BREAKING: MORRISON OUT FOR THE SEASON AND DOUGHTY IS OUT FOR

Sat Feb 05, 2022 11:02 am

UPDATED:

Cardiff's worst fears confirmed. Been told this morning Sean Morrison (ACL) is out for the season and Alfie Doughty (ankle ligaments) he is out for up to 6 weeks.

Horrible news. Morrison's contract is up in the summer, of course.

Cardiff City captain Sean Morrison's season is over and Alfie Is out for up to six weeks.

Cardiff City duo Sean Morrison and Alfie Doughty are out for the season after the injuries they sustained at Barnsley, .

Saturday 4th February 2021

Bluebirds skipper Morrison was helped off the pitch just minutes into the game on Wednesday, while Doughty was the victim of an utter horror challenge from Tykes skipper Mads Andersen in the second half.

Cardiff manager Steve Morison said he was not hopeful about the outcome of the scans and his worst fears have been realised.

It can be revealed that Morrison has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), which typically has a return-to-play prognosis of around nine months.

Given Morrison's contract is up at the end of the season, unless he signs a new deal he could have played his final game in a Bluebirds shirt.

For Doughty, who has been at the club less than a week following his deadline-day loan move from Stoke City, the verdict is ever-so-slightly better.

The left wing-back had looked bright in his two outings against Nottingham Forest and Barnsley, before Andersen's reckless challenge effectively ended his season.

"That was an awful tackle (on Doughty) and now we could have lost two very important players, so that's really, really frustrating," Morison said after the Barnsley match.

"That's why there was so much passion at the end, because that was a really naughty tackle."

It is a cruel blow for the 22-year-old who was excited about the prospect of getting minutes under his belt for the Bluebirds over the coming months.

But the damage sustained to his ankle ligaments means he will be out for anywhere between four and six months.

Doughty was signed as wing-back cover after Cardiff were left in the dark over whether Ryan Giles would be permitted to return from Wolves.

It likely means Joel Bagan will now have to take that wing-back berth, with Perry Ng now probably having to fill the void left by Morrison in the heart of defence.

It will be a body blow for Morrison, who has suffered a number injuries and setbacks this season. But just when Cardiff need their captain to front up for the relegation fight, his season has been curtailed.

Devastating news for both men and each will have had their own reasons for wanting tonplay on this season

Whether Morrison is afforded the opportunity to play again for Cardiff remains up in the air.

As things stand no fewer than 10 senior Cardiff players see their contracts expire in June, Morrison among them.

There are swathes of Bluebirds fans who no doubt will want to see the skipper offered a new deal, given his years of stellar service to the club and the abundance of experienced heads which are set for the exit door this summer.

For me, it is important to keep Sean Morrison as the steadying hand on and off the pitch next season and it would be very timely to offer him a new contract, subject to regaining his fitness

That's two big losses Chris, especially Moz who had come back into the fold and made an immediate difference to our defensive problems. Doughty was impressive v Forest and is another real loss.

I would love nothing more than the club to find cash quick so we can renew Mozza's contract and Ralls
I know recently i read that you dont have the money to renew the contracts for Ralls so it is so sad for us fans
and for Morrison's career because for everything he did for us he will never wanted his career to end like this and
I would like to thank him because he was huge for our club and would like to wish him all the best for the rest of his career/life. Mozza will forever be a bluebird legend at our great club.

As for Doughty i mean how bad of luck can we get this player was looking good for us and now he got injured. It's such a shame really because im sure Barnsley went out to injure our players and delay the game to get points. I would like to thank him for all he has done I know he only had a few games with us but thanks to him we are back to winning ways so thanks for everything Doughty.

Trying to look at this from a ‘glass half full’ perspective… Will this potentially limit the number of suitors (and contract offers) that Morrison may have next season?

It’s got a terrible sense of Joe Bennett deja vu .

Sam I read we didn’t have any money for any signings in January. 5 signings later shows don’t believe everything you read.

So Barnsley succeeded in what they set out to do and weaken a relegation competitors squad.

I fear we have seen the last of Morrison

I remember the club saying that Bennett was the best LB in the league and then releasing him. That was a shock so I won't be as shocked if the same thing happens here

Awful for the players, especially Morrison due to the nature of his injury and contract situation.

Morison has to now go back to square one with his defence.

Ng has been poor at LB, Bagan likewise so what can he do?

Anyone got any ideas?

Morrison will be a loss, been a massive player for us. I'll be surprised if we see him play for us again.

However, we do have a more than able replacement in Aden Flint.

Very worried about not having Doughty for six weeks though. I don't think Bagan is good enough. I can't see Ng playing there either as he is now an important part of our central defensive three along with Flint and McGuinness.

I also think Nelson would be good with pace around him
