' Cardiff's Sala appeal '

It looks likely that Cardiff's appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) will move forward next year, with the hearing expected to take place in March 2022.

The plane carrying 28-year-old Sala crashed into the English Channel on the evening of January 21 2019, killing the striker and pilot David Ibbotson, 59.

The court of appeal will hear if Cardiff City should pay Nantes the £15million transfer fee they agreed before Sala died.

Despite FIFA in September 2019 ordering Cardiff to pay the fee for Sala, the Welsh club maintained the stance that the player was not registered with the club owing to the Premier League rejecting it over the signing-on fee.

Cardiff immediately appealed FIFA's decision to CAS and, due to Covid-19 and other reasons, the case is yet to be heard. However, CAS will convene in March 2022.

Emiliano Sala was registered as. Cardiff City player with the Welsh FA, but not the Premier League as those forms were filled in wrongly by Cardiff and so returned.

Crucially, Cardiff City have set aside the £19.5m for the purchase of Sala, which came to light when their annual accounts were published in March 2020. :thumbright:

Chairman Dalman also spoke publicly that the club have all the money put aside should they lose the appeal :thumbright:
