‘Cardiff City this evening were totally outplayed ‘

Mon Apr 11, 2022 1:32 pm

Hull City U23’s give Cardiff City U23’S a hammering this season and outplayed Cardiff for the majority of the game, that’s only 2 wins now from Cardiff’s last 10 games after an amazing first-half of the season, which looks likely to cost Cardiff promotion to a higher quality league

U23’s manager Darren Purse has only won 2 in 10 games.

The two sides come into today's clash both sitting in 3rd position in their respective leagues; the Bluebirds are third in the PDL South behind Bristol City and Ipswich Town, whilst the Tigers are chasing Sheffield United and Coventry City in the PDL North.

Cardiff need to win these games if they are to go to a higher standard next season, originally the Bluebirds were running away with this league, but with only 2 wins in their last 9 games under Darren Purse, a win is needed tonight.

U23s Manager Darren Purse offered his pre-match thoughts, hoping that his team can utilise the experience they gained from playing at Cardiff City Stadium last week.

"It's a game that we should be looking to go and try and win," he began. "You can see the improvements in the boys every week, even though we are a young side. Hopefully the stuff we've worked on this week will come out in the game, and we'll improve on the performance from the Barnsley game.

Almost a pointless league (U23)

Handy for half or a full season for graduating the decent U18's we are keeping on as pro's. But by 19 they need to be knocking on the door or out on loan at whatever level getting first team football.

The chances of a club like ours having a good enough squad of U23 to make it at the higher level is remote. Its a proving ground and we have been guilty of keeping kids in there too long (Tommy O'Sullivan springs to mind)

Bellers got us where we are now with the influx of talent by culling nearly all of the U23's a few seasons ago and got the U18's playing in the U23's

I totally agree, Bells cleared all the dead wood and revamped us top to bottom.
Did a great job.

Any idea why George Ratcliffe wasn't involved today? I noted the other U23 GK was on the bench against Reading. Ratcliffe was seen as someone mooted to make it to the first team at one stage but I heard that this may not now be the case. He could of course be injured or ill but as said, I noted his ommision on Saturday and now today and thought someone may know why.

If that’s a “strong side” then one must have been drinking something?

It’s a young side which I’d expect this time of season.

I totally agree with you. No way this can be described as a strong side. I checked the date of birth of the players on duty for the game. There were 2 out of the 15 that I couldn't find and obviously we don't know who the trialist was. The average age of the rest was 18.4 years. Personally I think that's very young for an U23 team.

Do we not need to be in the top academy status for any chance of promotion anyway?
