STEVE MORISON:

QPR - Brave decisions off the bench - feel a bit more liberated since this contract?

Steve Morison: "No, not all. You make a decision and keeping Colwill on felt right. We spoke and we wanted to get Rubin around that deep lyer. I felt they had dropped their level a little bit."

Free week - made the most of it?

Hopefully. We’ll see tomorrow. It’s nice to give the lads some rest that they needed whilst still working on stuff on the training pitch. We've had a good week. Hopefully the game goes the way we want it to tomorrow.

Morison

Targets for the end of the season?

"No. Not really."

"We just want to win as many games as we can. We haven’t spoken about that since we’ve been in the job. We’ve not set the players' targets. We just want to work and get better results. We always talk about performance first and the result will come. We’re doing that with our performances. Over the last 10 games we’ve had more positive results than negative. There’s 10 games left. It would be great if we matched the form of the last 10 games"

"Everyone’s fit. Nelson is back on the grass this week, so it’s too soon for him. But touch wood it’s a clean bill of health. Apart from the long-term injured we’ve got a full squad to pick from."

"A nice problem to have."

STEVE MORISON:

Blank canvas for players to impress?

"Of course. It’s a game of opinions. If you’ve got a contract until next year you’re here. Everyone's got a place. Everyone’s got to fight for a place and people have the opportunity to cement their place in the team."

"When new players come in they have to think ‘that’s my challenge now. That’s who I have to get in front of’. No one’s getting cut away."

STEVE MORISON:

Joe Ledley on Davies and Colwill?

"They’ve played well. If I had a choice and they were just going to go away with Wales, it’s great for them to be a part of it. I’d rather they go away and play. I haven't spoken to the Wales manager, so I don’t know what his thoughts are on those players. Whether he wants to take them for them to be a part of it, or whether he wants them at all."

"Do we want to protect them? Many of them join up with Wales and just don’t do anything. You want to be a part of the Wales squad to go and play. Does that mean I don’t want them to go right now? No, but it has to be managed correctly."

"No, not all. You make a decision and keeping Colwill on felt right. We spoke and we wanted to get Rubin around that deep lyer. I felt they had dropped their level a little bit. I asked the players to be braver in the second half. We did that. Then the sub was a brave decision in terms that it could have backfired. But once we got the first goal our tails were up.

It was a good call and it worked. Once we did it, we celebrated the moment. Now it’s about making the right call for Saturday and go from there. We don’t get carried away with it."

STEVE MORISON:

Preston - looking forward?

"This is the third time we’ve played Preston this year and we want to make it a hat-trick of wins. They’re a good team. We beat QPR who are in the play-offs as well. "

"My main focus is to make sure that it doesn’t become a testimonial and that both teams are at it and we give our fans something to cheer about and come away with three points."

Murphy and Cunningham miss Cardiff return

Former Cardiff City stars Josh Murphy and Greg Cunningham will be absent when their new club Preston head to the Welsh capital this weekend.

Murphy has recently recovered from an injury issue but is prohibited from playing in the game as part of the terms which saw him loaned out by Steve Morison to Preston.

Left-back Cunningham has shaken off a calf problem but has been affected by an Achilles injury, so he too is out.

Preston boss Ryan Lowe said: "Greg, we thought we'd have back this week, but he will probably be another four or five days.

"His calf injury was fine and it's his Achilles. So it's more a precaution - holding him back a couple of days."

Joe Ledley Says Rubin Colwill & Isaak Davies should be playing week in week out.

JOE LEDLEY:

"I think they've done enough," Ledley told the BBC. "It's important for them now to be playing week in, week out and showing the world what they can do.

"It will be interesting to see if Page includes them in his squad.

"I've been covering a lot of Cardiff games and I've been very impressed with the pair of them. It's pleasing to see.

"It's a great identity for Cardiff now to have these youngsters coming through.

"My time supporting the club, you always remember the ones coming through - Robert Earnshaw, James Collins, people like that."

"Then the next generation - Aaron Ramsey, myself, Chris Gunter, Adam Matthews."

"So I think it's vital, the way Cardiff have gone down that route. You can see the fans appreciate that as well."

Cardiff City boss Steve Morison makes transfer admission on Aston Villa star ahead of Preston North End clash

The Bluebirds were keen on signing a striker in the recent January window, and Archer was one of several options Cardiff explored

Friday 11th March 2022

Cardiff City boss Steve Morison has admitted he tried to sign Aston Villa's Cameron Archer in the January window, shortly before the forward completed a loan move to Preston North End.

A striker was very much near the top of the Bluebirds' wishlist in the recent window even before the departure of Kieffer Moore, and Morison admits that the 20-year-old, who is now set to line up against the Bluebirds at Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday, was very much an option on the club's radar.

Archer has since gone on to be a key man for the Lilywhites, netting five goals in 10 games in the Championship since his arrival.

Speaking ahead of City's third clash of the season against Preston, Morison was full of praise for boss Ryan Lowe - and indeed his dealings in the transfer market, admitting that his team made a real attempt to wow Villa into sending Archer to the Welsh capital.

STEVE MORISON:

"Ryan's done great and they've made some good signings," Morison said. "Cameron Archer's a really good signing. Someone we were interested in as well.

"We had a conversation, like we had to do with all the loan players.

'They're footballers, not politicians', Smith on Chelsea's off-field issues"

"We had to put presentations together for all of them and we did that for a couple of players at Aston Villa, and they decided to go to other teams."

"That was it. Not really any different to any conversations we've had with other players."

"He decided to go to Preston and that's about it."

However, this clash is likely to be too soon for Curtis Nelson, who continues to work his way back from a calf injury.

"Everyone’s fit." Morison said. "Nelson is back on the grass this week, so it’s too soon for him. But touch wood it’s a clean bill of health. Apart from the long-term injured we’ve got a full squad to pick from."

That will come as a boost to Morison, who insists there is still plenty to play for over the last few weeks of the season, despite his side seemingly looking destined for the comfort of mid-table.

"We’ve not set the players' targets," he added. "We just want to work and get better results. We always talk about performance first and the result will come. We’re doing that with our performances. Over the last 10 games we’ve had more positive results than negative. There’s 10 games left. It would be great if we matched the form of the last 10 games.

"They're a good team. They beat Bournemouth, who are a good team. We beat QPR who are in the play-offs as well.

"My main focus is to try and make sure it doesn't become a testimonial, and that both teams are at it. We give our fans something to cheer about and we go for it."
