Tuesday 15th March 2022

Cardiff City manager Steve Morison this morning spoke to the media ahead of the visit of Stoke City.

Fully fit squad available

How's the squad's fitness? Any concerns?

"We have got a fully fit squad. It’s a nice problem to have."

Steve Morison

STEVE MORISON:

Morison 'hopes agents don't try and ruin' plans

Is it exciting that all the young Welshman want to stay?

"Exactly. We are changing the dynamics of what’s going on.

"We will have a younger group next year and a core group of academy players.

"There are a few more we want to tie down to slightly longer over the next few weeks.

"There are things I want to do. I just hope agents don’t try and ruin it for their own gain and their own benefit.

"It’s not the football club it once was where there is money being thrown around everywhere."

Steve Morison

'We are not here to drift and roll into next season'

With your future sorted, are you looking forward to next season now?

"No, not at all.

"It’s about getting three points, picking up wins.

"We are not here to drift and roll into next season.

"What happens on the pitch isn’t based around what’s going to go on next season.

"We have people here who want to play football.

"I want us to try and win games of football as well. That’s our focus."

Morison targeting mid-table finish

Do you think teams that end seasons strongly tend to start next season strongly?

"It’s all a bit of a myth, that.

"The season isn’t won in August. It’s about being consistent all season.

"There are plenty of teams who started the season like a house on fire who have drifted away into nothing.

"We have had a hell of a lot of games, over 20-odd games. We had to get the club safe and get us winning games of football.

"We have been doing that, win more than we lose.

"I’d like to replicate those results and performances and we can then finish in a comfortable, mid-table position.

"Then the window opens up on June 9 and we will work hard to try and get things in place.

"The worst thing about all that is, you can have things in place, but until people sign those contracts it’s all up in the air.

"But for now, all we are focused on is what is happening on the grass."

Morison hails Smithies

Cardiff boss Morison has praised goalkeeper Alex Smithies by saying he's been "fantastic" since he was appointed.

Smithies has been an ever-present for Morison in league games, with Dillon Phillips taking the gloves in the FA Cup.

Smithies produced another assured display between the sticks against Preston, making a great save to deny Daniel Johnson in the second half.

Morison was delighted for his keeper, with the manager also expressing his approval of Uche Ikpeazu's efforts off the bench.

STEVE MORISON:

“It’s great that he (Smithies) gets his clean sheet," he said.

"He’s been fantastic since I’ve come in. You ask your goalkeeper to make big saves in big moments and he did that. In the same way, their keeper makes a good save from Uche at the death. I’m really pleased for Alex and pleased for the team to keep a clean sheet.

“Uche was due to start the game, but he was ill. From our point of view, it’s weighing up whether he has the impact because he comes off the bench. It’s working out whether, if I started him, would he have the same impact. He did well when he came on; it was a game that suited him. Everyone’s up for consideration, I just try to pick the best team I can."

Smithies himself believes all the signs are pointing to improvements at Cardiff City Stadium. The Bluebirds face Stoke City in the capital on Wednesday night.

“It was a tough game,” he said of the Preston match. “They’re a good team. We’ve come away with a clean sheet and had a couple of chances at the end. It would’ve been good to nick it but probably fair in the end.

“It’s been a very tough schedule and it was put together with us expected to be ready for that.

“We’ve been on a decent run, and we’re definitely showing signs of improvement. Today was a little bit scrappy at times, and we certainly could’ve tied it up at times, but we still had chances at the end to win it. We’re a lot more happy now than we were around Christmas time.

“Wednesday will be another tough game, as every game is in the Championship. We’ve just got to keep grinding.”

Denham 'can relax his mind' after new contract

Oliver Denham has signed a new contract with Cardiff City until June 2024 - what's your reaction?

"He deserves a contract.

"We want to secure the future of Oli and the football club.

"He now can relax his mind rather than thinking about what he will be doing.

"We had an option on him next year anyway, but this is a much better way of working.

"If he builds on his Liverpool performance in pre-season then he has a real opportunity to stake his claim.

"It’s nice these players can grow at the rate they need to with no external factors."

