INJURY UPDATE: "I WILL DISCUSS SEAN MORRISON WITH BOARD"

Mon Feb 07, 2022 1:45 pm

Steve Morison says he will discuss Sean Morrison's future with Cardiff City's board of directors after the centre-back was ruled out for nine months.

Centre-back Morrison, 31, sees his Cardiff contract expire at the end of the season.

The Bluebirds captain suffered a serious knee injury during last Wednesday's win at Barnsley.

STEVE MORISON:

"It's a nine-month injury and we will have to assess things as we go along," said Cardiff boss Morison.

"I am sure there will be a conversation at some point with the board about what we do because obviously he has been a big servant for the football club."

Morrison has made almost 300 appearances since joining Cardiff from Reading in 2014.

He was named player of the year as they won promotion to the Premier League in 2017-18 and was a regular in the top flight when fit.

Morrison was making a 19th appearance of this campaign when he was forced off after just 11 minutes with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

In Morrison's absence, Cardiff academy product Oliver Denham made his first senior start in Sunday's FA Cup defeat at Liverpool.

Former under-23 coach Morison described the teenager's performance at Anfield as "excellent".

"Ollie Denham has come through that game and he looked like a Rolls Royce - he's cruised it," Morison said.

"He isn't going to have much tougher opponents than he has had today. He has now put himself right in the mix with the other defenders going forward."

Not looking that good for Sean Morison, In a similar position to Joe Bennet last year.

We did disclose that we offered Joe a contract, he chose not to sign it, whereas not sure the same can be said for Sean

I would like to believe we would have offered him a new contract but at a revised rate due to his age and current situation in football.

Martin,

I would be absolutely stunned if we keep Morrison, with our track record on players.

Imo its a long way back for morrison
by that time i am sure we will have bedded someone else in
and he is going to be a tad slower again and will he have the appetite?

He has a wealth of experiance but i am sure we will have a regular in his position by then
a bit like when bamba was out for a long spell and could'nt get back in the side
But if he still good enough he will and i don't mind if he does or does'nt play for us again
Right at this moment though i wish he was still in the team we looked so much better
particulary against forrest we looked really good at the back organised and steady.

I think we at least need to get him fixed up and fit again - whether he signs a new contract or not. See how he gets on then if it doesnt work out he'll probably have to drop down a league.

If he gets fit by next season they'll be more than enough championship clubs willing to sign him.

I hope he recovers and goes on to play for us again.

From a business perspective... Less clubs will be interested, drives his wages down, hopefully stays 'affordable' for us.

No room for sentiment ,I think hes played his last game for us ,he's on q big wage and let's be honest this is a bad injury ,he might never be the same player, great servant but time to move on from his and bring in a fresh youngster like when we brought mcguiness in forbamba .

I know unbelievable, but you can’t even compare.

Of course you can’t offer a contract until City can see Morrison will get better.

Tony, when I think about it, how the hell can you compare Morrison with Vassell??

Hes under contract its not like we could stop paying him .I very much doubt he will be getting another contract from us .

We have a duty of care (to get him back to full fitness) even when his contract is over . Like we did with Joe Bennet.
As far as a new contract, a year on a much lower wage , the same that was offered to JB , may be offered to SM .

His contract is up at the end of June.

I can’t see him getting a new contract with this injury, he would have to drop his wages considerably to even
get a sniff of one. Coupled with his age and possibly further injuries he will probably move on.

The club have been caught out with older or injured players and they are going to move away from getting caught again. Sentiment doesn’t come into it.

If Reading get relegated it wouldn’t surprise me that he’d go back there!

Joe Bennett is still not fully fit and has only played in 2 Cup games for Wigan so financially it doesn’t make any to offer Sean a contract unless it’s subject to fitness!
