Steve Morison: 'It's horrendous!' & 'shambolic'

'It's horrendous!' Steve Morison laments Cardiff City's 'shambolic' early defending at Hull City

The Bluebirds went two goals behind within the first 11 minutes and were unable to claw things back

Manager Steve Morison was furious at his team's "shambolic" defending in their 2-1 defeat at Hull City.

It was a calamity of errors for both goals. Mark McGuinness' woeful backpass to Dillon Phillips afforded Allahyar the opportunity to round the goalkeeper and put the ball into the back of the net for the opener.

And just minutes later, a poor clearance from McGuinness, which was mis-controlled by Cody Drameh into the path of Regan Slater, who slid the ball into Lewie Coyle's path and the Tigers man lashed home to double the lead.

Despite a spirited fightback, including a late goal for Aden Flint, Cardiff could not get back on terms. They had performed a tremendous turnaround win at Reading last week but just couldn't do the same on Humberside. The early defending left Morison fuming.

STEVE MORISON:

"Did we deserve anything out of it? On balance of chances, yes, and overall control and dominance in the second half. But it doesn't matter, we lost the game. I'm not going to fluff it up," he said.

"We were 2-0 down, it's like starting at a deficit, it's ridiculous. But I was really pleased with the second half. It shows you can dominate teams, I was just gutted we didn't quite get another goal."

On the defending, he added: "It's horrendous. I'm not going to focus on it. I'm going to focus on the second half because I don't want to create unnecessary headlines. It was shambolic stuff first half, well, the first 10 minutes."

The manager was, though, encouraged by the second-half display, spurred on by the introductions of creative forces Tommy Doyle and Rubin Colwill. Morison, however, believed it was simply because the players actually started carrying out the game plan.

"It wasn't the introductions [of Tommy Doyle and Rubin Colwill], it was the fact they carried out what we asked them to do; move them around, switch the ball, create pockets, play to our strengths. And we did that," he added.

"Rubin, Tommy and that were excellent. So was Oli Denham. I was really pleased with the second half."

Stop playing 3 centre halfs then

He fluffed up his tactics against Swansea now it's the players not his selection or tactics against Hull, he's always in denial

Every time we lose he rants but he’s got to take more responsibility for again not getting the selection and tactics right.
Just because Hull had a back 3 doesn’t mean he had to match them up.
Ok, Ralls was unfit so he had to replace him but surely there’s a way around having a so called like for like replacement in Vaulks. He lacks the basic skills. He just can’t be here next season.
Why pick Flint? Nelson has just come back from injury and did well at Reading so surely keep him in plus if he didn’t want to play Ng as needed height then either McGuinness or Denham instead.
As for McGuinness I’ve never been that impressed as he has problems with controlling and passing the ball; Denham looks a better prospect IMO.
If Colwill and Doyle are fit then they should play every game.
Overall I’ve no issue with trying different players but not change for changes sake.

Many people are missing the point here. Its all about building a squad capable of playing different formations and yesterday those players came up short. This is why there will be a big clear out in the summer. The players that can't adapt will be gone. Look at it this way, when Harris came in he got a tune out of these players for a while then it went tits up, likewise McCarthy so what does that tell you. For me its the players and not the manager that are inconsistent. I hope that will change after the summer but it won't change before.

There is no point in picking players though who the manager ALREADY knows just aren’t good enough ie lacking the requisite basic skills such as passing, control and movement. Vaulks and Flint fall into that category.
Morison has seen enough of these 2 to say right you’ll not be here next season so I won’t play you any more like he’s done with Pack and Bacuna.
The problem with giving everyone a game at this stage of the season is that there’s no continuity- by all means swap one or two but SEVEN!
Surely Morison looked at his midfield yesterday and saw without Ralls, Doyle or Colwill there was no player capable of receiving a ball from the back 3 and doing anything with it so the back 3 resorted to their default style which we’ve seen all season and thought had been consigned to history at Reading ie slow sideway passing before an aimless punt by Flint.
That was inexcusable from Morison.
So yes he changed it at half time and the creativity returned with no aimless lumps up top. That was the formation he should have started with.
In our remaining games he surely can’t play a back 5 and perm any 3 of his centre backs plus he can’t start with Vaulks.

Since losing to the jacks the crap thrown at Morrison is mad, people on here were saying now we are safe we need to make changes and try youngsters and different tactics ready for next season now we lost again its wrong that he is doing it.

Since the new year Morrison has done a great job 1 game against the jacks and thats it all turn on him laughable really.

How is it morrisons fault that our defenders do a bad pass back? its the players fault as Morrison has said the player hopefully didnt sleep last night and resolve it himself.

There is a lot of work to be done and with the right support getting hungry players in and rid of the rubbish we have mostly senior players with Morrison maybe we can have a good season next season as this one is gone and thankfully we are not in league 1 next season as we would have if it was not for Morrison

the only thing i would criticise is, when he says about the bad defending and says he wont focus on it, its slightly annoying as defensively we have made silly mistakes soo many times this season, he needs to focus on it, and he needs to have some words with the lads, we cannot keep making silly mistakes all the time

Morison can't legislate for players making a poor pass that costs us a goal. It's not as though McGuinness was signed from some parks team, he came from Arsenal, where as a basic requirement is to pass the ball.
I agree there does seem to be a lot of have having a go at Morison since the Swansea game.
He is obviously having a look at different players and formations, so cut him some slack I say.

If at the end of this later part of a season where we win one lose we get the right balance then I'm okay with experimentation , thought they did well to beat Reading after the Swansea result , let's see what happens Monday .

Basically our defenders are not good enough. The wing backs are good going froward but can't defend and all the centre half's have a mistake in them.

This is the big area Morison needs to address next season. We don't keep clean sheets anymore so we have to score at least twice to win games.
