Injury/illness update?

It’s a mixed bag. Some new ones, some ones who were ill are slightly better.

We are going to have to address all that tomorrow, early.

We will be all right.

Derby fighting for their lives?

Yeah, 100% and they will be matched with the same attitude.

STEVE MORISON:

"TS WAS AN ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE BEFORE THE FULHAM GAME."

"It's been an absolute nightmare," he added. "It started yesterday after training, a couple of the lads went down.

"I named the squad. Then I woke up this morning, I went to the gym at 8am and I had two players ruled out, Mark Harris and Uche (Ikpeazu).

"I called James Collins up to go on to the bench. Then at about quarter to 11 I was coming in at Rubin (Colwill) calls to say he doesn't feel great but that he wants to give it a go.

"When we turned up to the game, Ryan Wintle and Jordan Hugill were both ill. Hugill does the warm-up, comes in and says, 'I can't give you anything'.

"I'd already made the decision for Collo to start, so we were a sub down. The team changed about three or four times.

"All of that going on, for them to go on and perform like that shows how good we are as a group and how together we are."

STEVE MORISON:

Worst 24 hours as manager on Saturday, are you in same position?

Pretty much the same. It’s a mixed bag, as I said.

It hasn’t just come upon us this time, whereas it came out of nowhere on Friday.

We will be in a slightly different place to what we were on Saturday.

You have to just adopt the attitude of, ‘there’s not a lot you can do about it’.

The analysts have to be on their toes, us as staff, the players.

James Collins went from training with the under-23s on Saturday morning to playing a game of football.

We all need to be ready.

They got through it well on Saturday?

I was really proud of them. I was disappointed we conceded from a set-piece.

We gave a good account of ourselves. But that’s behind us now and we have got to give a good account of ourselves tomorrow night.

Ultimately, we played a really good team and came out with some credit even though we lost.

It’s a happy camp.

Cardiff City 0 Fulham 1

Possession: Cardiff 34% Fulham 66%

Shots: Cardiff 9 Fulham 11

STEVE MORISON:

"I couldn't be prouder of the lads. They were fantastic.”

"We've gone toe to toe with them in our own way, limited them to the third-least amount of shots they've had this season. We've had more shots on goal than them, better chances than them.”

STEVE MORISON:

Derby have had to show character this season?

It’s been incredible, they’ve given themselves every single chance to stay in the league.

He has had a pretty depleted squad at times.

If they didn’t have the deduction they’d be doing well in the league.

But we need to keep them there.

Cardiff boss Steve Morison has defended Perry Ng amid the "pathetic" actions of Fulham's Ivan Cavaleiro on Saturday.

The Cottagers man went down after colliding with the Bluebirds defender, with Morison's opposite number Marco Silva gesturing to the fourth official that Ng had used an elbow in the altercation.

Morison took umbrage with that and spoke his mind post match when asked about the incident.

STEVE MORISON:

"Their manager was kicking off,” said Morison.

“Come on, let’s get it right. I have watched it back 10 times and Perry Ng has brushed him. It’s pathetic.

Tuchel's Kepa gamble misfires as Liverpool lift the Carabao Cup
“It was handbags. We were on the attack on the halfway line and they pulled it back for a player who was in danger, apparently. That decision was just ridiculous.”

Aleksandar Mitrovic's goal was the difference at Cardiff City Stadium as the Bluebirds went down to back-to-back defeats.

STEVE MORISON:

Any talks yet on staying on?

No. Maybe we need to get mathematically safe.

We are just concentrating on our job. It’s not something I worry about.

It’s down to other people. I want the job but it’s down to other people.

STEVE MORISON:

Do you feel like a manager?

The stuff you don’t see as a player is the stuff above your head as a manager.

I’m thoroughly enjoying it. I am definitely enjoying this side of it as much as I thought I would.

The sky is the limit with this job, that’s the best thing.

It’s a good test. Players have always got a lot to say for themselves, I was one, so it’s time for me to do as I said as a player.

John Toshack in hospital, someone you played under for Wales, your thoughts for him?

Our thoughts are with him and his family.

He gave me my debut against Luxembourg. A great man, a great hero for club and country.

It’s a terrible situation, but it shows you how terrible Covid is and it hasn’t gone.

STEVE MORISON:

Still talking to Tan?

Yeah, nothing has changed. We are always in full dialogue, we always talk before and after games.

