MARK HUDSON DEFENCE COACH

Sun Apr 17, 2022 8:29 am

I did ask the question 6 weeks after his appointment had anything improved and was slated on here
He's hardly had time to bed in etc
With a few games left this season i still cannot see a big improvement to our defence since bamba and morrison played together a few seasons back
We have swapped and changed personnel at the back all season but still to me we don't look tactically sound at the back
Just asking the question has hudsons appointment made the difference as our defence coach.

I don't think there's a straightforward answer to this. A big part of the equation is the players themselves. If they keep making basic mistakes as they have been doing, that can't be laid at the door of the defensive coach. If however our defence is bolstered with quality signings in the close season and still underperforms next season then yes you would be right question Hudson's coaching ability. and what value if any his appointment has provided.

Still boils down to personnel and not coaching. Remember this has been going on under several coaches and not just the present incumbent. Got to give the guys a window to put this right.

Now that’s a player that should be still here, Sol Bamba :bluescarf:

After an initial period (the one at which point you made your original comment only weeks after Mark Hudson was appointed) there was a period when when we gained a couple of new defenders, Cody Drameh and Alfie Doughty, went into 'Super Mario' mode and pulled away from the relegation fight at warp speed...

Clearly, the impact of the coaching team had the desired effect and Mark Hudson was part of that

The last few games have been disappointing to concede goals so early but each one can be put down to individual errors (as I guess all goals can be) and I think blaming the coach is sometimes the easy out when some of the players at our (current) disposal are a little inconsistent

Big things expected this summer and next season will be the time to judge all involved

He will certainly need better players both in defence and defennsive midfield to improve the defence

Exactly as I see it and since before MH was appointed we were shipping on average 1.7 goals a game. Since his arrival that has dropped to 1.3 per game which given mainly the same personnel available, Drameh and Doughty aside, that is a big improvement.

At the same time before MH arrived we were scoring 0-8 goals a game on average in the games since we are scoring on average 1.3 goals a game again a massive improvement on where we were. But scoring 1.3 goals and conceding 1.3 goals sort of explains why we are hit and miss and how individual errors, in particular from defenders, hurt us so badly.

This summer transfer window will be massive as we try to move away from the head it, kick it and block it type of CB we currently have to more footballing type CB who are comfortable on the ball and able to play out from the back.

For me its the philosophy with our personnel that's the problem.

I have no problem with three at the back if two are actually ball players but we have four who would be better suited to a 442 stoppers role. (Flint,Morrison, Nelson & McGuiness) and NG a converted 442 fullback.

Why we sacrifice a midfielder for the third limited centre half is beyond me. I can only hope that this is what Steve M wants to do next season and he'll get the personnel to be able to play that way.

You defend as a team and its often the Alamo if the midfield are out gunned.

I doubt Hudson would have fancied the outside berth in a 3.

Nothing to say, monty.. ?

You finally get an opportunity to engage and debate, but no...

Quick enough to play 'have a pop at Sven' for pointing out your naivety though, eh? ;)

I don't know the answer to this but did Hudson ever play in such a set up and of those we have, who has before Morisons reign.
