A VIEW FROM THE ARMCHAIR: QPR V CARDIFF CITY

Sat Mar 05, 2022 5:36 pm

Despite the headline, I am busy with DIY today, so the game was on in the background and it was more a listening brief until something exciting happened to grab my viewing attention

I thought we had some half-decent chances in the first-half (with Bluebird favourite David Marshall in the QPR goal making some good stops) but QPR well 'bossed' the game with some excellent passing and posession that was, IMHO, one of the best I've seen this season. The only 'plus' was that possession is something the current Bluebirds are content (rather than happy) to concede and they are resolute in their defensive work, which meant that we limped to a 1-0 half-time deficit rather than being more goals down

I have to say, it was an excellent finish for the sole QPR goal on 38 mins but what made me smile (the only thing) was the QPR commentators saying "QPR really should be easily beating a team in 18th place in the Championship"

Hello! Have you actually watched Cardiff City's progress in the last 10 games...?

HALF-TIME SCORE: QPR 1 - 0 CARDIFF CITY

The second half started in similar fashion and the Bluebirds were stretched again until Steve Morison proved his nouse once again by making a double substitution and the Bluebirds started to get back into the game

This is certainly not the first time Steve Morison has changed the game and it has again worked to our favour!

The equaliser was a little fortuitous but we 100% will take it. A strong Isaak Davies shot rebounded off the bar and over the goal line, despite an excellent attempt from Marshall to draw the teams level at 1-1

What happened next will go down in the book of 'Cardiff City Great Moments' as the Bluebirds won a free kick around 20 yards out and Rubin Colwill struck a superb shot well wide of Marshall and into the top right of the QPR goal to put us ahead in a game we woukd surely have lost under certain previous managers

No matter how hard a clearly shell-shocked QPR side tried, the Bluebirds were now in control of the game and restricted them to a last second fee kick attempt from a similar position to Colwill's. Thankfully, the resulting shot had more place in the MillStad than a football stadium and that was it...!

FINAL SCORE: QPR 1 - 2 CARDIFF CITY
City Scorers: Isaak Davies, Rubin Colwill

Summary

For me, the missing Tommy Doyle apart, this tough game turned on Steve Morison's double substitution and City came away with a brilliant 3 points at a place we don't often do too well. It seems he certainly knows his players and can change his tactics with said players apparently on board

Today's winner was well on a par with Scott Malone's strike some years ago and worthy of winning any game and the Bluebirds would now seemingly be safe from any threat of relegation and able to (partly at least) plan for the future

Overall, a tough game but a superb win that bodes well going forward

Loved the (for me) best chant of the day aimed at Yohann Barbet at the final whistle, "WTF was that...?!" and all that was missing was "You're just a sh*t Rubin Colwill...!" :laughing6:

Very happy with this result and the mettle of both team and manager  :ayatollah: :bluescarf: :bluebird: :notworthy:

Great ‘armchair’ review mate. One thing I would like to see are our possession stats start to creep up. I know we were away to a high flying side, but we now have players capable of keeping the ball and a manager advocating ‘better’ football. Superb result though especially as it was inspired by ‘ our own’ youngsters.

Slight correction chris..... Marshall tried to save the shot but didn't do to well and it looped up over his head and just behind line.... but bigger question is how could you do anything but watch city:D

LOL, it was on in the room, Allan and it didn't take much to stop painting!

Marshall allowed it to loop over his head but he adjusted himself quickly (for a keeper of his age) to make what woukd have been a great second save had the ball not crossed the line :thumbright:

Forgot to say 'Happy Birthday' to both keepers today, as former QPR man Alex Smithies was 32 years of age and former Bluebird David Marshall was 37 years of age

Thought he should have punched the shot out he didnt seem to do one thing or other ...."lucky for us"..... watch a game with swans playing and by time they get ball outside their half the paint would have dried!

I had a listening brief as well today Chris and was a little worried in the final 15 minutes of the first half. But things changed in the 2nd which is great credit to SM and all the players and I felt get one goal and we can win this and what a goal to win it absolutely unstoppable.

In Rubin Colwill we have a player of HUGE potential, and we should remember he is only 19 and he will be inconsistent, but for me there is no way he is going backwards. I think Whitts would have been proud of scoring that goal today and I can't think of a better compliment for the lad.

Agree, Gary; I think the 'issue' a few have with Colwill is they cannot see the bigger picture with him

For me, he is a skilful player, who can change games in an instance in a similar way (if not fashion) to Bluebird legend Peter Whittingham

I don't think he is the type to 'run all day' and that is possibly where he frustrates his manager and unlike today, so often comes off the bench

For me, he is the real deal and we need to treasure him :ayatollah:

Never thought of it before but there are definitely some Whitts resemblances about Young Colwill displays, effortless in making some difficult things look so easy.Game man management is definitely the way forward.
As said above young and still learning and Cities joint top scorer.

I’ve stated this on the other post match thread.
Taking Vaulks off and not replacing him with Colwill allowing the latter to play in the hole and allowing Davies to run QPR ragged won the game.
Vaulks should though never have started - he was as usual ineffective and technically deficient. The midfield is worse by miles with him there.
He cannot be given a new contract.

That qpr commentator ______ London is the most biased I’ve heard in a while if I’ve caught game on Ifollow. Put Cardiff down a few times, the other guy gave a more balanced view to be fair.

For me great as he was sometimes Whitts was a luxury we couldn't always afford in midfield and but for that facet of his game would have plied his trade at a much higher level than us.Colwill seems to be cut from the same cloth at the moment but in Morrison I believe we have the right man to get him more consistant.Like many are saying time is on his side.

Agree, Mike. The one was comedy gold with his put downs; but Welsh capital club had the last laugh... :ayatollah:

Colwill started so how could he replace Vaults.I thought Colwill was playing in the hole.
You missed the bit where Vaults won the ball for the foul on Davies which led to the winner then ?
