A TONYPANDY family is appealing for witnesses after a pet dog was killed by an off-road biker who was riding in forestry.

Chip, a two-year-old border collie, suffered massive internal bleeding when he was hit by one of two off-road bikers who were riding on Clydach Vale Mountain on Sunday afternoon.

Paul Reid, of Parc Gellifaelog, said the tragic incident caused his stepsons, James and Michael Hollyman, who were walking Chip at the time, great distress.

He said: “The driver said, ‘The dog should have been on a lead’, and just drove off and left them.

“This really upset James, who is only 13 and already felt bad enough anyway. We are really upset about what has happened because we saw Chip as part of the family.”

Mr Reid, 32, wants to raise awareness of illegal off-road biking, as he feels it is a problem in the area and is concerned that more incidents of this kind could happen.

He added: “This social problem is currently not being tackled as the police do not have the resources to do anything about it unless they get enough of a response.

“But you should be able to walk your dog or take your kids out in safety without worrying about a bike coming around at 20 to 30 miles an hour. It could have been a child that was hit.”

A South Wales Police spokesperson said: “Off-road bikers can expect to face the strong arm of the law if caught riding illegally on private land or committing associated offences such as criminal damage and careless driving.

“Seizing bikes under Section 152 of the Road Traffic Act is just the beginning.

“In partnership with Forestry Commission Wales, we continue to hold targeted operations to educate and apprehend those who break the law through illegal off-road riding.

“We would ask residents to please continue reporting any incidents of this nature to us so that we may better protect our communities and rural areas from harm and catch the perpetrators.

“Our sympathies go out to Mr Reid and his family for what must have been a very distressing experience.”

Anyone with information about the incident, which happened at 3.30pm on Sunday, is asked to contact the police on 101.

It was illegal to be riding that bike there and it was illegal to ride of after. Wankers like that deserve to have a right fecking beating. i only seen him once a week and i was devastated my friend (whose dog it was) said he broke his back an neck had huge internal bleeding and then my friend and his bro rapped him up in thier clothes and then the poor dog suffered for 30 minutes before he unfortunately died my friend was in bits and still his bless him and R.I.P to chip and i hope that wanker is absouletly ashamed of him self, wanker!

he was literrally part of thier family they did everything with him they loved him soooo much but you dont know how much u miss someone until theyre gone
