LOOKING AHEAD TO NEXT SEASON: WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO KEEP?

Thu Mar 24, 2022 11:00 pm

It's great to reminisce and discuss the past when it's relevant but lately it has has gotten a little out of hand with everything being linked back to different times and circumstances for our beloved club

Surely, with Steve Morison doing such a great job in the present, it's time to look forward and not backwards with a very busy and interesting Summer to come?

Under Steve Morison, we have some hope that the assembled squad for next season will be competitive, based on youth but with some experience to guide them through. New players will surely come in but where do we stand with those (a) at the end of their contracts, (b) maybe now considered surplus to requirements, (c) gone out 'on loan' to gain 'form' and/or 'experience' with other clubs, or (d) come in 'on loan' and done such a grand job?

In-contract, out-of-contract or on loan (in or out), who would you like to keep for next season from the list below?

Alex Smithies
Dillon Phillips
Mark McGuinness
Joel Bagan
Sean Morrison
Aden Flint
Curtis Nelson
Cody Drameh
Perry Ng
Will Vaulks
Leandro Bacuna
Joe Ralls
Ryan Wintle
Alfie Doughty
Marlon Pack
Tommy Doyle
Rubin Colwill
Sam Bowen
Eli King
Jordan Hugill
Uche Ikpeazu
Isaac Vassell
James Collins
Mark Harris
Max Watters
Isaak Davies
James Connolly

Hard to disagree with your list, Sam

Personally, I would keep Sean Morrison as a priority. He should be captain again and still has enough to contribute positively on the pitch (once fit)

Josh Murphy will 100% be away and I'm (sadly) confident Sam Bowen will be on his way, too. He's apparently got a poor attitude, has fallen out with management and was on his way to Newport County until his injury; so I expect him to (disappointingly) leave this Summer :(

Andrew, even though it hasn’t quite worked out for Murphy here I think he would be suited to the way we play now and I would keep him but because he is out of contract then I wouldn’t renew. As for Flint I would keep as long as he takes a dramatic drop in wages. Whyte I would keep as I think our style now would suit him better. Smithies needs to take a dramatic drop in wages to even contemplate staying, I think Dillon Phillips is more than capable and is not on a fortune.

Sam I hear what you're saying but IMO, JM is too much of a risk. All opinions though

Chris,

First I honestly believe if we had speculated and bought Harry Wilson with Kieffer Moore upfront we would of been Top 2 this season, with all the other quality youngsters and a few old heads around them.

We must look to get a quality midfielder and striker like them two if we want to go up next season.

WHO WOULD I WANT TO KEEP?

Below are the players I would keep.

Alex Smithies
Dillon Phillips
Mark McGuinness
Joel Bagan

Aden Flint

Cody Drameh
Perry Ng
Will Vaulks

Joe Ralls as Captain
Ryan Wintle

Tommy Doyle
Rubin Colwill

Eli King
Jordan Hugill
Uche Ikpeaz ?? Jury is still out

Isaak Davies

Gavin Whyte

Kieron Evans??

I'd be happy to keep Vaulks as a squad player providing we get Bacuna and Pack off the books ASAP and bring in a few face faces in the middle.

I can't really disagree with that, Annis; but sadly, it was never going to happen

The positives are that under Steve Morison, we are on an upward trajectory and we may well find the club backing him with quality young loan players, as they did in January

I have no objections with that and I am just pleased with the general positivity of this thread after some of the tosh that has seen too many threads lately :thumbright:

Sorry I’ve not given my reply.

Due to illness I’ve not found the time and energy to give my opinion. I’ve got to work within limits and that’s not a lot at the moment.

Yes Chris,

Great positivity with this topic and talking about our players for a change and the future.

It would be an exciting next season if we could get good midfielder and a quality striker though.

Steve Morison has brought good football to the first team and excitement.
