Decision on sporting events to be made on Monday
Monday 18th December 2021
Mark Drakeford has revealed a decision on how sporting events in Wales will continue amid a rise in coronavirus cases will be made on Monday.
Cardiff City and Swansea City have both seen their weekend Championship fixtures against Derby County and Queens Park Rangers respectively called off due to Covid-19 outbreaks.
On Friday, it was announced that the Ospreys had forfeited their Champions Cup match with Racing 92 after a spread of the virus within their camp.
A European Professional Club Rugby statement read: "EPCR has been informed by Ospreys that they have a recorded a number of positive tests for Covid-19 among their playing squad and as a consequence, the club is not in a position to safely fulfil its fixture."
Further postponements in the sport are expected this month, while rugby's European competition were on the verge of chaos after the French government restricted travel between the UK and France.
Premier League shareholders are set to convene on Monday in a bid to discuss the possibility of temporarily halting the top-flight schedule.
Prior to the final weekend of sporting events before Christmas, Welsh Government chiefs held discussions over how best to safeguard those participating and attending fixtures throughout the country over the coming weeks and months.
And First Minister Drakeford has revealed they are seeking further information on how the Omicron variant operates in outdoor areas before making a decision - which could potentially include a reduction on crowd limits - on Monday.
"Big events, sporting events, the festive period, a big time for the sporting calendar. There are no plans for that to change at the moment and we'll be making some announcements about that on Monday," he told BBC Breakfast.

Understand the no refreshments but 5,000? Come on. How the heck are they going to sort that?

if drakeford had his way then we would have much tougher restrictions than England..hes already said if it was up to him then there would be no international travel ie holidays abroad but he cant do that because uk government allows international travel and is impractical for Wales to ban international travel as most Welsh people fly out from England.

I think Drakeford cant wait to shut things down again - BUT he has no way of being able to pay furlough money , He has to wait for Westminster to agree that. Which they wont. So he will go back to masks in pubs, table service only, no more than 4 to a table etc.
Unless of your name is Mark Drakeford then you can go to a Diwali party, dance and sing in packed room where you would normally have to wear a mask. Drakey, Johnson , Sturgeon are awful choices as Leaders - until you look at the opposition - and you realise none of them are up to much,

CWA is dying on its arse, every time I drive past it it’s empty, occasionally 1 Tui plane but with them cancelling all flights till next Feb it means absolutely nothing will be using Cardiff Airport. Papa Smurf should bin the stupid student politics and extreme left dogma and apply a wee bit of pragmatism to the situation.

I've no doubt that our fearless First Minister will provide clear and detailed evidence from our highly qualified scientific advisers that this deadly variant (less than 200 cases when cases were meant to double every day, hospital admissions dropping and no Omicron deaths in Wales) spreads like wildfire in outdoor settings.
I'm sure he'll be asked all the tough questions by BBC Wales and Wales Online as usual

and he'll be able to show unequivocally the basis on which he will justify further restrictions on our freedoms.
Or not.

if you look at the death rate for this new varient then its actually less than for the flu...every year there are 20k plus flu deaths sometimes more in a bad year but we live with the flu with annual vaccines for the vulnerable..similarly we are going to have to live with covid in the same way...

A very well balanced post mate! Now we have this mild version, why not let it be, and we can all build some natural immunity to it?
