Josh Laurent on the radar
Friday 29th April 2022
Reading midfielder Josh Laurent is a target for Cardiff City this summer.
The Bluebirds were interested in signing the 26-year-old two years ago when he left Shrewsbury Town, but he eventually opted for the Royals, for whom he has been a key feature in the middle of the park.
But his contract runs out at the end of the season and Cardiff have let their interest be known. They are not the only ones, though.
The player is thought to have a number of admirers and it won't be plain sailing if Cardiff are to nab his signature. With the club operating within such a strict wage budget, the money they are able to offer might be a factor in the player's decision, with rivals likely to be able to offer more than Cardiff.
The main sticking point could be Laurent's wages, City would have to negotiate hard and offer probably more than they would want to.
At Cardiff, though, he would be the main man. With Will Vaulks, Leandro Bacuna, Marlon Pack and Joe Ralls all currently heading out of contract, the Bluebirds need a complete rebuild in central midfield. Laurent, 26, would be the main man if he were to be temped to south Wales, one would think.
Steve Morison is thought to be an admirer of the midfielder, who has 85 Championship appearances to his name. Cardiff want leaders and they will need at least some experience put back into the squad following this summer's mass player exodus. Contact is believed to have been made between the two parties, but money could be an issue.
One suspects Laurent's name will feature on many Championship club's wish lists in the weeks and months to come, so it is one to watch...