Re: STEVE MORISON:

Mon Mar 14, 2022 3:24 pm

Cardiff City boss Steve Morison says he's keen to focus on the positives after his side's "boring" 0-0 draw at home to Preston North End.

City drew a blank during a drab contest which yielded precious few moments of quality for either side, and Morison admits he was in agreement with his opposite number Ryan Lowe at full-time.

STEVE MORISON:

"It was a 0-0 game," Morison said after the game

"It had 0-0 written all over it from about the first five minutes of the game. You're just hoping you have a moment in the game to win the game and don't give up a goal and we nearly had that.

"It wasn't to be, their manager turns round to me at the end, we both shake each other's hand and go 'that was boring wasn't it'.

"But on the positive, we kept a clean sheet. Another point in the right direction. We would have lost that a few months back. We haven't today.

"I just said to the lads, let's dust ourselves down and go again Monday.

"Hopefully it's more exciting on Wednesday."

Morison had previously expressed the importance of ensuring his side don't take their foot off the gas during the last few months of the season, and insists there were real positives from this result, which sees Cardiff stay in 17th, one point behind bitter rivals Swansea City.

"There's no negatives out there," he continued. "It's two teams that played exactly the same shape, exactly the same amount of shots, exactly the same number of shots on target. They had a few more passes than us.

"They didn't create anything either. It was just one of those games. We had moments, but it's definitely not a time to be worrying about any negatives, you ha

Miles away' from first Stoke game as manager

Your first game against Stoke was a bit of a whirlwind - how far have you come since then?

"Look at the starting lineup. The goals. The fight to come back was great, we showed great character.

"But we’ve come a long way since then.

"We are miles away from where we were then! We have got a different team, a different squad, we’ve not got Kieffer!

"It’s definitely a different place."

Change in style

Has there been a cahnge of style?

"We had a lot more possession early on and we did OK.

"But when we haven’t got the ball, we are in a really good shape. When we have the ball, we try to keep it initially, trying to secure that first or second pass, that’s the difference. We are not so quick to give the ball back.

"But that lends itself to not having as much possession as the other team, but we have more output.

"That helps with the personnel as well. We have wing-backs who can travel with the ball.

"Within that we have seen some young lads flourish as well, Isaak, Rubin, McGuinness.

"It’s been really interesting working it all out, getting to where we are now.

"It’s not how we first initially wanted to play.

"We have to adapt. If someone is better than you you have to work out how to be better than them. Otherwise we’d still be scrapping at the bottom!"

'Not mathematically safe'

What about the turnaround from eight losses in a row?

"It was horrible. I went in at half-time, 2-0 down, had a good conversation and within 30 seconds we were 3-0 down!

"Next thing, it was 3-3. You have to be adaptable all the time. Each game is different.

"You have to have game plans all the time.

"The players are going to take everything on board. It’s been a really positive start to the job.

"We are not mathematically safe, but we are in a much better position.

"Lots of stuff has changed. The media output has changed. Engagement between fans and players.

"We have opened up the training ground to our media team to put more content out.

"We are just trying to make it a better and nicer place to work.

"Everything around that is why we have much better performances. There is more of a togetherness.

"We need to keep at it."

Set for a great battle in mid-table?

'Fine if players want more money in League One or Two'

How is the relationship working with agents?

"You need them. You need them to work with you, but their interest is for the player.

"For me, my conversations with them is to tell them how it is now.

"What happened before isn’t happening anymore!

"I’m really comfortable with all of it.

"If they decide not to buy into it then what will be will be, we will move on to the next one.

"That goes for the people in the building. If they want over and above what I think they deserve then they can go and find their way.

"If you don’t want to be a Championship player with Cardiff because you want to go and play in League One or League Two for more money, that’s fine by me."

STEVE MORISON:

"I’ve got a permanent job now, or as permanent as it can be as a football manager. Stoke was my first game as a manger and we had 23 since then. I’ve gone from standing there at 3-0 down wanting the ground to swallow me up, to take me out of it, to by the end of it feeling amazing. That was the feeling I wanted and the reality is that you only really enjoy it when you win.

"I still get as nervous before every game and you can’t afford to get too high after a win or too low after a defeat because a few days later you have to go again. It is all very real now. We are working towards next year. It is changing every day and you have to be as consistent as possible."
