Newcastle and Man City may take legal action after losing Premier League rule vote

Board members and Premier League shareholders have voted to put sufficient checks in place for any sponsorship deals as a direct response to Newcastle's takeover

Saturday 18th December 2021

Newcastle United and Manchester City are weighing up the idea of taking legal action after new Premier League rules were passed to restrict related-party sponsorship.

The two sides were the only clubs to vote against a new requirement for all new commercial deals to be submitted to the Premier League Board for their approval, a rule that will be in place as a response to Newcastle's Saudi-funded takeover back in October.

Co-owner Amanda Staveley had warned rival clubs by letter that plans to stop big sponsorship deals with companies related to club owners was anti-competitive.

One way for Newcastle, 80 per-cent owned by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, to get rich quick, is for the Gulf state to pump cash into the club via big sponsorship deals with other companies they control.

The richest Saudi company is Saudi Aramco who own the second largest crude oil reserves.

But the prospect of hundreds of millions being diverted to Newcastle though those deals has receded, and will limit their ability to spend big and grow quickly.

Newcastle could challenge in court any deals which the Premier League process rules as too lucrative.

Deals such as stadium naming rights or shirt sponsorships involving Eddie Howe's side will have to see the club pocket a similar amount to clubs of a similar stature, something the Newcastle hierarchy argue leaves no room to grow and is actually anti-competitive.

Clubs cannot make losses exceeding £105million over a rolling three-year period.

Top flight will also have to declare any payments to players, managers and their officials from companies associated with the ownership to assess if they are for legitimate work rather than a means of offloading some of their main salary.

Roberto Mancini faced claims from Football Leaks that he had two contracts as coach of Man City - one with City and another with a club in Abu Dhabi.

Saudi’s Public Investment Fund bought an 80% stake in Newcastle ending Mike Ashley’s 14 years of ownership.

While Newcastle and Man City are bound by their stance on the new rules, their form on the pitch is in drastic contrast to one another.

City are still on a high after Tuesday night's 7-0 demolition of Leeds United at the Etihad to put them four points clear at the top of the table.

Newcastle, meanwhile, are second bottom and fighting relegation with just one win this season, and face Liverpool, Man City and Manchester United next.

The Magpies last league outing came away at LeicesterCity, where they were on the end of a 4-0 drubbing at the King Power Stadium.

Roger,

I can’t stand both clubs, both arrogant and both sets of fans think they have more rights to win things etc

They have NO respect for others.

It's happening a lot, real fans of Man City actually having a soft spot for the pre-oil days. Let's face it, the best day of the club's history has happenned. You can't actually surpass wiining the league in the 90+minute with Aguero, snatching the title from your fiercest rival. What tops that? I'd suggest nothing.

You are left with a soulless club, players that hate you and wouldn't give you the time of day.. that's all they got left.. win the league again whoopie freakin do. Go to a game knowing the outcome? Give Nuclear blue's sleeping pills :laughing6:

Well known City celebs such as Ricky Hatton, had a vip box for fam, even he got priced out with the 'progress' the club has made. On record missing the old City

Noel still likes City, he's very progressive, but makes he fans endure his 90's indie songs, there is no escape from wonderwall nor the realisation it's a boring club to support, boring club it's become

Extract from the bluemoon forum.

I've got a number of mates who don't go to City anymore who say the same. Most don't go because of the ticket prices but to a few, ticket prices are one reason why it's not as good as it used to be.

One lad came to the FL Cup final on the coach with us last season, without a ticket, he just wanted the craic with all the lads on the coach and in the pubs like the old days. He didn't go to the game. But we don't get to do that all that often anymore because of how expensive away games are and people have just dropped off each year. We used to go home and away everywhere. Now we're lucky if we four of us go together three times a season. There is a few away games now where i just drive down on my own.

Of course they still want City to do as well as they can but they just don't enjoy it all like they used to.

In many ways i'm the same. I'm sick of the f*cking price hikes year-on-year and i'm sick of all the family orientated/family theme park feel to the Etihad. Football culture is really lacking at City and the club are focusing on the wrong things when it comes to all the "matchday experience". Yesterday showed what an enjoyable football match should be like, but i honestly feel like City week-to-week don't want all that sort of stuff. They want Tarquin and his kids to have a nice day out and spend a load of money, get on their iPads (whether that be during the game or not) and get all the match info and all that guff.

I don't think anyone wants us to be shite again though. They've just not liked the way we're just heading to be another United or Arsenal. CL games have been f*cking abysmal at the Etihad so far with tourists, away fans and UEFA corporates all over the ground. That's not what City have ever been about and it doesn't sit right with me that we've become like that and i am worried that Prem games are going in the same direction.

But even if City lose my custom because they've finally priced me out or i've just had enough of the family theme park and toursits, i'll never want us to be shite again

If I was to win billions tomorrow. I would not be allowed to plough it all in to the club I love.

Ffp and all the silly rules exist to make the richer richer and ignore the rest. For that reason. Fair play to the rest of us. Couldn't give two shits who owns them. All as bad as one another.
