And we have Tory MPs standing up in Parliament telling us not to take in any more evacuees!!

The reason the Ukraine are in this position is that they agreed with NATO and Russia to get rid of their nuclear deterrent !!

Makes you embarrassed to be British.

Fair play to them that is brilliant, it's worth noting that Poland is 30% bigger than the UK with a population of 37Million and is next door to Ukraine, many of the refugees will want to stay local to go home and rebuild the Country if they can at the earliest opportunity.

Lets wait and see what happens before slagging off the UK, it may well be that the UK offers to take more evacuees as things develop, this is only the starting point.

They need help now, not when it suits us.

I see what you're saying the UK is helping with money and arms and taking some refugees, and agree they need to review the immigration situation quickly.

Exactly. Suggesting they might like to apply for fruit picking visas as an option when they are mostly traumatised women with kids and seperated from their families - truly despicable sentiments when other countries are doing all they can to accommodate these desperate people. Tory ministers probably think they are coming looking for benefits as that's their usual reason to deny Eastern Europeans.

It's also worth noting that just about all of the Ukranian refugees will return home when/if this crisis is sorted.

Poland have no choice but to take them as they are flooding across their SHARED border.
What are the EU doing? Where's France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Portugal?
Ukraine want to join the EU, so why aren't EU countries doing more to help their future partners?

Why ashamed of being British (you must be Labour, anti-Britain, supporting Russia and anti NATO).
Russia broke the agreement, not Britain or NATO. Again where's the EU to help?

We have done more, helped more and supported more than any other European country (Ukraine itself has said this).

some figures for the OP who states we struggle to look after single mothers in this country.
A single mother over 25 with one child will receive £324.84 personal allowance pcm, £282.50 additionally for their Child. Housing benefit to cover the cost of rent, lets say most council / housing association rent around £100.00 a week thats another £433.33 pcm so we are up to £1040.68 pcm lets not forget free school meals, free school uniform, free dental / optical treatment the list goes on.

This country has the best benefit system in the world for people who likely have never contributed via the tax system, yes maybe its not enough to keep the mobile phone contracts, to buy the designer gear, botox and lip fillers but certainly enough to live off.

Now lets start to take Ukrainian refugees in particular those with family members in this country, oh i see we have already agreed to do this extending the scheme to include parents grandparents and siblings. Well done the UK I'm sure this is only the start of course that's in addition to the £220 million in financial aid we have given.

That would amount to just shy of £12.5k a year (assuming they’re received the max amount). A minimum wage worker earns £18,525 a year for context.

Being on benefits is not a cushy lifestyle full of plasma screen TVs and recreational drugs. As someone who’s been there, trust me, it’s grim. I didn’t have a kid to provide for either.

Great post, I live in Warsaw, Poland and it really can't be underestimated how much support is being offered from here. WE have members of the public on the roads 24 hours a day picking up refugees from the Polish Ukrainian border, talk about stepping up! As you said they are taking as many people as needs shelter and so many are offering up spare rooms, sofas anywhere you can put a mattress. I really wish the UK Government would step up more, it's crazy they were refusing to take any more people over. The Tories really do like to side with whatever the Population Doesn't want.

It's also good to see the financial/arms supports being provided by Poland.

I've been to the Dorohust on the border twice this week to bring people back to Warsaw and it's the most heartbreaking thing I have witnessed in my life. No men at all are have come from Ukraine, it is just woman of all ages and young children. The numbers are only going to increase and I really don't know what is going to happen from here.

Love Life UKRAINE!

A minimum wage worker earns £18.525 before stoppages they do not take home that amount, and they are as the term suggest workers, earning that amount going out to work everyday, are you suggesting that unemployed single mothers should have parity what incentive would there be to work then.
But look this thread is about Ukrainian refugees, i just hate the way people waylay these things to take a pop at our country. We are doing plenty to help both financially, on the military front and in a humanitarian context. I'm sure we will continue to increase our aid in all these areas.

I’m not suggesting they get the same as a min wage worker. I’m just highlighting that being on benefits isn’t an easy lifestyle for lazy people. Despite what tabloids and poverty porn TV shows like to try and portray, benefits don’t give you a huge wad of cash to waste on “designer gear, botox and lip fillers”.

 The country's magic money tree is fine, we are just going to inflate the debt away, Unfortunately in the real world you can not magic up housing.

A lot of the Afghan refugee's (last years cause célèbre) still haven't been housed as there simply isn't enough.

We are going to take our fair share ,but they were saying you can't just go and pick thousands of Ukrainian people up on buses etc until you have things in place like , schooling , accommodation, and can local councils cope with the influx, and who ever comes you have got to make sure they haven't been sent by Putin to poison people like Salisbury, and on top of that can you imagine the uproar if they jumped the queue for hospital treatment in front of your son or daughter etc that have been waiting for two years because of COVID, don't be so quick to criticize there are many problems ,you can't just bring them here and dump them in a field.

The Polish people know what loss is. Pro rata they suffered more than any other country in WW2 as a direct result of being exterminated by the Germans and the Russians.
