STEVE MORISON:

How difficult is it playing in the wind?

I was told I was going to wake up to the end of the world!

That didn’t quite happen.

How is squad looking?

All good!

Alfie came back into training this week, so that’s good.

We lost Max Watters in training yesterday, which was frustrating. So we will see how he is today.

He rolled his ankle and left on crutches and in a boot, hopefully that’s precautionary.

Rubin is back in the squad :thumbright: :thumbright: :bluebird: :bluebird:

Morison

Annoyingly, Max Watters left training in a precautionary boot and on crutches yesterday and is out this weekend

Watters not kicking off?

No, he went for a header with Oli Denham and Oli fell on his ankle.

It’s just life.

I'm definitely not going to go away from the basics and the stuff that's been getting us the points." - Morison

Morison eyeing 40 points

Cardiff City boss Steve Morison believes his side can only begin to relax when they get to the 40-point mark this season.

After four league wins in five, Cardiff have shot themselves up and away from the relegation zone, prompting an air of calm to fall over Cardiff City Stadium, which has not been the case over the last few months.

With 15 games remaining, the Bluebirds have 35 points on the board, but after the match on Tuesday Morison said he wants five more in the bag to consider themselves safe.

STEVE MORISON:

"I think we need to get over 40 points and then start thinking about being," he said.

"We are up another place after Hull lost. Reading against Peterborough, that's got 0-0 written all over it hopefully.

"One thing we can do now is concentrate on ourselves a little bit more and maybe see if we can add a little bit more to our game.

"But I'm definitely not going to go away from the basics and the stuff that's been getting us the points."

Oddly enough, that Reading and Peterborough game did finish a goalless draw on Wednesday night.

STEVE MORISON:

Alfie better than expected?

Yeah, you put the parameters in place and try to hit the earliest timeframe you can.

He settled down quite quickly. He is young so that helps.

He is out on the grass so that helps.

You have these injuries and it looks OK, then you go to strike a ball and he can’t strike a ball.

He can run and all that but couldn’t kick a ball, but he trained yesterday so that’s a plus point.

Bagan has found another level?

Yeah he has been excellent and it’s been really pleasing.

Alfie got injured and Joel took his opportunity. He has been working and learning behind the scenes.

He has taken his opportunity and he’s been excellent.

It’s a great problem to have now. I’ve been asking Joel to do so much but now I have two of them!

That’s a plus.

Atmosphere better, a feel-good factor now?

It’s something I felt was missing. Covid didn’t help - it was a natural disconnect.

I’ve been trying to work on that along with the staff, how do we bring it all closer together?

There is more media content than previously. They’ve got full access to us now and everyone seems closer together.

I fully believe that a happier environment is an easier place to work.

It’s been interesting the last three home games because we’ve given up possession but we’ve been great on the counter.

Winning helps with everything as well!

Playing without the ball, expecting to do that this weekend?

It’s interesting, Blackpool. They play a 4-4-2, not many teams do that now.

They’ve got their way of playing. We’ll work on what we are going to do.

The weather might play a part if the wind keeps up!

What we then do, once we get the team sheet, is have our final meeting and see what happens then.

I’m sure in every game you will see a distinct idea in what we do.

How difficult is it playing in the wind?

I was told I was going to wake up to the end of the world!

That didn’t quite happen.

The stadium is enclosed, it is what it is, the same for both teams.

It won’t be like Peterborough and Reading the other night, that stadium is a lot more open.

That’s the worst factor in football. Wind is the only thing that ruins everything, training, matches.

We will deal with it accordingly.

The main thing is that it sorts itself out and everyone gets to the stadium safe and sound.

STEVE MORISON:

Your conversation with Watters?

Yeah it was brilliant! That’s what is frustrating about it.

We went in as a staff. I had my sports performance coach come in on it as well to come in at a different angle.

We spoke about how he was feeling about the situation.

I respect everyone’s opinion. My eyes were my opinion on Tuesday.

Then you deal with facts and that’s what it all boils down to. Then there’s no grey areas, it’s black and white.

Once we started off the conversation, it ended in a completely different way.

It was brilliant. He would have been involved this weekend.

Unless I get told something different then he won’t be available.

STEVE MORISON:

Re: Mark Harris

"It was a great finish, he's cut in and taken it so quickly," Morison said when dissecting the Welshman's goal. "Funnily enough, if you'd watched training yesterday, he did that yesterday. He was like a man possessed.

"Literally everything he touched went into the back of the net.

"It wasn't a surprise when he did it, but it's nice to see."

Harris is just one of several forwards now in the building, and says the level of competition within the squad is helping to push everyone to be better on the training ground.

“There’s a lot of competition up top for a place in the side, so you can’t take your foot off the pedal," Harris said. "You’ve got to show what you can do every day in training, then taking the opportunity when you get it with both hands.

“It’s a group of good lads that we’ve got in the squad, including those who came in last month. We’re all pushing each other on in training and on the pitch, it’s healthy for us and good for the team.

