A geek's view on the Welsh media

Hmmm... :geek:

Being a Cardiff City fan I often feel our failure is greeted with glee within the Welsh media. Don't say this too loud, but most media people in Wales have little or no interest in sport. When they do then it is only rugby. This is rather like the general population in Wales. Don't get me wrong there a few football loving people in the Welsh media although they do tend to like sport in general. It is the ones who have casual glimpse at the sporting world with a careless disregard.

The day before the play off final Cardiff this year the Western Mail ran with a story about Ian Holloway. Apparently, he admired Welsh rugby team coach Warren Gatland. A big picture of said rugby coach dominated the page. That was a very clever bit of mind games by Mr. Holloway.

Back in June the Wales rugby team played South Africa. It was a meaningless friendly, but in rugby they like to call them 'Tests'. The Western Mail has been desperate to link that practice... sorry Test match, with the football World Cup. A two page article runs the usual run of the mill 'rainbow nation' stuff and the impact of such a huge event, but still manages to push rugby into the equation.
No matter how much they like to build up rugby it isn't a truly global sport. It's a colonial sport.

I do wonder if Messers Ramsey, Collinson, Ledley and Bale live up to their potential and somehow make it to Brazil 2014 then rugby may never recover. Football doesn't threaten football in Wales when it is Liverpool or Manchester United. A lot of people are hypocritical. They love Liverpool or Manchester United, but hate England. They are threatened if Cardiff or Swansea makes the Premier League or Wales make a World Cup.

Then a few will quietly grumble within the Taffia.

The Western mail was Always Rugby first and BBC Wales.

Echo more for us in my opinion, but over all they put the Eggs first in the past

I think this has been blatantly obvious to most football fans in Wales for quite some time. :( :(
