ADAM Matthews has been challenged by manager Dave Jones to show character and put his own goal at Ipswich Town behind him.
And Jones admitted: “I did the identical thing when I was playing.”
The City manager wants to see Matthews put that experience behind him during training this week as the squad prepares for Saturday’s clash with Millwall at Cardiff City Stadium.
“I want to see a brightness about Adam in training today,” said Jones.
Teenager Matthews was sent on for injured Kevin McNaughton immediately after half-time at Ipswich, given the nod ahead of Paul Quinn.
“He had a great opportunity and if he doesn’t show a lot of character it’ll be a fair time before he gets it again,” said Jones after the Bluebirds lost 2-0. “When you come to the end of your career it’s something you’ll be remembered for. What’s in his head? I haven’t got a clue.
“I haven’t got time to molly-coddle people. It’s a man’s world and it’s a tough old world and you’ve got to pick yourself up.
“It’s easy to blame the youngster for the goal. Yeah, Adam’s given it away, but we lost it in midfield. We let pressure come on to us, we made some silly decisions and there was a build-up to that.
“But you can’t legislate for where Adam’s headed it and I’ve done that myself in my career. It’s about how you bounce back. And he’s got to bounce back quick otherwise he’ll find himself dumped in the reserves and not playing football.
“I want to see him come in Monday morning and have a brightness about him and be ready because it’s gone.
“You can’t do anything about it except learn from it and get stronger and we’ll work on that. We know we’ve got a talent, but there’s other parts of the game as well.
“He’s got to be stronger and better than that. With the second goal as well, he’s been shoved off it too easy and it’s welcome to the real world.
“But he’s got a talent and he’s got to start showing that. These are the games that you’re thrown into and you’ve got to say, ‘I want to keep that shirt’. There weren’t too many out there in the second half who said to me, ‘okay, we’ve got players coming back, we’re going to do it right’. So it makes my job easier.”
Two second-half goals sent City crashing and Jones said: “We were poor after the interval. Passing went going astray, we weren’t getting forward quickly enough.
“We ran up blind alleys and that’s not us. It crept in during the second half at Leicester and again today.
“We have to be better than that. We’ve got to be more solid, we’ve got to be more fluent, we’ve got to dig, we’ve got to fight. Okay we’re playing nice football and everything else but we have to scrap. Ipswich did, but we didn’t match that.”

My bet - he'll come back better for it.

This outburst by DJ is a clear indication of the pressure he is under and when this guy is under pressure he will say anything. As regards the "Reserve Team" everyone including DJ knows that we don't have one, so why say it, as regards missing the opportunity to keep the shirt what about Aaron Wildig.
Against Hull Aaron was given 14 minutes to prove he deserves the shirt, during that time he set up the goal that Rae scored with a perfect reverse pass into his path. His reward is nothing unless you call time at Leicester where the rest of the team and manager threw the towel in at halftime.
In professional team sports the group needs to have an ethos where they win together and lose together DJ has now blown that out of the water with his treatment of Adam. I wonder if he would do the same thing if Craig Bellamy or Michael Chopra made similar mistakes, we all know the answer to that one.
As regards Brian Flynn picking Adam for the Senior Wales Squad why not Adam has been working with Brian at U21 level for a couple of years now. Another thing is that Chris Gunter was playing with the Wales Senior squad before getting regular first team games for the city, and of course Aaron Ramsey couldn't get a starting place in an FA Cup Final but less than 3 months later was playing and scoring for Arsenal in the Champions League.
In short DJ is not a manager who gives youth a chance and is always quick to take them out of the firing line, well thats his story anyway. He prefers to select the experienced players like McPhail and Rae to name a few who as a midfield pairing have been found wanting for a couple of years now.
I have no doubt Adam will get over this, but he will never forget the treatment DJ has dished out to him, I hope Brian Flynn does select him for the Wales Senior Squad against Bulgaria and I hope he plays a blinder in front of DJ.![]()

1. I'm a big AM fan for an 18 year old he's top draw.
2. If DJ hadn't been so protected of him to start with he would and could have played more games and had more game time last season.
3. For me this was DJ deflecting his shortcomings yet again on to 18year old to take the blame for a poor team performance
4. I watch the game on the internet and for the was no fire, no belief, lack of passion is it not DJ's job to get them up for the task.
5. We have the best squad no doubt and yes we have a few players out, but Nil Warnock sides rarely put in sub-standard performances and I don't think Warnock would try and shift the blame on to a kid when the rest of the team didn't perform.
6. f*cking reserve side what a tw*t! just using cliche's

Adam Matthews, yeah should have done better with the own goal, but then had to try and cover the centrebacks for the second. Hudson was stood there with his fooking hand in the air and Gabor was just stood there.
Don't here DJ having a pop at them.
How many mistakes did they make? Quite alot I would say. From not attacking an opposition goal kick and almost conceeding from it, watching the ball from a throwing go across the 6 yard line, to getting pushed off the ball by a 17 year old![]()
Then have a pop at the Midfield. Never closed down and ball watching again and just generally no bollocks.
Instead he has a go at an 18yo kid. Think he should get a bit of support not hung out to dry.

Very good post. I've been sticking up for old misery Guts a lot lately but on this issue he's badly
wrong. There's nothing wrong with saying Adam made a mistake. Nothing wrong with saying he
needs to come back stronger. But to underline it in such a way is pretty much selling the lad out.
We had senior players out there that did not perform, that basically looked like they weren't arsed.
But the guiltiest of them all (McPhail) can do no wrong in DJ's eyes. Bad show Jonesy!

He had a go at all of them. Correct. But there were senior experienced players out there
who just didnt look interested. He didnt NAME any of them. Thats double standards.

I thought the comments in the Echo was very fair for the second goal Hudson threw his arms in the air and Gypes did feck all just stood there. At least AM tried to do some thing....DJ said he was to easily outmuscled
for feck sake Scotland was twice the size of Adam.
The Boy is still 18 years old those sort of comments could destroy the boy. Yes its a mans world but by Christ one of Jone's faults is his man management of players. Perhaps an arm around him and talk threw the game would of been better.
Why didn't Jones ever criticise the likes of Hudson Rae Gypes Mcphail and the likes.
Jones is quick to criticise us the supporters when we have a go at a player who isn't doing the bizz but that's just pot kettle black.
PS we should still stick with DJ till the end of the season.
