Barnsley v Cardiff Sept 1981

I went to this game, about a 100 of us in total. Those were the days we could only afford battered cars to get us there. My mate bought a van for about £50 and 5 of us piled in it for the trip. We got there ok but the damn thing broke down near where I live today. We finally got home Sunday afternoon soaked but happy.

A lot of screen shots of Mick McCarthy who played for Barnsley then before he played for the Republic of Ireland.

Cheers mate. Loved watching that. McCarthy ‘one of the longest throws in the league’. :laughing5:

Back then Ian, Billy Ronson was my fav player.
:bluebird:

Four of the Bluebirds team are sadly no longer with us - Ron Healey, Keith Pontin, Phil Dwyer and Billy Ronson.

Ian that was one of the 17 seasons I never missed a home or away game, just loved those players, including the Bennett brothers :thumbright:

Billy Ronson was an amazing player Annis.
I remember that he used to be everywhere on the pitch. Skilful, good tackler and a real box to box midfielder. I used to love the old John Lewis ‘double shuffle’ on the left and Bennett was a class act.
Like you I loved that team and the kit lol. :bluescarf: :bluescarf: :bluebird:

Derek Dougan - a face and distinctive voice from football’s past.

In those days I went to every game and missed only a couple over a 10 year period so I would definitely have been at that game. Enjoyable to watch and reminisce. Sadly 4 of those players (Healey Ponting Dwyer and Ronson) are no longer with us and one is serving time (Paul Sugrue) is serving time with Mark Aizelwood

Andrew,

That’s why Billy Ronson was my fav, small, but energetic and everywhere.

The Bennett brothers were class.

If my memory serves me right, our away form was never up to much in those days, but that win at Barnsley either followed or was followed by another away victory.

Something in my mind tells me it was a 3-2 win, and somewhere even further im the back of my mind says it was Luton.

Anyone able to confirm.. or deny?

I think you’re right mate. Possibly our only 2 away wins of the season I reckon.

Impressive memory. Google reckons it was 3-2 away at Luton and then 1-0 away to Barnsley a few days later.
