Robin Friday

Thu Apr 21, 2022 12:24 pm

Hi Cardiff fans, I'm currently studying football Journalism at University and I'm looking to write an article for my football magazine website on "the greatest players you never saw" and I thought what better way to kick it off with the very player that coined the phrase: Robin Friday. I would be very interested to hear any stories you might have from Friday's career, whether you had the pleasure of watching him play or maybe any relatives that did. Was he really the character the media portrayed him as off the pitch? Any replies would be greatly appreciated and will be credited in my article if I use them. Feel free to email me too at Joe@theaftermatch.net. Thank you in advance!

Someone’s done a book on him years ago titled something like “Englands greatest player you never saw”.

Great book that is. Isnt it Guigsy who used to be in oasis who helped write it?

There was talk about a film adaptation as well but not heard anything about that for a while.

Saw his debut v Fulham on New Years Day, 1977.. from what I remember, him and Paul Went made their debuts, and Bobby Moore and George Best would play for Fulham, although Best stayed on the bench. I recall Oxford bags, pie shoes, and DMs everywhere, also skinheads as the fashion.

I can still see Friday scoring at the Grange End, second half, with a trick that sent the defender the wrong way, and I think he scored at the Canton first half. Seemed a player who every time he got the ball, something good would happen.. with rolled down socks, and that got the crowd up.

Also recall the ‘Thief’ chant every time Moore touched the ball.

Happy memories.. bring back the Grange.
