Cardiff City face summer scrap if they want to sign

Thu Mar 24, 2022 10:29 am

MY VIEW: NO THANKS Uche was a quick fix.

Wages are massive, over £20,000 a week.

Uche Ikpeazu aged 27, played for 11 different clubs.

9 appearances for Cardiff City so far 3 goals, long may his goals continue :thumbright: :bluebird:

Boro 22 appearances: 3 goals.
Wycombe 33 appearances: 6 goals.
Hearts 40 appearances: 10 goals.
Cambridge United 80 appearances: 22 goals.

Cardiff City face summer scrap if they want to sign Uche Ikpeazu as Middlesbrough transfer stance revealed

The Bluebirds forward has endeared himself to supporters in this part of the world, scoring three useful goals during his loan spell away from Middlesbrough

By Glen Williams Junior Reporter

Thursday 24th March 2022

Cardiff City frontman Uche Ikpeazu has done everything right since moving to the Welsh capital. He has been wholehearted, endeared himself to the Bluebirds faithful and scored a couple of crucial goals during his time here.

It has proved to be a shrewd deadline day move from Steve Morison, who had sounded out Middlesbrough earlier in the window about a potential move for the imposing 27-year-old forward. Ikpeazu has netted more during his time with Cardiff than he did during his half-season on Teesside.

But all the signs seem to point to him not being in Chris Wilder's plans once again next season. Would Cardiff be interested in having him back next term? It certainly can't be discounted, especially if he has a storming back end to the campaign.

So just how viable would that be? And what would Boro's preference be? We sought the expert insight of our man on Teesside, Dominic Shaw , for the inside track on Ikpeazu and the Riverside club's plan for him...

Q. Have you been keeping an eye on Uche's progress at Cardiff? What have you made of it?

Dominic Shaw : I was delighted to see him get off to that flying start with the goal at Barnsley. Ikpeazu wasn't at Boro for very long but quickly established himself as a real favourite on Teesside thanks to his whole-hearted approach and the fact he plays with a smile on his face.

Given Cardiff made it clear Ikpeazu was a target early in January, I did expect him start a few more games, but then I know what Jordan Hugill is all about as a striker thanks to the Teessider's stint at Boro. I can't imagine there are many Championship centre-halves who enjoy playing against either!

Q. What went wrong for him at Boro? Seemed to be bombed out of the squad pretty quickly under Wilder?

DS : It was simply a case of Ikpeazu not being the right fit for the way Wilder wants to play at Boro. Fair play to Wilder, he was up-front and honest with Ikpeazu from the off. He spoke to the striker and told him it was nothing personal at all - he praised the striker's attitude at every opportunity - but said if Ikpeazu stayed at Boro chances would be hard to come by.

He wasn't bombed out of the squad under Wilder. In fact, he played eight times, though mainly as a late substitute. He started in the cup at Mansfield and scored a stunner in what proved to be his last start.

Signing strikers was always going to be a priority for Wilder in January and the boss made the rare move of coming into a press conference early in January and listing the players who were available to leave, Ikpeazu being one of them.

Q. Do you think there is a future for him there, given Wilder clearly hasn't taken to him?

DS : I don't think so. It's nothing personal, it's just Ikpeazu doesn't fit the bill in terms of what Wilder is looking for in a striker. Ikpeazu was signed by Neil Warnock, who wanted a powerful frontman to lead the line alone.

And i am hoping since moore has left we will be in for a decent striker next season
collins and this guy can leave for me
davies harris can stay and hugill if he wants.

I feel exactly the same, Uche a massive NO for me and an even bigger NO for James Collins as I said from day one, I could not believe we signed Collins. Aged 32 this year and 27 appearances for Cardiff City , 3 goals.

Davies we can see he has pace and could make it.

Mark Harris a NO from me, had 5 different City managers, over 5 years, 41 appearances for Cardiff, 6 goals.
Perfect for 15mins as a sub if his wages are still very very low.

