We call on EFL to stamp down on clubs cancelling games due to Covid-19

26th December 2021

AFC WIMBLEDON FC

Today we should have been playing Charlton in an exciting London derby everyone was looking forward to.

Eight days earlier we should have welcomed Portsmouth to The Cherry Red Records Stadium for another cracking League One encounter.

Instead both games were cancelled by the EFL because both visiting clubs were struck by Covid and couldn’t field enough first-team players.

The pandemic certainly takes no prisoners but ever since it struck we have taken exhaustive measures to protect our players and ensure we were always able to field a starting X1.

We have managed to do that on a fraction of the resources enjoyed by many of the teams in our division - and yet now we are left with cancelled games and fixture chaos. Which puts greater strain on our already depleted squad.

As a result of this we have sent a strongly-worded letter to the EFL spelling out how we feel - and calling on them, as our governing body, to take a much stronger stance going forward.

Annis they are dead right, teams are not doing enough to insure players follow the rules, plus not pushing them to be jabbed. I think you will find that city will not sign any players that have not been vaccinated. 9 players with covid absolutely ridiculous. :banghead:

But the club cannot control the players private lives outside the footballing side, they could have picked it up shopping, in a park, anywhere, and there is 0 evidence that it's been unvaccinated players/staff that have caused an outbreak?
I've been reading evidence of this omicron, and they are saying there is a one in two chance that if you have cold symtoms, it could be omicron! And that a higher percentage (nearly twice) of icu beds with covid, are people who have been vaccinated ! And a fair percentage of them were in hospital for something other than covid, but we're found to be positive during routine testing of patients.there are 4m+sufferers of auto immune disease in uk alone, do the ones who cannot be jabbed be discriminated against, when applying for work also? A very slippery slope imho.
