STEVE MORISON:

Steve Morison confirms Alex Smithies will leave Cardiff City, main reason wages will be lower next season, so Smithies has sold his house in Wales.

"He has been excellent for us. Between us not being able to financially compete with where he is and what he would require.'

Injuries?

All good. Everyone is fit.

Morison

What players do you want?

"Ambitious people, who are ambitious as us. They want to play for the club and play for me. People who have got that drive and willingness to succeed. You have to get the balance, people who know the level and what it’s like to play in the Championship."

"People are still trying to find their level like Tommy and Cody Drameh."

Objective to keep club up, be good to finish high as possible, but you’ll be judged next season?

"We are looking at next season from a planning, recruitment point of view, trying to do deals for next season. But we have a plan for tomorrow and for Monday. But the next priority is Hull and then a little more will go into that today. Hopefully it all goes to plan and we will be ready for Monday as well."

"It’s a great time as a fan and a player, two games in quick succession. Main focus right now is Hull."

STEVE MORISON:

Switched to four at the back, that the future for Cardiff?

"It’s too simplistic to do just one thing. If you are Liverpool and Man City you can go and handpick your players, the best in the world, then you can be quite rigid in what you do.

From our point of view. We would like a balanced squad next year, resources to play four at the back or three. It’s not something to get too focused on and caught up in.

It’s about getting the personnel in the building. It’s about getting the right people in the building. The formation that got us out of the trouble we were in was three at the back and two up top! Let’s just look at the way we are going about our business and the way we are playing, regardless of what shape we are playing on paper."

Steve Morison wants to change Cardiff City's style of play next season:

Started at Reading Away:

Steve Morison ripped up the playbook and opted for a 4-2-3-1 which dropped a centre-back and found room to accommodate both Tommy Doyle and Rubin Colwill, a quite potent creative force in tandem. It was a system designed to facilitate a different style of play, too, one that encouraged Cardiff's more attacking players to see more action and for the Bluebirds to hold more possession of the ball.

STEVE MORISON:

"We tried it initially but then we realised we needed to be a bit more pragmatic in what we did. It was about getting results and we did. Even going into the Swansea game we were in a really good run of form, so we stayed that way.“

"We had one day with the team for Swansea, so I couldn't have done any more with the team in terms of going into that game. I had one day, the Friday, because everyone was away on international duty, especially players who would have played. We went with what we knew and it didn't work, for whatever reason.

"We had planned to play this team in this way leading into this game because we knew what Reading were going to play, they were going to play 4-2-3-1, so we knew we would be matching up shape. We spoke about it before the Swansea game and some players knew they would be playing this game. Because we had a free week we could work on it properly, we worked on it on Tuesday and Thursday.

"You can see that it's a personnel-driven shape. You can't just do it with any player because it could go wrong really quickly. It almost did a couple of times! Rubin came into the pocket and he passed the ball straight to them and they nearly scored; you're just sitting there going, 'Oh no!'

"But when you get it right... our two goals were fantastic goals."

On whether the new formation will inform his summer recruitment strategy, Morison added: "You want to be able to do both. You want to be able to play in different ways. You want personnel that, when you know you are coming up against a team who are really good in a 3-5-2 or a 3-4-3, then you can match them up to do it. If you want to play a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-4-2 you want to have the ability to do that.

"Having Nels back was great because we had the ability to go with someone who is really good in one-v-one situations. That's why he came

STEVE MORISON:

Three at the back due to personnel?

"I just think it was the best way to get the most out of the personnel we had. That’s proved to be the case as we have stayed up quite convincingly, now, 20 points clear of the bottom.

It took a little bit of time to get there - but we have been safe for quite a while now.

We were really helped out in January by the players who came in, they really helped out.

I’m confident the work we do in the off-season and the way we will look next season then we won’t need to make wholesale changes in the January and we’ll be in a much better position."

STEVE MORISON:

Not daunted by summer?

"It’s exciting! Normally you get a job in football, you take over a team in a bad place. That’s what we did. From our point of view it’s doing the job best we could.

Any manager who stays in a job longer than six months, a couple of transfer windows to do your own thing, that’s when you get judged properly.

By the time we get to January next year you can judge us properly, if we make that period of time it means we will be doing our job right. That’s what our career will be based off, as a manager.

It’s exciting times for everyone. The fans, the media, the club, the people within are really excited about it. It’s an exciting journey."

Steve Morison:

Hull thoughts?

"A team that’s not mathematically safe. They are still fighting for their lives, like the Reading game, but they are all right, where they are in the league.

They are going through a period. They have got new owners. They have brought a new manager in, results have been up and down but the last one against Middlesbrough was a great one.

A lot of people there being Good Friday."

STEVE MORISON:

How did you feel when safety was guaranteed?

"It wasn’t something we had focused on. It just makes it easier to talk to the media, there is a little bit less pressure.

I was really uncomfortable with the questions over being this many points clear. Because you can lose four on the bounce and be three points above safety.

It was an emotional time off the back of the week before. It just gives a clarity and there is no worry about relegation fears anymore.

It was also a reconnection for us. It was not a time to shut off and go through the motions. We have got some huge games coming up.

Hull, Reading still fighting, Luton around the play-offs. Two games at home. Birmingham is the only game that won’t have anything on it.

There are huge games there and it’s making sure we are connected. In terms of young players it’s about the loan players chomping at the bit, making sure they want to play football.

Nelson has missed a large chunk of the season so he is in a driving mood wanting to finish the season strongly this season."

Re: STEVE MORISON:

Apparently Steve Morison has a leak in his camp and one of his staff are giving the media the whole first team 24 hours before a match, it’s been happening a lot.

Paul Abbandonato of media Wales was putting it out on Twitter.

Worrying that / Not good:

Paul Ince and Steve Morison disagree on 'rubbish' team news leak prior to Reading FC vs Cardiff
The Reading and Cardiff City managers had their say in the post-match press conferences regarding one issue in particular, after Steve Morison spoke out about 'leaked' team news on social media

STEVE MORISON:

"We had all the nonsense last night with the team coming out," Morison vented in his post-match press conference. "Maybe that first five and ten minutes wouldn't have happened if Reading didn't know our team news as they wouldn't have had a clue who we were going to play."

He then added: "I was really disappointed.”

“I feel I have to be careful because I think it's very anti-Cardiff if I'm being honest with you as you are giving Reading the advantage and the upper hand.”

“Yet, we are coming here to win the game and I feel we had given them the advantage before a ball was kicked, even though you didn't know 100 percent if it is true.”

STEVE MORISON:

Feather in the cap to reach your goal with 6 games left?

"We were given a job to do. We’ve done it and it’s quite emphatic in how we’ve done it.

It’s about making sure we didn’t lose focus of our work. It’s really pleasing. You set out to do something. I’ve enjoyed putting a plan together and seeing it come together.

When you are u23s manager, you are asked if you can do it, you say yes, internally you’re not sure if you can!

Now it’s about putting something together to make sure aren’t down there next season. It’s about getting to January and being in with a push towards the end of the season."

STEVE MORISON:

Finances, will it be a bit of a battle?

"It’s fine. I’m really comfortable with it. There are no grey areas.

It might go to the end, closer to the start of pre-season before you start seeing signings and stuff.

You’ve put markers out there, you’ve given figures you can pay and want to pay and they’ll be ringing around the other clubs seeing if they can get better elsewhere.

It’s a waiting game, because people will soon see the landscape of football has changed.

We want to be best of the rest (barring the top teams/relegated teams), I want people to be here and part of something successful.

The work we’ve done, the conversations, word of mouth, playing at Cardiff City Stadium, the training ground. You can only sell yourself as much as you can.

They are working hard putting presentations together, proving to people what we are doing and showing them why they should play for us.

Hopefully all the hard work will pay off when you start seeing people coming through the door."

Steve Morison confirms Cardiff City will release Alex Smithies and explains why

Thursday 14th March 2022

Steve Morison has confirmed that Cardiff City will release Alex Smithies this summer, with the player unable to reach a wage agreement and wanting to move closer to home.

The Bluebirds have 10 players out of contract at the end of this season and Smithies is the first domino to fall, so to speak, with many more expected to leave. It is understood that the goalkeeper, 32, is one of Cardiff's highest earners and the club are looking to drastically lower the wage bill in the off-season.

Smithies has been a stellar servant to the club over the last four years, having ousted Neil Etheridge from that No. 1 spot and keeping Dillon Phillips out of the side, both of which are no mean feats. He has largely been a dependable figure between the sticks but Cardiff are trying to cut their cloth accordingly and tough decisions will have to be made.

It means Phillips will continue as first-choice goalkeeper for the remainder of the current season. Rohan Luthra was named on the bench for the first time at Reading, too, with George Ratcliffe having suffered an injury in the lead-up to the game.

STEVE MORISON:

"He won't be here next year," Morison said to WalesOnline when asked about Smithies. "He has been excellent for us. Between us not being able to financially compete with where he is and what he would require and the fact he wants to get closer to home in the north of the country.

"He gave us everything he could. Once the Swansea game was out of the way, we had a conversation and I think it's right that Dillon plays for the rest of the season as it's someone who is here next year.

"We thank Alex for everything he has done. It's just where we are at. Then the next training session, George Ratfcliffe gets injured! Rohan got his opportunity and he has been fantastic, he is someone who will be here next year as well. It's an opportunity for him to grow and get exposure to a first-team environment over the next month, ready for next season."

Recent reports have linked Cardiff with St Mirren goalkeeper Jak Alnwick. However, when asked about Cardiff's interest in the 28-year-old, who counts Rangers and Newcastle United among his former clubs, Morison remained tight-lipped.

"We are going to be linked to loads of people, because we have got loads of people out of contract," the Bluebirds boss added. "I've seen stories about loads of strikers we are interested in apparently!

"We have had conversations with lots of people, but I'm not going to talk about anyone who is currently at another football club, that's not right."

More out-of-contract players are expected to leave in the coming months. At time of writing, all of Joe Ralls, Sean Morrison, Will Vaulks, Aden Flint, Isaac Vassell, Ciaron Brown, Marlon Pack, Leandro Bacuna and Josh Murphy will see their deals run out in June.

Match facts:

Hull City are looking to complete a league double over Cardiff City for the first time since 2015-16 under Steve Bruce.

Cardiff have won two of their last 11 away league visits to Hull (D4 L5), winning 2-0 in February 2011 and 2-0 in April 2018.

This will be only Hull’s second home Good Friday league match this century, with their other game coming back in April 2007 against Norwich, losing 2-1.

Cardiff have lost 20 of their last 27 Good Friday league matches (W3 D4) and lost 1-0 last year at home to Nottingham Forest.

Hull have lost their last six home league matches and defeat in this match will see them break a club record for consecutive home league defeats, also enduring a six-game losing run between September and November 1992 when they played at Boothferry Park.
