the club I love and have supported through thick and mainly thin for so many years!

This club ain't done yet; we just need to reset and that might take a little time...! :ayatollah: :bluescarf: :bluebird:

Good positive post although I voted no for the reasons I gave, I'm still quietly optimistic, that was a fantastic January window he just had, I hope he can replicate it

Easy Yes from me.
I believe he will go from strength to strength and we might have to fend off poachers trying to get him eventually.
Promotion in two seasons with him :occasion5:

Great post Chris and as you know, it's a yes from me for all the reasons already stated.

It's going to be an interesting summer and a massive task for SM but based on January's miraculous recruitment, I think he can do it but needs to be fully backed by the board. Surely KM's sale frees up essential funds plus a dramatic lowering of the wage bill?

I usually think you get a flavour after 12 games but really know just after Christmas as to how we're doing.

Actually agree with 100% of this. And I voted yes too for same reasons

I have no problem with Morrison, but voted 'not sure' as I don't think that the club will currently support any manager we have in post.

Deserves a chance. Needs backing. Knows the financial limitations.

Everyone deserves a chance, he took the job on and we were at a low ebb , there are signs of promise, so let's back the fella and the promising youngsters.
