Oakwell is perhaps the worse ground in the league for me. The away stand you are guaranteed to get wet if it rains although it has a massive roof over it. Always check the weather when you go there.
There was an air of confidence in the Concourse before KO but that soon evaporated after 5 minutes of the start. Barnsley created a couple of half chances in that period, perhaps should have scored from one. Barnsley attacked the away end goal and you could feel the change in atmosphere from the Cardiff support. We sang for the full 90 minutes but you could hear the sounds of disgruntlement form us. The guys behind me claimed this was Coventry all over again. They were right as Barnsley basically bullied us all over the park. They just seemed to have more players than us and we felt lucky to go in at HT still level. The Barnsley fans applauded their team off while a few Cardiff booed at the halt time whistle.
The Concourse at halt time was a chamber of disbelief with the girls behind the counters being slower to serve us as was our defence tracking the Barnsley attack. It must have been the first time in many seasons I got back to my seat after the 2nd half kicked off.
We seemed to get back in the game but Barnsley were still bullying us when we got somewhere. It was hoofball from us, just like the old days and I heard people around saying they will take a 0-0 now. Fortunately Barnsley look like they had run out of ideas up front and I put that down to my MOTM Adam Flint who had our defence well organised. They never really threatened Smithie but you felt we would do something stupid to give them a goal. As we thought that Smithie then messed up a back pass that went out for the corner. We were beginning to think this was it.
Before the Smithie howler we all felt we should have had a penalty. A lunging tackle of Doughty right in front of the away fans and inside the area resulted in no foul and no card. That resulted in bringing on Ikpeazu for his debut I would imagine he will never forget. First impressions were he was not the skilful type but would go through brick walls. Well we soon got a fistful of that from where we watch.
it was another hoofball clearance from Flint that reached Ikpeaszu half way inside the Barnsley half. We watch as 2 Barnsley defenders homed in on him where he just pushed them aside. Now these 2 defenders had bullied us all game but this one instance was a typical case of the Bullies being bullied. We had the perfect view of this and was amazes he was still standing to slot the ball pass their keeper. The jubilations as the ball trickled into the net must have been felt back in Cardiff. The celebrations of Ikpeazu and a number of fans at the wall of the stand resulted in every steward being called into duty. Its one of those moments we football fans live for.
We all wanted the whistle to blow for FT but we had 20 minutes to go. Barnsley struggled to get back in the game and we started to look comfortable where we nearly took a 2-0 lead from an ambitious volley from Vaulks just outside the area. It was only in injury time did Barnsley throw everything at us. This was all happening at the other end of the pitch where they managed to create a couple of chances. They did manage to put the ball in the net but us away fans saw the linesman flag go up before the ball hit the net. We were telling the Barnsley fans to sit down before they realised they might have scored. Poor people they must be a frustrated race up there the way it went tonight and for that the whole of the season as well.
Full time came and you could feel the elation from us all. It was a scrappy win and we all knew it. As we prepared to cheer the team off the pitch, that would be right in front of us we saw a number of our players race towards the tunnel. This was different we all thought and started to wonder what was going on. Next thing I saw was 2 stewards escorting what look like an official from the tunnel and into a waiting police van. As I watch this happen there was a load of us at the wall of the stand celebrating with those players who did not get involved in that incident. The Barnsley players look totally devastated and I felt sorry for them but not for long.
A great night because we scraped a win but we will need to play a lot better than that if we wont to collect those points to make us safe.

Strange game, looked like we played not to lose rather then try and win the game. Its looking harder to get clear chances vs Cardiff now, but at the end we took the 3 points.
Before we lose that game 1 nil or draw at best. Great win a 6 pointer really, at this end of the table ill take 3 point any how, but its deffo a stark contrast to the Forest game

Good points.
I’ll be interested to see how we do v Peterborough as playing not to lose v them could have more dangerous consequences than last night imo.

Good read there, Ian; and some great points made

Good match report. Would have settled for a draw at half time and it’s all we deserved. Thought the service to Hugill and Watters was poor. We missed Ralls badly Vaulks gives us very little going forward and Wintle is a defensive midfielder too. Fitting we won it through a big lump out muscling the opposition.
Barnsley is weird been there at least twice and can’t remember a thing about the place.
