Driving me nuts - Throw ins

Sat Apr 02, 2022 5:15 pm

Three things:

1) throw to feet not bounce it in or to someone's midrift... Basics

2) quicker quicker quicker, Bagan was awful. Pick the ball up, wait for the defenders to be set, it was like asking the swans defenders "are you ok now for me to throw the ball in..."

3). Does Bagan not get on with Ralls...

Great example of not getting the basics right, taking pace out of the game, losing momentum. Let's try... Closest person to the throw takes it as quickly as they can and throws to feet!!!!!!!

we're too slow in everything we do, takes three passes to get the ball wide when one zipped pass would do. Quicker quicker, quicker!!!!!

Excellent post. I’ve been saying the same for years that we’re awful at throw ins.

I'm picking on throw-ins but the same goes for everything we do, not quick enough we lose momentum all the time!

Really needed to be said and 100 per cent factual, if we can see this why can’t the ‘EXPERTS’ ???

With you all the way on this. Can’t understand why we have so few players make themselves available to receive a thrown. Leading to an age required to find someone to throw to. Have to say Bagen looked to have been overcome early with nerves. Said to my son swansea were targeting him from the start. Thought we see Doughty on at half time. Felt Ralls and Wintle played too deep yesterday, and could have had full backs pushing up from the off. Possibly a game to have started Uche to give cabango the chance to get riled early. But, the starting 11 has taken on a lot of good sides this year and run close, including the Liverpool game. Plain and simple I think we bottled it yesterday. And it hurt like hell being there. But as Sven says on another thread, it’s done and got to move on now.

I’ve seen opportunities to take a throw in quickly to an unmarked player but instead we wait till their defenders are ready and then set about a game of head tennis!! Same with goal kicks or just Smithies kicks in general! I complain about it at most games :banghead:

I remember two games specifically when it comes to good throw ins, Sheff Utd away (lost 5-3) and Reading away (I think they beat us something like 5-0). Those teams would never rest, as soon as the ball went out they played it back in immediately. No time to rest. They did the same for corners. Very fluid teams and was great to watch.

I remember going to Derby a few years ago when they beat us 3-1 in the rearranged Snowgate game. They were reacting to the throw in situation the moment it looked like the ball was going into touch. And the ball boys were reacting quickly as well- they were their 12th man. Lots of clubs do this these days. We don't employ enough ball boys and we just seem to amble up to take the throw

Can’t disagree with anything you’ve said. Somehow we’ve found a throw in technique less effective than the old long throw to the front post we used to do for years....

I know Bagan scored those couple of goals a few weeks back but I honestly don’t rate him. Just my opinion.

He is inconsistent, he can be the best player on the pitch and the worst, he's young Morison will probably improve him and I think he'll make it.

And crosses...

How poor were they on Saturday?!

Every one over hit and way too high.

I agree with both and that inconsistency is something that needs to be resolved.

I was certainly surprised that he got the nod in front of Doughty for such a huge game, Bagan may be more of a goal threat but against a possession team like Swansea surely Doughty was the better option ?

If we get some good experienced competition there for next season I think it will push his game on further and also provide strong backup for games where he isn't best option, out of form or injured
