BREAKING STEVE MORISON:”FRIDAY 8th MARCH 2022 “

Thu Apr 07, 2022 6:42 am

:bluebird: :bluebird: STEVE MORISON MAKES HIS FIRST PUBLIC UPDATE SINCE THE EMBARRASSING JACK DEFEAT, WHERE HE REFUSED TO SPEAK TO THE MEDIA AFTER THE GAME :bluebird: :bluebird:

Friday 8th March 2022

STEVE MORISON:

'Thank you and apologies for not speaking to you guys on Saturday. I did press and Sky. I had to go and deal with some other stuff and by the time I got around it was too late. I do normally speak to you. It wasn’t a refusal or radio silence as was broadcast to the world.'

CARDIFF CITY 0 SWANSEA CITY 4

STEVE MORISON:

"They were four really, really poor goals. It just shows where we are. We are that close to being really good or really poor. We have been really consistent, but with all areas they were better."

"I totally get that it's huge for the fans, the players, it's huge for everyone. But we lost. But we can't do anything about it. The silence in the dressing room said a thousand words. It won't be a very nice place to leave, it won't be a very nice place to be around."

"There were lots of verbals from the people on the side today, as I was standing there as manager, and it is what it is. You've got to take it on the chin."

Best way of getting over it is reaction?

"That’s what we’ll ask of them. That’s what I’ve asked of the players every day in training. Hopefully we’ll have the same response we had after Bristol City, which is another big game we lost. Let’s hope the manager of the month curse struck before we even knew we had it! "

Monday viewed as a new start?

"Exactly. It’s not a case of trying to dismiss what’s gone on before. For me you’re using a negative to try and see a positive result. When it’s a negative you’re trying to pick people up off the floor."

Injury update?

"Everyone’s available. Fully fit squad. Max [Watters] is back in the squad this week. He’ll be available after this weekend. Everyone else is fine apart from the long-terms."

Steve Morison: ‘It’s a good achievement. We had a really good month and it shows that all the hard work we’ve put in has been recognised.”

The Swansea game was a big blow around the place, but this helps to pick us back up. We’ve come a long way and need to keep that work going.’

STEVE MORISON:

The perception among some fans is that it doesn't mean as much to Cardiff players - do you get that?

"No. They only say that because we lost. We’ve got an ex-Cardiff captain in my office. We’ve got Rammers [Tom Ramasut], who’s born and bred Cardiff. Young players in the dressing room. Joe Ralls who’s been here for 10 years.

There were 27,00 in the stadium, there was more press about it. As I said on the day, we didn’t deal with the occasion. Personally, we tried to keep it as normal as possible leading up to it. No different to Liverpool, leading up to it. Big games, stuff they haven’t experienced before. I look at the Wales game. The importance of that was huge for the country. The calibre of players and experience on the pitch was huge. That’s why they dealt with it.

We have to realise that we had a lot of players that have never dealt with it. I look back and think, should I have put a team with more experience out there? Should I have put the Will Vaulks of the world, the Marlon Packs of the world out there to deal with the occasion? I felt I picked the best team. My one decision was Isaak Davies or Mark Harris from a personal point of view. It was the same team that dismantled Stoke.

Isaak [Davies] didn’t start because he played two 90 mins for the U21s and he came in on Thursday and told me he was knackered. That was the decision on why I picked Harris over him. That’s my big learning from it. Should I have put in players more capable of dealing with the occasion a bit better?"

STEVE MORISON:

With seven games to go - is it time to try things for next season?

"At the right time. We had a plan in place all along."

"Funnily enough we have a plan and an idea. "

"Not that anyone seems to believe us. We’ve got an idea what we want to do between now and the end of the season. We’ll do stuff at the right time. It’s not a case of trying stuff for the sake of trying stuff. There has to be a purpose to it. So don’t start expecting to see a load of academy players starting that haven’t been playing. I have an email on my desk [from the EFL] that we have to remember the integrity of the game. Reading and others are playing for a hell of a lot of stuff so we have to remember that."

"Exactly. It’s not a case of trying to dismiss what’s gone on before. For me you’re using a negative to try and see a positive result. When it’s a negative you’re trying to pick people up off the floor. That self-motivation and drive has to come from within. Once you step over that white line that inner belief is for you to bring out. The pressure is tough and sometimes you don’t handle pressure very well as we saw on Saturday."

Takeover talk?

"You have to control the controllable. There’s not a lot I can do about that. First I heard of it was when I saw it in the press over the weekend. No one’s come to me and said anything. Really, that’s not our job. That’s for the powers that be to worry about. I’m sure if anything happens then we’ll be let known accordingly."

STEVE MORISON:

And the derby, the fans are furious about the manner of the defeat...?

"From our point of view we have to look at the bigger picture. We came in on Monday morning and we had to put it to bed. The difference between us and you guys and the fans is that we have to perform again on Saturday and pick the lads up off the floor. What I reiterated to the players is that we all had a tough weekend. Everyone personally, everyone's families, friends. It was a horrible weekend, but ultimately we’ve got to get on with our job and put a performance in on Saturday. As tough as that is to hear and for people to understand that’s the reality of our job. We have to go to work again and we have to make sure these last seven games don't become null and void because we’ve had a terrible result against our arch rivals. No one can get away from that fact."

"But ultimately we’re part of a bigger picture. We’ve done some excellent work and that’s why this morning we’ve been given manager of the month because of how well we’ve done up until that game. My job with my staff is to make sure that we don’t get too sucked into negativity, bad feeling and bad vibes. We’ve got a young group of players that are still learning. For many of them that was their first experience of a derby in front of a crowd and it was a terrible experience for them in the end. We want them to be huge for this football club. We want them to take us forward and win many derbies going forward. So we had to make sure they’re alright."

"I spoke yesterday at a Q&A for the Disabled Supporters Association. Those younger players I feel I need to treat like my own kid. How he must feel after that game. How terrible he must have felt. Coming in on Monday you could still see the look in their eyes of being like a rabbit in headlights, just thinking ‘oh my god, what just happened at the weekend’. For us it’s about helping them grow and make sure it doesn’t happen again."

The majority of the time Steve Morison has been in charge, he has been very lucky to have a a virtually fully fit squad, that has surely helped a lot in his 27 games in charge.

Max Watters is back on the grass but will not be available this weekend. Steve Morison is thinking that next weekend's clash with Hull City might be his first game back after his ankle injury.

Otherwise there are no new complaints. Sean Morrison and Isaac Vassell are the long-term absentees.

For the hosts, Tom Ince will be available again after being ineligible to face his parent club Stoke on Tuesday evening. Andy Rinomhota and Yakou Meite are out for the season, while Alen Halilovic could return after a thigh injury.