He has been really enjoying it and has been really positive even after the two losses as well.

He has seen the improvement and how well we have done. It’s great he can see the improvement in wins and defeats.

The conversations have been as they were (in January). There are a few people between me and him who have to come together and make a decision on my future, that’ll be up to them.

He has been great since I came in. I will have a chat with him this afternoon as normal and then again tomorrow.

Have you told him directly you want the job?

We’ve not really had that conversation. I’ve not just said, ‘Oh, by the way, I really want the job!’

He reads the stuff you guys put out and obviously a lot of what you put out is what I’ve said. I’m sure he knows.

STEVE MORISON:

Do you have conversations about what the longer-term future looks like?

I don’t know about the lawsuits, they are all going on.

All we do when we talk, is talk about the plan for the football club and where it’s going to go, which is an extension of what me and my staff have implemented since we come in.

Everyone can see the type of players, environment, slightly different style.

The biggest thing is that if everyone doesn’t buy in it doesn’t work, because you get so many people pulling in different directions.

Everyone is pulling in the same direction with that. Whether it is me or something else, the club is not going to see someone of a completely different ilk going forward.

This is the way the club wants to go. This is the way I’m going to go if it’s me. If it’s someone else it’ll be the same path.

There is definitely a vision and a structure going forward which is really healthy for us as a club.

STEVE MORISON:

Has performances of loan players convinced Prem clubs to send players here next year?

Yeah, 100%. All the conversations we’ve had with the clubs since have been really positive.

We will have gained trust from a lot of them. All the clubs have sent down individual representatives to see how we work behind the scenes.

They have got a complete overview of it. Plus the performances from those players have been excellent as well.

I have no doubt in my mind, if the season stopped tomorrow, they’ll be going back better players.

Would we be able to get any of those players back next year? Probably not, but we might be able to get the next one in line, because they know what we’re doing.

It’s an avenue which, if I was in charge, we would have our core squad and then you have to take the full quota of the five loans to top up that group and help.

You can get a different quality of player that you might not be able to get outright. Wages-wise, you’re able to get someone in who is that good, but it’s as a percentage rather than costing us a fortune.

I think it’s been great. The size, quality and depth of these Premier League squads nowadays, it’s definitely a really good avenue for us.

STEVE MORISON:

Your loanees, had much chance to keep tabs on them?

Yeah, they have been excellent.

I make a couple of the guys, Jenks and Paddy, they have to put a document on my desk after every time they play, telling me how they’ve got on, how they’ve done, minutes they’ve played. If they’ve gone to the game I need a report.

Chanka has gone back to Northampton today, his first training session after his injury.

James Connolly has been, by the looks and sounds of it, excellent, part of a team that’s flown up the league under Joey Barton and he has played every single game.

Kieron Evans’ last game got called off. Gavin Whyte is doing really well at the minute, Ciaron Brown has been in and out, Keenan Patten has started starting games now.

Tom Sang has been in and out, he’s started the last two. We are fully across all of them.

It’ll make them all better players and next season we’ll be able to look at them in a different light because it’ll stand them in good stead.

STEVE MORISON:

Eli King, hopes for him for the future?

I’ve been excited about Eli King since I first walked through the door. He is an excellent player.

He has had a few knocks, but he has really found himself in terms of his size, attributes and quality.

He is an excellent kid, really nice and a top, top professional.

You’ll often see it, everyone will leave and he will be in there picking up all the bottles. He is that type of kid. He makes sure the ground is tidy.

He is a top-drawer pro.

He has been involved because he deserves to be involved. He didn’t know he was starting until I named the team an hour and a half before! I thought he was excellent and I thought he was excellent against Coventry.

That Coventry team was one of the youngest we have put out in the last 10 or 12 years.

He came off because he had cramp! That’s how far he pushed himself.

I’m really pleased with him and he is one who, if I am here, he will be fully a part of what we are doing next year.

And if he is slightly off because of the people we bring in, he could have a really good loan, a bit like Ryan Wintle and come back a different player.

There are plans in place for every one of those young players and it’s just about me or someone else implementing them.

What job has Wayne Rooney done at Cardiff?

He’s done an excellent job. He has had to deal with a hell of a lot.

It’s commendable another young manager has been able to have that opportunity. He has done all they could have hoped for when they were in the position they were in.

Our job is to ruin that!

It would be amazing if they kept them up. A great achievement - as long as we don’t get drawn into it.
