Cardiff City loan man Tom Sang reignites debate with Steve Morison over where his future lies?

Tom Sang is spending the season loan with Scottish side St Johnstone

Cardiff City's Tom Sang is spending the season on loan with St Johnstone.

Sang is spending the second half of the season north of the border with St Johnstone in order to get game-time under his belt.

The 22-year-old has featured twice for his new club so far, with his performance against Hearts at the weekend putting him in among the man-of-the-match conversation, such was his display.

Sang played at right wing-back, a position he clearly favours, but is at odds with where his permanent manager sees his future.

Morison feels the former Manchester United product is better suited to a midfield role, saying before he departed on loan: "I’ve had the conversation with Tom, I personally don’t see him as a wing back.

"I see him as a midfield option.

"That’s where he has got to fight for his place along with the other midfielders. That’s my opinion.

"At the minute, my opinion is that I didn’t see him as direct competition for Perry (Ng), Joel (Bagan) or Ryan Giles when he was here.

"So, he is in the mix with the other five or six centre midfielders. It’s a tough place to be because there’s a lot of good players there."

Those comments put his long-term future at Cardiff in focus, especially in light of what Sang said at the weekend following the 2-1 win over the Edinburgh side.

It's clear he likes to bomb forward from his defensive berth and despite saying he's prepared to play anywhere, his favoured position is obvious.

TOM SANG:

“When we have comfortable possession, I need to help out in attack," he said.

“Their forwards liked to cheat and stay high so that they could counter quickly.

“When the ball was on the opposite side, I had to be a bit deeper and a bit more intelligent about where I put myself.

“It was about noticing when we had strong possession and then I could join in.

“I’ve played all my professional games at Cardiff at right wing-back. As a player, attribute-wise, I think that is where I have the best potential.

“Callum Davidson saw my games last year so he thinks the same as I do.

“But if I need to play centre midfield, I’ll do the same job and will enjoy it just as much."

At this stage of his career, game-time is of paramount importance and even though he's only been with the Scottish outfit for a few weeks, Sang says he is enjoying his time up there.

Playing as much as possible can only be a good thing, for all concerned.

“It was my first game at McDiarmid Park and was a massive win against a team that is right up there in the league," he added.

"It’s massive. I really enjoyed it.

“I loved it. Loved it. I just love getting out there, playing and helping the team get out of this position. That’s what it’s about. I love playing.

“Firstly, I want to try and get the team further up the table.

“On a personal level, I want to get as much experience as I can and play in the big games. I want to play as many games as I can."

One suspects that a conversation will need to be had when Sang returns to the Welsh capital this summer. Should Morison be handed the keys full time at Cardiff City Stadium, something will have to give.

Perry Ng appears to have been shifted into a back three defensive department, which would free-up a spot for Sang at wing-back. The impact Cody Drameh has made since his arrival from Leeds United has been marked, and Morison has already hinted - perhaps more in hope than expectation - that he'd like to keep the loanee beyond this season.

If Sang can keep impressing in his favoured position in Scotland, he may find a home at wing-back in south Wales.

Tom Sang 23 years old in a couple of months, began his career with Bolton Wanderers before signing for Manchester United in 2015 after a successful trial.

In January 2019, Sang joined AFC Fylde on loan for the remainder of the 2018–19 season.

He was released by Manchester United in 2019, subsequently signing for Cardiff City after a trial period.

He made his professional debut in a penalty shootout defeat to Reading in the FA Cup on 4 February 2020.

I must admit that I tend to agree with Morison on Sang, I think he looks more of a midfield player. I'm not sure he's got the pace to compete with Drameh, Doughty or Bagan.

He's one youngster where the jury is out on. He's 23 but I do think he'd be worth a go in the midfield three now that we have Wintle playing a proper holding midfield role.

Sang is certainly good on the ball and looks to have a good range of passing but I'll trust Morison's judgement on this one :thumbright:

Another product of footballs broken system, nearly 23 and only played 30 odd games including subs. You need to be starting games at 20 or max 21, if you are not then you are at the wrong club or level.

There would be not even be a debate over him (on evidence) over Ralls,Wintle or Doyle. You could argue he would be in the mix with King and Bowen who are much younger. We were picking random names when we had Bacuna,Pack and Vaulks (he gets a bad press) starting as we needed a bit of pace or desire, so Sang's name was banded around.

As a wingback it was a toss up with Perry who evidently was never a wing back. He is an "old fashioned" right back or a centre half.

Can't see him with us next season.

Would have thought that a player has a pretty accurate idea what his own best position is? Think Morison is doing a good job but sometimes can be stubborn about things and maybe this is one.

Connelly seems to be doing well at Bristol Rovers has played in every game for them so far and is well regarded by their fans.

Yes James Connelly has fitted in really well there. He is out of contract with us at the end of the season so we will have to wait and see wether he will be with us next season. One player performing brilliantly for them is youngster Eliot Anderson on loan from Newcastle United. He is an attacking midfielder who would be an excellent loan signing for us if Newcastle were still wanting to send him out to another club to further his career.