Hugill, 60-40 in favour, will wait and see his final games for City :thumbright: :bluebird: :bluebird:

For me at least Uche has delivered when asked. The only apprehension I have ishe does not come over as a 90 minute man. If we ca get a good deal I would take him on.

As we are talking strikers here I personally think we are very weak. We have been since the departure of Chopra and Bothroyd but I though we had filled that with the arrival of Moore. Sadly he is going to be a one season wonder for us. I'm not 100% sure about Davies, too lightweight for me, and for Collins well it has not worked out.

This summer I can see us gambling on a lower league striker

Really handy to bring on for last 15-20 mins but at anywhere near that cost in wages he'd be a luxury that we simply can't afford imo. :bluescarf:

That's one more season than Bournemouth have got out of him; and we get £5m rather than having to pay for him to sit (genuinely this time) on the sidelines as his team mates get on without him...again! :laughing6:

I'm surprised at people not wanting to sign Uche for around £750k.

He is unpredictable and you can question whether he could last 90 mins but he is different, his goal per min ratio is pretty high so far and would be an excellent back-up centre forward in my eyes.

That said, I wouldn't want to go into next season with Uche as first choice. He is a good back-up and gives us a different option in some of the "0-0 with 20 mins to go" games that you always get in the Championship.

We need to spend the majority of whatever small budget we may have on our front line. I'm firmly of the opinion that good forwards cost money, the rest of the team can be filled, as we have proved, through careful loan moves and frees. It's possible and I think Morison is a manager who is comfortable in operating within those confines, as January showed.

Ian,

Uche, is very much unpredictable and unreliable if you look at his career.
If he can score 1 goal in every 3 appearances then it’s a yes from me, but his career over the years says NO.

We have missed players the quality of Chopra.

Davies has the pace, scoring hmmmmm?

We need a good quality striker if we want to challenge next season.

I do agree if and I mean if Steve Morison gets any of the Kieffer Moore money, then it has to be spent upfront wisely.

We’ve got 9 games left. If he continues to score and gets 3 or 4 goals off the bench in that time I’d have no issue signing him. As long as he understands his job is an impact sub and he does that job that’s all we need.

Re: Cardiff City face summer scrap if they want to sign

Thu Mar 24, 2022 1:38 pm

i know you posted before saying he was on £30,000 a week, with City paying £10,000. if that's true then sadly no, i don't want him at the club long term, if he was available on a free, at a fraction of them wages then he would make a great impact sub,

Re: Cardiff City face summer scrap if they want to sign

The posts about Uche being unpredictable are right, and I think the opposition have no idea what he is going to do because he himself has no idea what he is going to do half the time. I like him he is definitely only an impact player for me though and a luxury (if you can call him that) we can ill afford. We need the wages put towards players who can play the 90mins and he simply can't. The fans love him as he is a bit of a character and becoming a LFW type cult hero, but that will wear off over time and we will be left with a player who has 20mins in him at best and who isn't coming cheap wages wise.

:thumbright: yes, I'd hope that is something we have learnt over the years.

Mind you, a loan like the Jacks had for Tammy Abraham would do the job too although we would have to stump up for wages. Or a signing of decent Championship quality like Hugill but I think he would be too expensive.

Bottom line is, goals cost money and if that means cutting costs elsewhere in the squad, so be it.

Who say he cannot do 90 minutes we haven't given him a start to see if he can do it.
9 games left city can use those games to give him and some youngster some game time.
I believe that we will bring in a striker and will pay money for him, but not high wages. There is money available. :ayatollah:

He is blowing out of his arse after about 20mins so I can't see it. I may be wrong and he may just be awkward but he doesn't look like he could last 90mins to me. He is better to bring on when the opposition are tired and he can out muscle them.

Roger,

Fair shout on the 90mins.

I would like to see more games with him playing the 90mins.
