Two decades of bad signings not just recently

Fri Dec 31, 2021 10:25 am

People talk about the transfer committee but us shitting away money isn’t a new thing. In fact after the way Malky and Ole blew a lot of money no wonder a committee was formed. Certainly lately signings have been better than further back albeit less of them and more trust in the youth. As Sven says, an explanation as to why would be nice.

Anyway here are some of the ‘diamonds’ we have signed. There’s actually a gap where we signed some class for cheap. Dave Jones’ era. This was always when we barely had a pot to piss in.

Of course there were good signings made too around the below dross but I’m just showing that no one covers themselves in glory.

2000-01
David Hughes 630k
Gavin Gordon 360k

2001-02
Spencer Prior 900k

2002-03
Chris Barker 810k

2003-04
Alan Lee 1 million

Two year gap now

2006-07
Warren Feeney 100k
Jason Byrne 100k

2007-08
Fowler, JFH and Sinclair and their wages caused us to lose Ledley

2008-09
Skint again

2009-10
Chopra 4 million (2nd time was not the charm)
Gerrard 400k
Taiwo 200k

2010-11
Skint

2011-12
Kenny Miller 900k

2012-13
Kim Bo 2.8 million
Nicky Maynard 2.8 million
Eyeing Velikonja 1.8 million

2013-14
Andreas Cornelius 8 million
Peter Odemwingie 2.6 million
Theophile Catherine 2.25 million
John Brayford 1.5 million

2014-15
Adam Le Fondre 2.8 million
Adeyemi 1.1 million
Doyle 900k

2015-16
Cutbacks

2016-17
Lex Immers 2 million

2017-18
Gary Madine 6 million
Lee Tomlin 2 million
Danny Ward 1.5 million
Omar Bogle 700k

2018-19
Bacuna 3 million
Cunningham 3 million

2019-20
Glatzel 5 million
Vassell 1 million

Welcome any thoughts on those.

13/14 and 15/16 stand out for me as particularly bad. Together with the Madine years.

I think a number of the players you quoted have been good value for money, more however have not, and have simply tanked.

15/16 was a good year. We didn’t waste any money on signings.

Who on my list was good value?

When youbadd in wages , signing on fees & bonuses, people wonder "where did the money go"????? Look at just bacuna! How much in fee & wages has he cost us alone?? But its all the committees fault, especially msnagers paying infated prices for "unknowns" who the said managers had been "chasing" bacuna, madine, vassel, glatzel, Cornelius theres roughly 25m plus big wages, Cornelius on 40k a week, glatzel a reprtedc24k? Bacuna the same! Massive money pissed away, and in my eyes some dodgy dealings afoot to boot!!

Don't think Barker should be on that list never let us down, Kenny Miller done a job for a season and I thought KTC was half decent and think we sold him for more than we paid.

Agree when you look at that list we've wasted a lot of money David Hughes and Gavin Gordon crazy fees almost 20 yrs ago

Barker was very much someone I was unsure about. It was more the fee as it was quite high for the time. Happy to be corrected on that one.

KTC sold for less after going out on loan following season.

Miller 10 goals in 43 games for 900k and 25k a week. Open for discussion that.
