'Off you pop!' Liverpool legend takes extraordinary swipe at Cardiff City fans after Anfield clash


The Bluebirds fans were in full voice at Anfield but one former Reds player and ex Newport County player said he was unimpressed by them

Despite a commanding performance from the English giants and a 3-1 defeat, Cardiff fans certainly enjoyed their trip up to Merseyside and backed their team throughout.

However, former Reds and Republic of Ireland forward Aldridge, who began his career with Newport, has bizarrely said he was unimpressed by the travelling Welsh contingent at the weekend.


"Cardiff brought about 8,000 fans to Anfield. They got a lucky draw. They enjoyed the day out but their fans didn’t impress me," Aldridge wrote in his Liverpool Echo column.




"The likes of Shrewsbury, Leicester, and now Cardiff - some of the things that we had to endure - they don’t sing about their own team half of the time.

"But they’ve had a day out, had a bit of a jolly and got a goal. I thought they’d won the whole game the way they celebrated it.

"I’ve noticed that the away fans this season seem to have gone a lot more volatile.

"You used to get an atmosphere like that in the old days of the Kop when it was all standing.

"But all of a sudden the away fans are coming and standing and they’re definitely more volatile than they were before.

"In any case, we got the result and their goal didn’t matter because it was a cup game.”

"The Cardiff fans have had a good day out in one of the best stadiums in the world. They’ve made a few bob for the club, now off you pop!"

Best stadium in the world? Hmmm. I'd expect better for their standing in World football to be fair.

And the way he dismisses our atmosphere, sour grapes and jealousy to me. Is he saying he wouldn't swap the fans on the kop on Sunday for those in the 80s... yeah, Whatever!

I wasn't at the match but from what I observed on TV was Cardiff fans enjoying a great day out watching our young team give 100% and the Liverpool fans sat looking miserable other than when they scored.

One of the best stadiums in the world?????????????????????? Has he even seen a newer stadium like spurs new one or the sofi stadium in LA to name just 2. Anfield isn't even in the top 100 as one of the best stadiums in the world. What it does have which the newer ones don't is a great history.

Good day out in the Insole that was.. when the Cup was a big day out. Aldridge, fair play was an excellent player, had to be to play in that side.