“I played Saturday and wanted to keep going into as many games as possible. I got my head down and kept training as hard as I could, which hopefully I can keep taking into the games.”

James Collins, Mark Harris, Isaak Davies, Jordon Hugill, Uche Ikpeazu and Max Watters.

'Just wasn't good enough' -

Cardiff City boss Steve Morison's blunt verdict on Max Watters substitution

The Bluebirds manager took off the striker in the first half but said he was vindicated in his decision

Cardiff City manager Steve Morison admitted he substituted Max Watters in the first half because the striker simply "wasn't good enough" in the clash against Coventry City.

Watters was visibly confused and disappointed by the call, but Cardiff's improved performance from that point on served to prove that the change in personnel was needed.

STEVE MORISON:

"I've just got to use my words correctly this time or I will get annihilated," Morison began, referencing the time he used the word "hindrance" to describe an Isaak Davies performance back in December.

"He just wasn't good enough.

"Is he upset? Yes. Do I want him to be upset? Yes. Does he need to realise what it takes to be a Championship striker? Yes. Will we go through it with him and talk about it again? Yes.

"You can't play up front in this team, any team in the Championship, and not have a physical edge to your game. The ball can't keep coming back.

"Within all that, he could have had two goals. He could have scored a header in the first minute, I thought it was a goal as soon as it went to him. Then when he goes through, I'd already planned to take him off, but then I was like 'Oh what am I going to do now, he is going to score!' Because he is a goalscorer.

"But I wanted to rest players. I got away with resting Rallsy (Joe Ralls) for 90 minutes, Tommy (Doyle) for a good 60 minutes, who has never experienced this level of football on a continues path. I wanted to rest Jordan (Hugill) for as much of the game as I could.

"But I think you could see the difference as soon as Jordan come on."

Watters stayed on the bench at half time when the team went down the tunnel, clearly still reeling by the decision.

But Morison said now it is about the reaction of the player and how he bounces back from the early substitution.

"It's not a big deal, it is what it is," he added.

"You have two choices in life. You either suck it up, get on with it and get better and make me not do it again, or you don't. Steve Morison said he didn't want Watters to be a target-man, of sorts, he said that at this level of football the forward must learn to add physicality to his game.

"Don't get me wrong, I wasn't asking Max to be a Jordan Hugill. I was asking him to be a runner, to be a threat and be a handful to play against," Morison said.

"But you have to have a little bit of that (edge). Their guy (Viktor Gyokeres) isn't a Jordan Hugill, but he doesn't make it easy to let opposition just knock balls down and start a counter attack again.

"It's a learning curve for me and for him.

"Now I look a genius because I did it and it worked. I just felt something and wanted to do it, so I did it.

"Is it nice to do? No. But sometimes you've just got to do what you feel is right."

Bothroyd on Watters sub and Morison

Ex Cardiff City player Jay Bothroyd says he likes the choice of Steve Morison as Bluebirds boss and praised Max Watters for his reaction after his early substitution on Tuesday.

Morison has been appointed until the end of the season and Bothroyd praised the appointment, believing that, with a good coaching staff, the team can progress on the short-term games next season.

"I like the choice," Bothroyd said on Sky Sports News on Friday morning. "He has been a player in the Championship for a lot of his career.

"We don't know if he's going to be the right choice (long term). If we look at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Man United, he came in and was fantastic, won loads of games, they gave him the job and then things went bad.

"Steve Morison has got a good coaching staff around him, he is getting results, he knows what it means to Cardiff fans and hopefully that can continue.

"If Cardiff can finish mid-table that'll be a positive season for them and they can grow next year."

It comes after the 2-0 home win over Coventry City on Tuesday night thanks to goals from Joel Bagan and Mark Harris.

Bothroyd said it was yet another indicator that there are better things to come.

"It was massive," he said of the result. "Getting back-to-back wins at home was massive.

"Since Steve Morison came in and brought Mark Hudson in, you can look at Cardiff and see some positives. Step by step we are seeing certain signs there is light at the end of the tunnel.

"The game against Liverpool, they played really well and fought until the end. That's what a manager and fans want to see."

The talking point after that match centred around Watters' 37th-minute substitution, before the striker sat in the stands during the half-time break.

Bothroyd himself has previous in that department. During a youth team final at Arsenal, he threw his shirt at the dugout before moving to Coventry a couple of months later. The striker praised Watters for not reacting in such a way.

JAY BOTHROYD:

"The way Max handled it was fantastic," Bothroyd said. "He was fuming he was dragged before half-time.

"With Steve, he doesn't have the luxury of time, he needs results right now, he doesn't know if he'll be in the job next season. He needs performances.

"With me, I was young, hot headed, my attitude wasn't great when I was young. Max showed a fantastic attitude. He didn't react or do anything that would be brought into disrepute, club-wise."

Mark Harris said he was learning a lot - more competitive, clarity?

That’s what you want.

Alignment brings clarity. Misalignment brings chaos. We’ve had enough chaos.

