Robert Earnshaw's 'Earnie' on Football Book Club podcast

Fri Feb 18, 2022 8:58 am

Hi there! Hope you don't mind me posting this. If it violates any self-promotion rules or anything, please feel free to delete.

I come in peace from Football Book Club podcast - a 5Live/Athletic/Esquire recommended podcast where, every week, we track down and read another obscure footballer's autobiography.

This week we read probably one of the most obscure yet, a book I'm not sure many people knew existed - Robert Earnshaw's 'Earnie: My Life at Cardiff City'. A 103 page autobiography focussed, you guessed it, pretty much entirely on his time at Cardiff City (he mentions West Brom and Norwich for exactly two pages).

The book was written just as Earnie returned to Cardiff in 2012, and although the book's short, we got a long discussion in on Cardiff's rise up the leagues, the crazy days of Sam Hammamm - including making Spencer Prior eat a sheep's testicle in his contract - Bobby Gould wrestling people in training (which apparently he does a lot), dressing room pranks about Leo Fortune-West's small calves, plus, of course, the art of the goal celebration (it being a Robert Earnshaw episode).

If you wanted to relive Robbie's glory days and fancied listening to the episode, you can find it here...

... And on all other podcast platforms. We've read a few more Cardiff-adjacent episodes in the past. Steff Garrero of Socially Distant Sports Bar joined us to read Craig Bellamy's 'Bellers'. Paddy Kenny came on a couple of series ago and he had some great Neil Warnock stories. Plus you'll be happy to hear Garry Monk's book was about the worst book we've ever read.

But also, I'm genuinely interested, did anyone else here have a copy of Earnie's book? It's a real relic in a '99p Quick Reads' series and I've no idea where it was even sold in the first place (we got ours off Amazon Marketplace).

Best of luck for the rest of the season, seems like things have turned around a bit of late. And, if you listen, hope you enjoy the episode!
