CONGRATULATIONS: ALAN CURTIS, MBE

Former Bluebird player and Swansea stalwart Alan Curtis has been awarded an MBE for services to Welsh football

In December 2020, it was announced that former Swansea star 'Curt' - who also spent three seasons with Cardiff City - had been respected in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List.

And on Tuesday, the 67-year-old - who scored six goals in 35 appearances for Wales between 1976 and 1987 - was presented with his MBE by the Duke of Cambridge at Windsor Castle.

“To finally receive my MBE is a great honour,” said Curtis.

“The overwhelming emotion is one of pride really.

“Nothing would have been possible with the support of my fellow team-mates, staff, supporters and my family over the years and I’m extremely grateful to have had the career I did.

“To be involved in football for 40-odd years, mainly with the Swans and then other clubs I played for too, has been fantastic and I’ve had a wonderful journey.”

Curtis enjoyed a glittering playing career than spanned more than two decades and also included spells with Leeds United, Southampton, Stoke City and Barry Town.

He has held the role of caretaker manager at Swansea on numerous occasions and has long been regarded as one of the club's finest ever servants both on and off the field.

Fabulous footballer, Alan Curtis.
I remember one Friday night match up at Prenton Park, Tranmere in the mid 80's when City beat them 0-1.
I sat in the grandstand alongside a few Tranmere fans I got chatting to, who agreed that Alan was a class above anyone else on the pitch that evening.

Neither man 'hates' us but will defend their home territory; just as we do (noting that Curtis is actually from Pentre, Rhondda)

I guess we all have pre-perceptions; but none are better than personal experience and I congratulate the man for being recognised for his work

Of course, none of us would ever seek to take a rise out of any 'Jack', would we?

I lost total respect for Alan Curtis when I saw him on a video with Leon Britton in a bar in Benidorm singing a anti Cardiff city song about Neil warnock and Cardiff city .I always thought he was one of the better jacks not like trundle and Tate and monk considering he played for us got us a promotion and a welsh cup final win I will never have the same look on him again strangely enough that video doesn’t seem to have gone missing I’m sure that the people who got him his mbe wouldn’t have given it to him if they saw the video

I’ve met him on a few occasions in the 90’s and all I can say is that he was a gentleman, very honest and helpful.

If he’s been presented with an MBE then good on him I’m not going to decry him.

Each and everyone of us have done things in our lives which we regret or try and forget. That does not mean we are idiots, useless or wasters.

I’ve been called all of them for supporting Cardiff City but that’s my choice and mine alone :ayatollah.

When your on your death bed I don’t think anything matters other than being Welsh and loving your family and being loyal to your friends.
