Sky pundit labels Steve Morison's men as 'pretty average'

Thursday 7th March 2022

Cardiff City are "way, way" off achieving promotion next season but a full pre-season for Steve Morison might make a difference to the club's fortunes, according to Sky pundit and commentator Don Goodman.

It comes in the latest debrief following the Bluebirds' South Wales derby capitulation at the weekend, leaving the Bluebirds fan base flat on the floor. And Goodman believes that Cardiff are a "pretty average team" and have a lot of work to do before they can even think about being promotion contenders again.

"I know they are two clubs that are in transition with new coaches and new players, but let's have it right, they are 16th and 17th. This was their cup final. This was about bragging rights," former West Brom, Sunderland and Wolves player Goodman said on the Sky Sports EFL podcast.

"Swansea were excellent. Fully deserved and they showed what they are capable of. I say this with the greatest of respect, to me, they have gone and walloped a pretty average team. They have beaten an average team.

"The truth for me is these two [Swansea and Cardiff] are way, way off any kind of promotion push if things remain the same next season.

"They are too inconsistent, Swansea, Cardiff are the same. Two very different styles of football. I think they will need an awful lot more [to get promoted]. But that's what the summer is for, that's what the recruitment is all about. That's what coaching is all about. A full pre-season for Steve Morison might make a difference.

"On reflection, if you are a Cardiff fan you are going to be mortified for quite some time."

Can’t disagree with that. Don’t think we will be talking about promotion for a long while, be interesting summer for Morrison to hopefully create his own squad in pre season.

No complaints from me about what he says.

I think most of us would be happy to progress slowly... play better more expansive and attacking football, bringing through the youngsters in a healthy way and to start beating the jacks... promotion is a far off dream for us unless something significantly changes with the clubs resources.