We all want to be going in the same direction.

There’s no surprise there has been an upturn in form from the attacking players with more of them in the building.

Same with Joel and Alfie Doughty.

The midfield players, Will Vaulks comes in and puts in an excellent performance because he’s worried Joe Ralls might come back in.

We haven’t had that and this is what a squad should look like.

It’s a winning squad at the moment.

Culture you’re creating, more positive, more rounded, you happy with the culture?

Yeah it’s brilliant! It can always be better.

As soon as I came in it was one person I wanted, a performance coach or psychologist to spark conversations, challenge the staff on the meetings. That’s all about the culture.

I’d like to get to a culture one day where I can just name a squad and not have to speak to individuals or explain anything.

Tactics aside, you look at Jurgen Klopp, the subs he has and how he keeps that whole group winning.

It’s all about the group and the way they live and handle themselves. It’s a better place than it was.

Steve Sallis is the performance coach. He is someone I knew from Millwall.

He has been in a couple of times every few weeks for the players and staff, whatever support we need. He’s there to create a clear mind and a clear way of working at the club.

It’s definitely helped.

Re: BREAKING STEVE MORISON: ' FRIDAY 18TH FEBRUARY 2022 '

Fri Feb 18, 2022 10:55 am

Steve Morison is pleased with the positive talks he held with striker Max Watters following the player's early substitution during the win over Coventry City.

Watters was taken off for Jordan Hugill after 37 minutes following a laboured start to the match on Tuesday night, which preceded the young forward remaining in his seat in the stands at half-time rather than head down the tunnel with his team-mates.

Morison was candid in his post-match assessment, stating that Watters' performance "just wasn't good enough", which prompted a reaction from pundits and fans alike.

However, Morison was confident that, given the chance to sit down with the 22-year-old, he would be able to highlight what went wrong and better the player for it.

Watters, unfortunately, fell on his ankle in training on Thursday after challenging for a header with young defender Oliver Denham. He left training on crutches and in a boot, but Morison hopes it is only precautionary.

He won't be involved this weekend, which has irked Morison because he was happy that he had coaxed a positive reaction from the striker following their clear-the-air talks.

STEVE MORISON:

"It was absolutely brilliant! That’s what is frustrating about it, because it went really well," Morison said of the talks and subsequent injury.

"We went in as a staff. I had my sports performance coach, who I've brought in, come in on it as well to come in at a different angle.

"We spoke about how he was feeling about the situation.

"I respect everyone’s opinion. My eyes were my opinion on Tuesday. Then you go back through it, look at everything and deal with facts and that’s what it all boils down to. Then there’s no grey areas, it’s black and white.

"Once we started off the conversation, we ended the conversation in a completely different way. It was brilliant. He would have been involved this weekend.

"Unless I get told something different when I go into training a bit later then he won’t be available."

Morison has worked hard to create a better, winning environment at Cardiff City since he came in.

He cited his directive to improve media output and bring fans back closer to the team after the lull we saw with Covid-19. He wanted to mend the disconnect that way but also looked internally.

When he was appointed as first-team manager, one of the first things he asked for was to be able to bring in sports performance coach Steve Sallis.

Morison knows Sallis from his Millwall days, but the performance coach is probably best known for his work in helping out former Bluebird Jonny Williams in Netflix's Sunderland 'Till I Die documentary series.

Morison believes that now, there is a better culture and environment within the club than there was before he took the reins.

"As soon as I came, there was one thing I wanted which was a performance coach or psychologist to come in to work with the mindset, to spark conversations I can't have, to get to know people, to challenge the staff on our meetings and how we do things. That’s all about the culture. You need to have a more open culture," he added.

"I’d like to get to a culture one day where I can just name a squad and not have to speak to individuals unless you really need to. We are just trying got pick the best XI and the best subs to win the game.

"Tactics aside, you look at Jurgen Klopp, the subs he has and how he keeps that whole group winning.

"It’s all about the group and the way they live and handle themselves. It’s a better place than it was."

Steve Morison makes the point that time is not on his side to sit idly by and let minutes or games go by. He must be ruthless and decisive.

Says he is treating the players just as he would in the U23s, but only there are cameras and press now!

I absolutely loved Steve Morison's press conference this morning and anyone who is less than impressed with him and how he has turned both the culture and expectations of this club around is missing a whole lot of positive change

When he speaks, I don't see any breakdowns in relationships, I don't see any 'politically correct' answers, I don't see any hiding from the truth. Refreshingly, Steve Morison says it how it is and that is (for me) to be commended

He knows his squad, he knows his team, he knows how to get a positive reaction (and result) by creating healthy competition for places

Some of our current squad, albeit it some are loanees or nearing the end of their contracts, are destined for better things and are currentlty showcasing their potential

If we continue in current form, who is to say we might not convince at least some of these to stay and be part of the 'new' Cardiff City FC that I (and others I speak to) am beginning to think are the blue(bird)print for a positive and successful future at our beloved club
