Mark Hudson and our defence

Sat Jan 22, 2022 4:45 pm

Absolutely love Mark Hudson but the defence has been an absolute shambles since he came in and god knows it was bad enough before!

Not sure I can remember Hudson ever playing as one of 3 centre backs during his time with us so perhaps he's struggling with the set up Morison seems insistent on playing despite the number of goals being leaked.

The defence was awful today - Flint and Nelson looked like they would struggle in League 1, McGuiness looked clueless, the Perry NG who initially did so well has been replaced by his useless twin brother and Drameh was twice bullied and outmuscled by their big centre forward, once for their third goal and again late on when he hit the post.

Not long ago our defence was the least of our concerns but now it seems even worse than our midfield which is really saying something.

Time for Hudson to start earning his money.

We keep almost everyone back. Get hit by a soft goal and then lack the bodies to attack more and create decent chances. Then in tbr last 5 we take a defender off and have a go. Bit late in the game for that.

We also have a leader and an organiser sat on tbr bench. A guy proven at this level and has given his all for the team to pop up with vital blocks, tackles and even goals.

If we had top class premier league defenders who can do everything then fine. We don’t. We need more balance.

This. Moz needs back in. Skipper and a back 4. He's an organiser for all he lacks in pace.

Exactly. And we CAN account for his lack of pace. We can’t account for the fact we need 3 defenders comfortable on the ball to attack as well as as they defend.

Mcguiness and Morrison have height mettle plus mcguiness has pace.

We don’t have a left back but ng can play there for now.

Exactly. And the allowances made mean for an extra player elsewhere.

Agree to a certain extent but Hudson was brought in to sort the defence I presume. Should have been earning his money from day 1.

Can't see what difference he has made.

He's a first team coach. Yes he was a defender. But no one said defensive coach.

He should shoulder some of the responsibility. But to me it's all down to the formation and mindset. That buck falls with the no 1.

As he spent his whole career as a defender logic would tend to suggest that he's been brought in to coach the defenders surely?

Mind you, if he's actually coaching the forwards that might explain a few things!

Why has'nt hudson told morrison to scrap a 5 man defence or does he agree with it

i though when he came in things would change but i really cannot see any change at all on our performances at the back

if anything there getting worse.

If we stay with a back 5 much longer it will take us down and Morrison will have no one left to blame but himself

You can only work with what you have got! Having looked back at the match Saturday Flint had a nightmare, no coach can compensate for missing tackles and generally players going to sleep. For a player of Flint's experience he was dreadful :banghead:
