‘ Three players Steve Morison might have to bring in ‘

Thu Dec 16, 2021 10:16 am

In January Steve Morison might have to call up from the U23’s three more players due to NO money / budget available to him.

But Morison has said it’s a massive step up to the first team from the U23’s, so he would have to be really desperate.

The owner Tan wants eventually virtually the whole first team squad to have come from the under 23’s.

Also Morison has already got up to 10 U23’s in his first team squad, and is currently only starting one of them every game.

Here are just three names that, if needed, could well be on the radar.

‘ James Connolly ‘

Was included in the first-team picture during pre-season following a summer move from Blackburn Rovers, and has since become a key man for the under-23s.

A centre-back by trade, he's fully justified his role as captain of the young Bluebirds, leading by example with several highly-
accomplished performances.

He's been a goal threat too, netting twice in the recent 3-1 win over QPR U23’s, and a stunner from the edge of the area in the 4-0 triumph over Watford.

Current under-23s coach Matthew Bloxham said recently: "He's wanted to work on the attacking aspect of his game and today he scored two, so that development is great to see in the individual performances within the side."

‘ Ryan Kavanagh ‘

The midfielder has been with the club since the age of seven, and has already been tipped for a bright future.

Having recently signed his first professional deal, which keeps him in south Wales for the next two years, the 19-year-old has established himself as a regular for Cardiff's second string recently.

At first glance, his stature might be a concern, but he showed plenty of willingness to get stuck in during the recent win over Watford, producing some genuinely top-quality tackles in the middle of the park.

He was also on hand to net with a tidy drilled finished in front of Morison after just two minutes.

He's a player who many within the club seem to rate, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see his name mentioned soon.

‘ Taylor Jones ‘

Another youngster to have been involved in the first team set-up over the summer, the young centre-back is well known to Morison, having been a regular under the City boss when they worked together in the academy set-up.

Jones, who's captained his country at age-grade level, has been with the academy since the age of seven, and has already caught the attention of those within the club.

The teenager, who has also been deployed at right-back and in the middle of midfield, was even singled out for praise by Mick McCarthy earlier this year.

"Taylor is great as well, he is a real competitor for the under 23’s," McCarthy said.
